The Fate of America
According to the text, “The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy you vote first and take orders later; in a dictatorship you don 't have to waste your time voting”, (Bukowski 1). The decisions made in this election will affect the future of America. According to Oxford Dictionaries the president is “an elected head of state in a democratic setting”, (Oxford dictionaries 2). A good president is someone who is: experienced in political matters, intelligent, a good leader, has quality communication skills, a good decision maker, and confident in their ideals. This election will go down in the history books no matter what the result is and will be looked back on and analyzed by future generations. The opportunity is there to elect the first female president of the Unites States, Hilary Clinton. Women have gone from fighting for the right to vote, now one is on the ballot with the opportunity to be the commander and chief. We are on the brink of the third election where a Caucasian male will not be the president. Or, the other side of this coin is the Republican Nominee Donald Trump. Donald Trump is a businessman, television producer, and politician. He was born in New York City on June 14th, 1946. He attended New York Military Academy from the age of thirteen, but he never formally served in the military. He received control of his father’s real estate and construction firm in 1971. He took his father’s business and turned
America may be a young nation compared to those around those around the world and we as a nation have achieved a lot in our years. One battle that we have been fighting since the birth of our nation however is one against our own people. For years we have been divided by the colors of our skin and our heritage. Although Caucasian people may be the majority of our population, individually there are just as diverse of people in their origins as the minorities of this country. It just isn’t as apparent as having a culture branded into a skin tone. America is known as a melting pot of races from all over the globe. A lot of people seem to have forgotten where they came from after generations of searching for the “American Dream,” thus creating a typical “white American”. One instance where the white Americans banded together and discriminated against one race occurred after the bombing at Pearl Harbor. The racism that occurred against Japanese Americans is not as talked about as slavery, but the fact that it is talked about so little just goes to show that Americans are willing to sweep horrendous acts against our own people under the rug.
The physical side is at one time they did love each other because kids were born. The shared activities are the fact they have children and they still do things as a family.
The “American dream,” a promise of the ability to turn your life from rags to riches if you try hard in the United States of America, has been the definition of what it means to be an American. But over time it the American dream has changed and its pledge perhaps more viable than ever. This is due to the simple fact that America as a nation has evolved over time and the core values which its people encompass are a reflection of the times. So as an American how do we define ourselves and our nation outside of the American dream? America has been known over time as a “big brother”- protector of mankind. Yet many of our citizens did not have equal rights until the 1960’s and it took the fourteenth amendment to guarantee equal protection
In recent years, the economy in the United States has been in what most would see as a recession. American people differ in the way they react to a recession. Some, such as Michael Moore, feel it becomes a downward spiral as big business and it’s stockholders gain more money and power, and it’s workers gain less money and stability.
In order to fix the dysfunctional structure of America, we must Better educate our voters and make them more involved in current affairs to create the most efficient electorate that will choose the best political leader based on the country's situation. Despite having the most powerful job in America, the president truly doesn't have much power. The electorate controls which politicians will represent the government; voters have the most influence in the affairs of America. If the electorate is better educated and scientifically literate, then choosing the best leader that will lead the country for the beats interests of America won't be as problematic as it has been in the past.
That night, Andre stayed with a Loyalist attorney named Joshua Smith. While not permitted to wear civilian attire, he got clothes and road horseback with Smith towards Tarrytown, New York near British lines. Smith left Andre towards the end of the trip and when Andre was close to his destination three men stopped him. These men questioned Andre and instead of showing his pass that he was John Anderson, Andre trusted the men and revealed who he really was. The men, who Andre thought were Loyalists were part of the American Army, searched Andre and found the information given to him by Arnold in his shoes. He was captured and taken to the American commanding officer who informed General Washington and Arnold of the news. Arnold immediately
The job of a President should not be taken lightly. The behavior of the political opponents is a disgrace. Donald Trumps goes against everything American. Everybody has there own opinion on who they believe should be President, so mine is it should be based off there success and what they want to improve, change and everyone benefits from the decision. It's not a game everyone's lives are at state.
