The Five Pillars of Faith are devotional practices that provide every Muslim with a practical framework to cultivate spiritual development. It put into practice a Muslims belief, as they all must fulfill these five obligations in order to live a respectable and responsible life according to Shari’ah (Islamic Law). The Five Pillars consist of the Shahadah (declaration of faith), Salat (daily prayer), Zakat (obligatory almsgiving), Sawm (Fasting) and Hajj (Pilgrimage). They aim to make Muslims conscious of God and bring peace and harmony between the physical and spiritual desires of a human being.

The creed makes devotees believe that their actions throughout their lives are continually judged by God, which ultimately affects the way Muslims act and behaviors in society, as they attempt to please God.
The Shahadah is an important aspect of everyday life of believers who made the choice to put Allah first and follow his straight path of life. This is exampled in an article by ‘The National’ where they state, “Many believe... that there should only be one God, and he alone is the sustainer and the creator”. This reflects the power of the First Pillar as many abide by this law and continue to put Allah first in their lives. This subsequently makes adherents conscious of the way they go about in their day-to-day activities and what they prioritize in life, acknowledging that all aspects of life are interrelated back to the Shahadah.

Salat, which is obligatory for every Muslim to pray five times each day who is ‘sane, mature and free from menstruation and confinements due to childbirth’, is the second pillar of faith. It provides followers a chance to detach from daily affairs and non-essential things and has a direct and personal connection with God.
