SUMMARY #1 (pg. 1-45) Although my novel, The Fellowship of the Ring, has just begun, a lot of events have already taken place. The story begins years after the events of the prequel The Hobbit, fifty years since Bilbo Baggins had returned from an adventure with the great wizard Gandalf and Gandalf’s dwarf companions. In Bilbo’s home of the Shire, he announces that he will be inviting many guests to his 111th birthday. (Hobbits live much longer than humans). However, after being visited by Gandalf, Bilbo reveals to him, along with Frodo Baggins, (Bilbo’s adopted heir), that he has grown tired of life in the Shire. So, on his 111th birthday, Bilbo decides to, with help, “disappear” to a life in the mountains. He leaves a will, and divides …show more content…
He departs towards Buckland, but he and his companions are not alone. They encounter a mysterious Black Rider, servant to Sauron, who appears to head the same way they are. They also encounter a group of elves, who take a liking to Frodo (because of Frodo’s ability to speak the Ancient Speech) and shelter them and give Frodo advice. The trio continues their journey, but not without other troubles lying ahead.
SUMMARY #3 (pg. 91-135)
The group of hobbits continue their journey, approaching Buckland, when they run into a familiar face. On the outer edge of the village is the farm of Farmer Maggot, a friend of Pippen and of Frodo. Maggot invites them inside and shares with them his experience with the Black Rider, and how Frodo is being tracked. He shelters them and helps them to the Ferry, which they cross before a dark figure arrives. They stay in the home of Merry and Fatty (two other hobbits) and decide to depart through the forest. However, they soon encounter danger, as Merry become trapped in a willow tree, and escaped only with the help of a friendly stranger they encountered in the forest, Tom Bombadil. Bombadil also takes the group to his house and gives them a place to stay other than the unforgiving wilderness.
SUMMARY #4 (pg. 136-180)
While heading through the forest, the hobbits become nervous, as if something is chasing them. Then, the air grows cold and
The main protagonist of this story is Bilbo Baggins, who is known for being very sneaky and quiet, he is amongst a very small elite group of Hobbit’s who have a knack for adventure, with some convincing he agreed to join Thorin and his group of dwarves because 13 is an unlucky number, but little did they know that he would play such an important role in their quest.
Aragorn, also known as Strider, is a friend of Gandalf and as such, knows that Frodo carries the ring. Aragorn is instrumental in helping the hobbits reach Rivendell. Without him, the hobbits would have gotten murdered in their sleep at Bree. Aragorn insists that they not sleep in the hobbit rooms, but instead sleep in a dining room. When they go to their room the next morning, they find it trashed and the beds where the hobbits were to have slept ripped to shreds. Aragorn also guides them through the wilderness, helping them navigate towards Rivendell. When the Black Riders catch up with them and give Frodo a dangerous cut, Aragorn is able to find a plant to soothe the pain and help Frodo continue on to Rivendell. The hobbits would have met a rather untimely ends without Aragorn to guide and advise them on their
Bilbo lives a quiet and comfortable life in his hobbit hole in Bag end and he almost never leaves home. But the wizard knows that there is more to Bilbo that meets the eye and he has certain powers that can help the dwarves in their journey to
First, Bilbo is selfless. He shows this to be true during many troubles on this journey. As he travels with twelve dwarves and a wizard, who has now left them, through many lands, their journey brings them to Mirkwood, a very large, dark wood with many dangerous and horrifying creatures. In this forest, the company encounters giant spiders and the dwarves are captured and wrapped in spider silk, while Bilbo hides by using a magical ring that he had found earlier in their travels. He then uses his sword to fight the beasts and save his friends. After this, they notice that Thorin, the king of the dwarves, was missing. They searched for him and the path which they had lost before their quarrel with the spiders. Then, Wood elves with bows and swords surrounded them and captured all but Bilbo, for he had once again used his ring to ‘disappear’. The elves took the dwarves to their palace and locked them away in the king’s dungeon, where Thorin was also.
