In the show Supergirl is about a girl named Kara who is actually an alien, but was sent to earth after her planet, Krypton got destroyed. In the first episode it shows a bit of her as a young girl and then flashforward to the present when she is an adult and how she revealed to the world about her powers. I found about five motifs in the first episode, but some of the most important ones I saw was supernatural, baptism, and symbol. Kara or supergirl is a supernatural motif. She is an alien, another species which intreges the audience into believe the unknow. The word alien is also used in society without a supernatural connatation. Alien is a foreigner or an outsider. This talks about society. And how there are different people in the world
An archetype is a recurrent symbol or motif in literature. There are situational archetypes and character archetypes. I am going to be talking about the situational archetype Quest and the character archetype the Initiate. The Initiate is the underdog of the story, the hero that has to go through a little training. The Quest is a search for someone or something. Author Ingrid Law uses these two archetypes in the novel Savvy.
In the 60s, Soviet films begin to interpret WWII as a tragedy and a triumph (23). Larisa Shepitko’s Wings (1966) is about a female war veteran’s identity crisis in the post-war society. It depicts the ambivalent treatment of women in the patriarchal society, in which women who experience greater freedom in wartime and are expected to assume a more restrained domestic role. The film shows this internal conflict of the protagonist, Nadezhda Petrukhina, through a narration of her struggles in the post-war life and her nostalgia for the war.
Everyone has their own unique and true personalities. They can choose to express it in a way that they are comfortable with or keep it inside. Everyone is different and separate in their own unique way. Not very many people try to fit in and be like everyone else, but there are a few people that do. In the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, the author uses symbolism, cause and effect, and characterization to prove that standing out is better than fitting in.
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” Dalai Lama. This quote is expressed many times in the book, Between Shades of Gray, by Ruta Sepetys. Lina, the protagonist, is separated from her father. She, her mother, and younger brother, Jonas, go through traumatizing times most people would crumble under. Yet, she still manages to survive because she doesn’t want to lose her family, traditions, relationships and her dignity. This book shows, people who value their dignity will survive longer than those who don’t.
While reading “Normal” by Ms. Nielsen, I kept finding myself thinking about Stargirl. Stargirl and the author were so similar, yet so different. They were similar in a sense that they didn’t fit in with others. However, how
When analyzing the theme in the film Mean Girls, plot can be used to support the theme, making fun of others won’t make you feel better about yourself.
One example of a symbol used in My Antonia would be in book X, when the following statement was made about Mr. and Mrs. Burden, “They seem awful scared of the cold, and stick in that hole in the bank like badgers.” What this statement implies is that the Burden’s do not live out their lives to the fullest and instead, allow obstacles, which are easily avoidable, to stop them from enjoying themselves to their full potential. Hence, why they stay in their hole (which is their home) like a badger would. Another example of symbolism would be the dried mushrooms. To the Burdens, the dried mushrooms have no value they are simply old and are not useful, so Mrs. Burden decides to dispose them. While on the other hand, the Shimerdas, view these dried-up mushrooms as a source of flavor and character, so instead of throwing the mushrooms away, they add them to their meal. This goes to show that the Burdens are somewhat quick to dismiss the uncommon customs of their foreign neighbors. Another example of symbolism in My Antonia would be the plow. The plow is a silhouette, noticed by Jim and Antonia, sitting against the sun. As the sun set behind the plow, both of the elements combined and formed a perfectly synchronized picture. This symbolizes the way man and mother nature should connect and coexist. The message here is that man and mother nature should live amongst each other in peace, not in hatred or disarray, but together as one, harmoniously.
Stargirl is a unique person. She has a pet rat that she brings everywhere. She cheers for both teams. She give everyone something every holiday. She stands out from everyone else.
Short stories usually convey a theme message, a statement which motivates the reader to be a more moral person. In order for the reader to understand this life lesson, authors implant different literary devices such as foreshadowing and conflict into their text. Foreshadowing is the use of clues to suggest events that may occur later in the story, and conflict is when there is a struggle between two opposing forces. In “Charles” by Shirley Jackson and “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov, the authors use foreshadowing and conflict to enhance the story's ultimate meaning.
Pat uses “alien (11)” to emphasise how the speakers feels about being mixed. Pat mora uses “alien” to expresses how the speaker feels about being mixed culture. When she says “alien” it tells the reader that the speaker feels isolated and un-relatable to others because they aren’t like everyone else, specifically because they are from two different race so the speaker feels like they don't have a place where they belong without being identified by their race. Another word that Pat mora uses to highlight the speaker's emotion about being excluded because they are seen as different is “masking (20)”. “masking” is being used to portray that the speaker feels like they have to hide who they are and act the way by how they look so they won’t be alienated.
During My Antonia there are many symbols which are used to provide messages to the reader about not only the story but about life. One of the biggest symbols used during the course of the story is the Nebraska prairie. Cather uses the prairie to show the reader both how good and tough life can be. For example, during the summer, the prairie is full of wonderful things like prairie dogs playing and it can provide the food needed to survive as a pioneer in the west. In the story, Jim says that “July came on with that breathless, brilliant heat which makes the plains of Kansas and Nebraska the best corn country in the world. It seemed as if we could hear the corn growing in the night”. However, during the winter it is cold and harsh and make
Foreshadowing is a warning or indication of a future event. In the beginning of an episode in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy falls asleep during one of her lectures, and her dream is a tool of foreshadowing. This dream is very eerie which gives the audience insight to how the mood and tone of the episode will be. In the episode Hush, in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, foreshadowing is used to establish the tone of the rest of the episode.
