The Financial Cost of Technology in Education
Think about how much it costs you or your family to keep up with the latest computer technology. Also think about about how much you pay at home for a high speed internet connection. Not to mention, the security, adware, and virus protection software you must purchase to ensure your computer keeps working properly. Consider how much it costs to outfit a single classroom with this technology, or even an entire school.

According to multiple consultants, most of the $25 million was wasted. It is now being suggested that they use systems being developed by the city, but the schools would need to spend an additional $22.7 million for the city’s computer systems (Blum 2004).
A report done by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution states that Atlanta Public Schools “misspent or mismanaged nearly $73 million from a national program intended to give poor children access to the Internet” (Donsky; Foskett 2004). Furthermore, Atlanta says it needs $14 million a year just to run “one of the country’s most lavish computer networks for school children” (Donsky; Foskett 2004). Millions of dollars were spent at schools that were closed or demolished within a few years, and other schools were supplied with electronics for twice as many classrooms as the school has. The national program footing the bill is called E-rate, and while they won’t pay for computers, they pay for Internet infrastructure. Funding for E-rate is acquired by Americans everywhere through a surcharge in their telephone bills. Using federal money quite carelessly, Atlanta Public Schools spared little expense. They repeatedly ordered equipment and upgrades that they did not need, showed no regard for price when choosing vendors, and in some cases unknowingly received less that what they paid for. One of the drawbacks mentioned in the article “Technology: A Catalyst for Teaching and Learning in the Classroom,” is that technology is very expensive, requires ongoing support and constant upgrades, and is not as cost effective as other investments in education (Valdez 21). Some critics think technology is a waste of scarce resources in education (Valdez 22), because overspending in technology can leave inadequate funds for other pressing needs in education. The funds invested in new technologies can instead be invested in other ways such as arts, science laboratories and shops that allow for more hands-on learning (Valdez 21). Well balanced funding for all essential elements in education is an important strategy to follow in the reality of scarce resources in education.

In today’s society technology usage is so much more widespread than it was just five years ago. The new toys can allow schools to broaden their curriculum. Since most work can be done on a single device, kids can work at their own pace and potentially reach heights they could never reach with book, pen, and paper. This report is simply not accurate, and the methodology used in the report to calculate the per student station costs is greatly flawed and resulting conclusions are not sound.
Computers are the foundation of instructional technology but despite their many uses and importance in nearly every workplace many schools have poor funding for technology. Kids who are in schools that don’t have adequate tech funding end up behind their peers, and their lack of computer skills can affect everything from their ability to research for academic projects to their ability to enter STEM related jobs and programs.
In many ways, bringing our devices would save a lot of money not just for the school but for the students. The school wouldn't have to buy as much printer paper or paper in general. Not to mention that they would'nt have to buy the textbooks, workbooks, and etc. Not having the immense textbooks would save a ton of money and all of the curriculum would be online. Although the school has i Pads for the students we don't tend to use them because we always use our books. However, if we brought our own devices, the school would be in a better financial stand point. This way of doing school with technology is the most economical way for everyone.
Today’s education differs much from the education fifty years ago. One of the reasons they are so different is because of technology. In the past fifty years the world of technology has grown tremendously, affecting everything, including education. A few things that have been brought into the world of education are computers, video and digital equipment such as DVDs, digital cameras and recording devices.
