The Five Pillars Of Islam

Arkhan al Islam or the five pillars of faith are the foundations of Islam which govern the everyday actions and practices of Islamic adherents around the world. These core teachings of Islam are essential in order for Muslims to be able to efficiently express and practice their beliefs. Adherents are expected to follow these pillars as it is stated in the Qur’an, believed to be the direct word of Allah, revealed through the revelation to the prophet Muhammad. The five pillars are a crucial part of Islam, therefore being perfect examples of expressions of faith, as they shape how the Islamic faith is lived out. Both Sunni and Shi’ia Muslims agree of the fundamentals of Islam, and carry out practicing these beliefs in similar yet slightly altered ways. By living out these pillars, adherents are showing full submission to Allah and will assist adherents in gaining a place in the afterlife.

In the ancient world, idea of god was ever-changing and was different depending on the religion. For the Muslims, there was a sacred text called The Five Pillars of Islam that guided them through their religion to form a stronger relationship with god. The religious duties gave the Islamic disciples a unique quality and faith. Although the pillars belonged to the Muslims, many of the views were parallel to those of Judaism, which it emerged from. The beliefs within the Five Pillars of Islam were similar to the beliefs in Judaism in the aspects of faith, fasting, and pilgrimage.

When describing the five pillars of the Muslim faith, it is believed that this was the main foundation of the Muslim way of life. These five pillars give a true identity when it comes to the Muslim faith and lifestyle. One of the pillars is named Salat which is translated to Prayer in the English language. Throughout the day people would have to pray and it doesn't really matter where they do it. They have to at least do it five times a day. The second pillar that I will talk about is named Zakat. Zakat would mean charity or give charity. One of the principles following this is to have the knowledge that everything belongs to God.

Like many other religions, the Muslim faith has experienced many changes and branches. Like Christianity, the original faith is still practiced by some, but others have started new branches with their own unique interpretation being Muslim. Despite these differences within the Muslim religion, one set of rules for moral guidance is central to all. These rules are the Five Pillars of Islam. The Five Pillars act as a moral compass for Muslims and are universally accepted as they are mentioned specifically in the Qur’an, the sacred Muslim book of God’s words as they were recited to Muhammad (Molloy, 425).

The Five Pillars of Islam are Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and Muhammad, Establishment of the daily prayers, Concern for and almsgiving to the needy, Self-purification through fasting, and The pilgrimage to Mecca. These Five Pillars are the foundations of Muslim life. An important part of Islam is the belief in One True God, Allah. The truth that God has control over your salvation means that us humans are dependent on ourselves if we want a good life in heaven and earth. Tales from 1,001 Nights is a very well-known Arabic work of fiction. There is definitely room for debate as to whether or not it upholds Muslim beliefs. However, in the sections that I read, “The Story of Nur al-Din and Shams al-Din” and “The Story of Taj al-Muluk and Princess Dunya,” there seemed to be very few connections to Islamic values. The stories have little in common with the Five Pillars of Islam or any of the other beliefs and practices of the religion.

A Muslim must declare “There is no God but the God and Muhammad is the messenger of God.” (Esposito, p. 240). This declaration confirms the monotheistic beliefs of Muslims and is mandatory for one to become a Muslim. It also confirms the belief in the prophet Muhammad who is the last messenger of God.

The pilgrimage to Mecca, which is the fifth Pillar of Islam, is known as hajj. The Five Pillars of Islam are the foundation of the entire religion, and dictate the actions of every Muslim in both a private and public manner (Western Traditions 244). The first Pillar is shahadah: “to declare, or bear witness, that there is no god except God (Allah), and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God” (Western Traditions 244). The second Pillar is salat: “to establish regular worship” (Western Traditions 244) also known as prayer – which must occur five times a day. The third Pillar is almsgiving: which requires paying the Zakat alms (Western Traditions 244).

The first of the Five Pillars is the creed. It states that, “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger,”. This pillar is at the core for the Muslim faith. A person truly becomes a Muslim when he/she recites this creed, and truly believes it in their heart. This message is found within the Muslim faith, and is recited daily. It can also be found written within mosques and homes as well.

One of the most prominent and significant core beliefs at the heart of the Islamic Tradition is the Five Pillars of Islam; Faith, Prayer, Charity, Fasting and Pilgrimage to Mecca, five obligations that every Muslim must fulfil in order to live an enriched and full life, according to the teachings of Islam. However, while each Pillar is held in very high regard the Fifth and final Pillar, referred to as Hajj, ḥadjdj or hadj, as it is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, the Holy City of Islam in Saudi Arabia.

Muslims believe in one god, Allah, who is the most just, most wise, most knowledgeable, most merciful, etc. Muslim's holy book is the Quran, and they believe it was revealed to Prophet Mohammed by the angel Gabriel. The Quran provide guidance for Muslim's daily life and spiritual life. Most Muslims believe in the 5 pillars of Islam. The fist is to witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Mohammed is the messenger of God. The second is to do the 5 daily prayers. The third is to pay 20% of your annual income to charity. The fourth and Fifth are fasting Ramadan and doing the pilgrimage if you are able

In this essay, I will be discussing the core beliefs of Islam, such as the ‘Five Pillars’, as well as how Islam’s beliefs differ from Judaism and Christianity.

The religion of Islam dates back to the 7th century CE and the life of its founder, Muhammad of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Islam is an Arabic word meaning: making something safe and secure, making something sound and whole, entering into peace and tranquility, and surrendering to something other than oneself. A follower of Islam is called a Muslim. In the religion of Islam, it requires the belief in certain core tenets, which include the articles of faith and the five pillars of worship. These two combined, form the Islamic creed.
