The General Education program at University of South Carolina Upstate is a program of study that provides students majoring in a different array of programs with a common academic experience. A set of general education requirements is included in each baccalaureate program includes a core curriculum with university requirements and courses. The purpose of such requirements is to provide a broadly based intellectual foundation for students in the area of specialization development. For this reason, students are encouraged to select various courses outside their major area of study for a successful undergraduate educational experience. In the policy that follows, we propose specific recommendations and solutions in hopes of providing what may serve as guidelines for the reform of USC Upstate General Education. We have full confidence in the University, its faculty, administrators, and student, as well as its resources and capabilities. As such, we have full confidence that the insights of our proposal will be effectively considered and accounted for in the ongoing reform of General Education.
Additionally, we discuss the evolution of General Education and the purposes it serves in a 21st century college education. This is followed by a review of recent trends in General Education across the nation. Finally, we enter into a discussion about the General Education program here at Penn State and the recent stirrings which have prompted the creation of the General Education Task Force and put the structure of the program under critical review.
In college our primary and typical audience is our professors, that’s why we are required to take composition I and II for academic writing. They want to read what we have written in order to determine if we have mastered the course content. But as an employee or worker, our audience is unknown with varying backgrounds, so colleges should adopt a focus that models on business writing. General Education courses may be one of the most hated requirements in college by students. These courses are required amongst all college students regardless of one’s major or minor. General Education courses may vary with schools but usually consist of: the arts and humanities, social science, natural science, mathematics, and writing. These courses should be optional; students should be able to take them at their own interest such as with elective courses. The three purposes and missions of higher education are education, research, and public service. The first one to be addressed is education. In his paper, “Goals: The Intended Outcomes of Higher Education,” author Bowen (1977) has stated education is “not only the academic curricula, classes, and laboratories, but also all those influences upon students flowing from association with peers and faculty members and from the many and varied experiences of campus” (p. 24). Educating students is an important mission for higher education, but educating students is not limited to their academics. The mission for higher education involving education can be categorized as cognitive learning, affective development, and practical competence (Bowen, 1977, p. 27). Not only is higher education a rite of passage, for some, it is also an opportunity to have a better life. With options ranging from small technical schools to large, world-renowned universities, the greater Atlanta area provides all students with a variety of options regarding the location, price, and degree programs in which they wish participate. Containing universities such as the Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, and Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia is equipped with the ability to provide students with the access that they need to obtain the greatest education available to them.
Students in America pursue post-secondary education for a diversity of motives. Most do it for economic stability and consequently tend to develop a profession for the sake of earning an income as their primary goal. Comfortable living accompanies such motive, action which leads individuals to wish to obtain a substantial life where they may enjoy financial freedom. Some students look for a broad, liberal arts education, while others become focused on a specific career. However, there are students who simply enroll to take one or two classes for the joy of learning and/or keeping up with their skills.
Higher education has evolved greatly since the time of Adam Smith, however, to this day, universities can still benefit from Smith’s The Wealth of Nations. In particular the excerpt, On the Education of Youth, in which many of his opinions that are conveyed can apply to some of the current issues at many universities, including those at DePauw. While there is an array of topics when it pertains to higher education, this paper will primarily focus on Smith’s opinion of DePauw’s graduation requirements and how this affects course selection. It is my belief that by gaining seven new faculty members Smith & Gray College will uphold the standards, support the needs of students and develop new innovative ideas. As I reflect on what I learned at the conference I believe that the tutors that are employed at Smith & Gray College can be used to teach entrance college courses while providing one on one support for students, and partner with faculty focused on research. Hiring seven new faculty members will allow the tenured faculty to easily mentor seven new faculty members verses ten. I also believe that bringing in seven new faculty members will assist in brainstorming new innovative ideas to enhance Smith & College. Faculty members will be provided the support needed to carry these innovative ideas by utilizing tutors to tutor students, or provide one on one support during class meetings, at the request of faculty, as well as, assist with research

Choosing to attend college can be a tough decision, but selecting the courses to be taken are even harder. Many incoming college freshmen are excited to embark on their chosen majors; however, the majority of students do not start in courses in their chosen field. As I worked on my discussions the last two evenings the first one around our writing discipline, stuck out to me, and the light bulb within me glimmered slightly. Because all of my writing is business writing, whether I’m writing a response to a regulatory agency over a customer complaint, a policy or procedure, an email to our Chief Compliance Officer. The majority of this is factual writing, where I’m writing to state the facts, the process, etc. While there are occasions when I provide my opinion, my opinion is still based on my interpretation of a legal requirement.