Since June of 1950 the United States of America has been forced to undergo multiple changes throughout the nation. Our leaders made every effort to keep our nation out of another world conflict but with the growing communist aggression in Korea this has become all but impossible. While back here at home the suburban communities of nation are growing with leaps and bonds. We are seeing more and more women on college campus and the growing issues of civil rights is vastly becoming a more volatile everyday.
America today is no longer a place in which we embrace the uniqueness of every individual, instead, today’s society heavily influences its citizens through the thoughts of other people, media, and by instilling fear of being different; they do so by giving the people the ability to “choose” who they want to be, in other words false choice. Throughout history there have been times in which all individuals in a certain area such as America, have made a drastic change to the way that they live in; the first one being The Great Awakening, followed by the Red Scare, which later is proceeded by World War 2(WW2). With the ability to spread one’s ideas to a large crowd over papers, online, and radio made it easier for their beliefs to spread and influence them. The only thing that prevents us from sticking to our beliefs, from what we desire to do, is the fear to be different.
Since America was founded we have had a problem with immigration. There has been a plethora of ideas and groups to try keeping out illegal aliens. The problem is we do not need to keep all of them out we need to keep the ones who will contribute to make America great. The way to do this is through Building America. Building America is a fencing organization designed for immigrants who wish to become legal citizens.
In the movie Starship Troopers, there are two classes of people, Civilians and Citizens. What are the differences? Citizens are the men and women, rich or poor that serve in the Federal Service; service guarantees citizenship. This is a short period in which a person serves in the military. A universal service that requires young (Americans) citizen, men and females: healthy and the disable, to obligatory serve an allotment of time. Basically, you have to earn the right to be called a citizen; this sounds like a good idea. Civilians do not have same rights as a Citizen; they choose not to serve in the Federal Service. If a person does not serve, he or she are not allowed the same benefits like, to vote or have children; if you don’t serve
According to the textbook, Becoming America, industrialization is the “reorganization of an economy and a society as it turns toward large-scale manufacturing, typically involving the specialization, subdivision, and mechanization of traditional production processes” (Henkin, Becoming America, 253). Preceding the Civil War, both the railroads and factories skyrocketed transforming aspects of life such as work, time, nature, and social life. As a result of these changes new classes of the community were formed also creating a new culture (Henkin, 473). The addition of new communication networks and transportation aided in making the move into the growing economy possible. With the new railroads the United States was able to transport goods and materials faster and at a cheaper cost (Henkin, 475). Although the industrialization of the United States improved the income and job opportunities, it also conveyed that the society itself was not ready for such changes. The people and their way of life were deemed unstable causing great destruction and
The government in the United States supposedly revolves around American ideals such as equality and diversity; however, this is simply not the case as perpetuated by class inequalities. The meaning of democracy has been skewed in the United States to represent something entirely different than it did in 1776. Today, American democracy behaves more like an aristocracy, where the upper class exercises power within the government and state, influencing discourse and therefore the laws and resources in our country, which are purportedly “for the people”. Democracy is presumed to provide everyone with equal political power, but the government in today’s America, although seemingly following this ideal model, does not. Instead, the elite upper class has a monopoly over the political influence and are the sole benefactors from public policies due to their influence over the policy making process. The upper class has an overall benefit from class inequality, as it greatly impacts American ‘democracy’ through the significant power gained through money and status, leadership roles that impact government, and the influence in the policymaking process that creates upper class advantages.
“America was conducting business as usual, but others were joining the game.” (Zakaria, 221). All this time we thought we were on top, we were actually slowly becoming less and less of leader and more a bystander as the rest of the world is slowly rising around us. Zakaria shows in that quote that as America has been continuing business like always, and because of this we have failed to realize our standing with the world around us. In the book The Post-American World, Zakaria shows us the challenges that America faces today. I believe the United States is most affected by our ignorance, competition, and worldly participation.
United States, 2006: a nation with a history of a mere 230 years, yet it stands as one of the most powerful nations in the world. Yet many of us know little about the history and cultural changes that led to the birth of this nation. We only know the bits and pieces that are taught as we sit daydreaming in our fifth grade classroom. The Puritans, the Pilgrims, Christopher Columbus, the Mayflower, we know about these people and things, yet what aspects of their lives created the change in America? The answer to this question can be found by observing the changes in religion, women's role, and colonial law as it brought about the change in the Puritan's cultural values.
