The Future Of Agriculture

The Art of the Commonplace is a book with gathered essays written by Wendell Berry, a novelist and also a farmer. A variety of published papers distributed thematically over five sections in this collection. It is an inclusive inside at Wendell Berry’s beliefs and an overview about the routine with agriculture and how it can help society. Before he dedicated himself to farming, Wendell Berry was a successful teacher and writer in New York, but returned to his birthplace and home in Kentucky to reconnect with himself and his land. This decision gave him inspiration to write and inspired many readers with his philosophical views of the connection between agriculture and a healthy society.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as Future Farmers of America (FFA) is an organization that is allows for all students in high school to be a part of an organization that strives to do better in the agriculture industry. Students of all races and ethnicities are a part of the FFA and that was made possible do to the changes that our country has made in an effort to end segregation and other ethnic issues.

Education is a powerful tool and, when used correctly, it has the power to teach someone a new skill, transform his or her perspective, and encourage personal growth and development. Throughout this country, numerous agricultural education programs help students to learn more about and deepen their understanding of one of this nation’s most valuable industries: the agricultural industry. Future Farmers of America (FFA) is the nation’s largest youth organization that steers students in a direction of career success and premier leadership. Like most organizations FFA is very conscious of making career success and leadership their goals for students, so why might FFA be the best option for the students? This organization highly impacts students because it is an inter-curricular activity instead of an extracurricular activity. FFA is an organization well known across the country. This organization is perceived to just be available for farm and ranch kids, but this is open to help all students. It is a long-standing tradition of honesty, strong worth ethic and fairness. From an early childhood, I was able to learn the values of hard work, discipline, humility, and determination. I learned this from my parents who would work in the hot sun slaving away in the orchards. Every night I would watch them come home from work exhausted. Their checkered shirts and ripped denim jeans drenched in pesticide chemicals. Their fingers would be chapped and their faces burnt from the long day in the sun. When I turned nine, I finally got to see the realities and the difficulty of field labor.

Alabama Agriculture: Sustaining Future Generations, is the theme of this essay. A few way to sustain future generations of Alabama agriculture is, like farmers they pass there farm and knowledge down there family. Another example is when you go get a job that is related to agriculture like going to work at a cattle farm they teach you what you need to know to do this job. Those are two examples of ways that we can sustain agriculture for future generations.

It is a known fact that the way humans produce food is not sustainable for a bright future. Here in America we discard almost half the amount of food we produce, which could be used to feed the enormous amount of starving people in the world. Not only are we being wasteful, but we are also greatly contributing to the amount of pollution and greenhouse gases because of our practices. After reading “What’s for supper?” my eyes were further opened to how damaging our agricultural system is and inspired me to take on a “greener” lifestyle.

A discourse community follows Swales’ six characteristics: members share common goals, has a form of communication, a form of feedback, genres, a specific lexis, and has a level of expertise all within the group (Swales 25). I believe the Future Farmers of America is a great candidate for this topic for that it falls in to the categories listed by Swales. The start of Future Farmers of America came in 1900s in the state of Virginia. Adolescent to teenage males were not interested in farming and did not want to take over the family farms. The Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization is one of the best ways that I believe I have taken advantage of education. Because of my involvement in the FFA I have traveled to a lot of different universities and have competed in competitions. The type of competitions I would never involved in are cooperative marketing and tree pruning. By being apart of these teams I have learned more about farming and marketing then I ever thought I would. The biggest learning experience I have had with this organization was when I attended the state conference in Fresno, which is where I learn about the entire agricultural community in California, leadership, and it is also where I had met the national president and secretary of the FFA organization.

Freshman year of high school- the year of new experiences - new friends, new teachers, new failures. On top of all the stressful decisions that come with entering high school, students are expected to join clubs which interest them. Futures Farmers of America, FFA, is one the of these clubs. By joining this club students will learn the skills necessary to become a successful leader. While learning to become leaders, students will conquer their fears and weaknesses , as well as, learning to exploit their strengths. They learn the vital skill of time management, and the value and use of teamwork. Overall the benefits which FFA offers students is impossible to deny.

The Future Farms of America or the FFA is the extracurricular activity that has affected me the most in my high school years and my life thus far. Many people may think that the FFA is only an organization of farms that go around judging cows and grow plants but we are much more than that. Through FFA, I have been able to come out of my comfort zone, take a leadership position, and learn to give back to the community. Meeting new people through all the competition the FFA does and working with members in my chapter caused me to make new friends who slowly help me out of my comfort zone. I even gave a speech in front of my whole about how FFA can cause anyone to step out of their comfort zones leaping out of the zone myself in that moment. As

The agriculture field is one of the biggest employers, employing over 155 million people in the United States. What do you think about when you hear the word “agriculture?” Many people would say farming, but this is not the most common occupation in this field. Farmers make up a fraction of the agricultural jobs at 900,000, but over 2.1 million people own, rent, and claim farming as a primary source of income. The average farm size has dropped from 460 acres in 1990 to 418 acres in 2007, while the average age of this occupation rose to 57, making this one of the older workforces in the United States.

Agriculture was the most important economic activity in America from the founding of Virginia in 1607 to about 1890. Although farming declined rapidly in relative economic importance in the twentieth century, U.S. agriculture continued to be the most efficient and productive in the world. Its success rested on abundant fertile soil, a moderate climate, the ease of private land ownership, growing markets for farm produce at home and abroad, and the application of science and technology to farm operations.

Agriculture in the United States has changed dramatically over the centuries. Since the 1960’s large commercial farms have been leading in sales. As a direct result of their success we, as a society, have access to affordable food. However, the success of large farms has lead to many negative impacts such as increased usage of resources and decreased diversity in crop fields. This begs the question, what can be done to reduce the negative impacts of large farms. One solution growing in popularity is sustainable agriculture. The idea of sustainable agriculture is to create farms that need little to no outside help from irrigation, pesticides, or fertilizers. Sustainability can be achieved in many way through