It all started off an ordinary day for a lonely hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins, when he met a wizard named Gandalf and accidently invited him over for tea the next day. By the time the next day had arrived Bilbo had forgotten all about Gandalf coming over. Bilbo’s doorbell rung and he assumed it was Gandalf but it wasn’t it was a dwarf by the name of Dwalin and soon after he arrived more dwarfs started arriving and finally so did Gandalf. In all Bilbo had 13 dwarfs and a wizard to feed. They sat
This is Bilbo’s acceptance of the adventure. Next Bilbo got help from a supernatural aid; a ring. He came across the ring underground in the Goblins territory right before he encountered Gollum. The ring turned out to be Gollum’s and was very important to him, but still Bilbo took it for himself; and that was a smart idea, as it became quite a useful tool throughout his journey. With it he escaped Gollum’s lair; “Gollum was defeated. He dared go no further. He had lost : lost his prey, and lost, too, the only thing he had ever cared about, his precious” (Tolkien 87). The ring helped Bilbo escape the goblins, who Bilbo encountered shortly after fleeing from Gollum. The ring also helped Bilbo escape from the treacherous spiders he and the dwarves came across later on in the story. Finally, Bilbo crossed the threshold, or in other worlds, left the old world behind. The morning after the dwarves had convinced Bilbo to join them, Bilbo found his house trashed, but the dwarves gone. So he assumed they went on without him. Ten minutes before he was due at the Green Dragon Inn, Gandalf appeared at his house informing him that they were all waiting for him to arrive. Flustered, Bilbo was shoved out of his house towards the Inn, without
When Gandalf visits Bilbo he invited Bilbo to join him on an adventure, which Bilbo declines since he is deathly afraid of leaving his home. The next day he is visited by dwarves who believe that he can help them on their journey to Lonely Mountain to recover their ancestral treasure. The comments made by the Dwarves made Bilbo realize that Gandalf had said that Bilbo was a burglar. Bilbo eventually agrees to go, but then changes his mind the next morning, but eventually agrees to go again. After Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves had been traveling for a while Bilbo starts to regret coming on the adventure as the landscape gets a lot more hostile. Shortly after this
Problem: Bilbo has betrayed the dwarves and is telling the Elvenking and his follower’s secret information that the party knows. (p.248)
The story starts from the side of Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo starts as a nervous & annoyed host. He is hobbit, & his folk are reserved, but kind & carefree. Hobbits love to accommodate company when the time arrives, but this night Bilbo was in a ruck. Spontaneously, 13 dwarves & Gandalf tediously trickled through the door in groups & demanded dinner. Bilbo was not expecting these unknown & unplanned visitors, especially the grand total of 14! They ate & sang all night, while little time was devoted to business, which was planned that night. Bilbo was exhausted, unpleased, & unaffiliated with the pressing event they gathered to discuss. He was only aware that Gandalf selected him to be the Burglar of the party, which just so happened to be a vast journey across Middle-Earth. Unbeknownst to anyone, this was the start of a haunting tale, which Bilbo would never overlook. The first prominent issue Bilbo had to resolve the trolls. The group utilized this to test Bilbo’s strength, courage, brains, & stealth. Throughout the story, Bilbo continues to earn his spot among the dwarves, while the party is continually slammed with additional problems, however, everyday & every challenge reveals more of the nature of the dwarves & of Bilbo. With his role concluded & the Battle of Five Armies won, the yearning for home was too much to bear. Bilbo decided to travel home & achieve his part in the adventure of a lifetime. Each dwarf had grown quite fond of Bilbo, for the journey wouldn’t have been a success without their Burglar. The travel home was bittersweet & was a wonderful memoir of his quest. Gandalf accompanied him all the way to his Hobbit Hole on the Hill in Bag-End. Can we label Bilbo a hero? If so, what kind of hero is he? Is he a hero in history or in the eyes of the dwarves? Was Bilbo a savior for the descendants to come or the
Him being at his home being comfortable and sitting outside and smoking his pipe at the beginning of the story. The here comes Gandalf with his long staff, and Bilbo greets him and say good morning to him. Gandalf says “What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?” Bilbo says all of them and invites Gandalf to sit down with him. Gandalf says that he does not have time to sit he is looking for someone to go on an adventure. Bilbo tells him he won’t find anyone around these parts. People who live in the Hill are quiet folks they aren’t into adventures. The rising action of the Hobbit is when Gandalf appears and asks Bilbo if he would like to go on an adventure. Bilbo of course at first says no and that hobbit’s do not go on adventures. Bilbo invites Gandalf tea and Gandalf accepts and before he leaves he leaves a sign on Bilbo’s front door. The next day Bilbo up and doing the things he would normally do when he hears a knock at his door. He thought it was Gandalf but it was Dwalin. Then two more dwarves Kili and Fili. Five more dwarves show up Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin. Then Gandalf arrives with four more dwarves Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Thorin. They all start discussing the adventure, the map, and who was going to do what. Bilbo is excited about the adventure but
He is accompanied by his band of merry men, and at the sound of a bugle, they will be by his side. In the beginning of chapter five, we see that Robin adventures in the woods to get his mind off the Sheriff. While he is walking, he stumbles upon a butcher with his cart and horse.
Bilbo won the riddle off, but Gollum does not keep his promise and searches for his lost magic ring. Luckily, Bilbo found Gollum’s ring and turns invisible with it. Bilbo finds a passage and escapes Gollum and the goblins. Bilbo was smart and clever in this situation. The hobbit finds Gandalf and the dwarfs. Meanwhile, ferocious wolves called Wargs obtain and pursue them. They are rescued by eagles and the shape-shifted man-bear named

The Hill: More commonly referred to as “Bag End”, The Hill was a smial where the Baggins family and later the Gardner family resided. A smial is described as the Hobbit’s style of dwelling, holes in the hillside, during the late Third Age while most other Hobbit-holes had been replaced by buildings made of wood or brick. In the beginning of the novel, the reader is entered into Bag End with descriptions surrounding them such as “a perfectly round door like a porthole...with a shiny yellow brass knob” (Tolkien, 3) and “panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted” (Tolkien, 3).
Coming back home from an adventure, no matter how grand or humble, is always difficult. Never seeing your team and moving on with your life and goals. Bilbo, he had captured so many unforgettable memories with his team. Bilbo had spent more than a year with the dwarves and
