Special Interest Groups Special interest groups are organizations working together towards an issue they feel needs to be addressed. They find ways to pressure legislators to favor their group, and vote their way in certain bills. There are thousands of interest groups across the country. All of them are working every day to get their name out into the community and publicize their organization. There are many types of interest groups, but are categorized by public, professional, and business groups. Public interest groups include groups such as PETA and Greenpeace, and these groups work for the betterment of the community. Economic and single issue groups get most of their money from their membership dues, but some may also have direct mail fundraising or from government grants (Philadelphia). Groups have directors or trustees to decide on how the money is used. The more money that a group has the more powerful they are. But money is not the only thing that can make an interest group powerful. The size of the group can have a great impact as well. A group that has committed members, effective leadership, and has the ability to gather information and deliver well are qualities of a powerful interest group. Although there are many categories of interest groups some of the most popular interest groups are based around agriculture.
