As an avid reader, I’ve read a countless number of fiction stories. Everything from fantasy to romance books by famous authors, to unpublished short stories online. I’ve always held an appreciation for the talent that these writers have to bring their thoughts to life in such creative ways, but I believe that, before taking W207, I always thought the talent came naturally to these writers. I believed they had this gift for writing that allowed words to flow from their fingertips. Now, I’ve come to learn that, while some great authors may have a natural affinity for writing in poetic and captivating ways, there is an immense amount of work that goes into creating the stories that I read. I always believed that I did not have this gift of the great writers therefore I should never try to write, but W207 has opened my eyes so I can see that anyone can write great stories if they have the tools to do it. I don’t mean to suggest that my stories are “great” in that they are comparable to classic works of fiction or even the short stories we read in class. They have, however, undergone significant improvements from their first incarnations that make them great in my eyes. These improvements are the results of using the tools that make up a story to construct and shape mine into something better. The tools I most heartily used were plot, to make a story with all the aspects that make it enjoyable, and theme, to give the reader some insight that they were unaware of before
If we are to establish that good writing is made up of basic control of the language that is being written, adherence to conventions of grammar and style, and the ability to present a cogent argument and reasonable support for that argument, I may qualify as a good writer. However, it must be recognized that there is a great deal of distance from simply being good at a subject or task and having developed mastery of the same. Thus, I would argue that while I am a good writer I have yet to cross the threshold of skill that qualifies me as a great writer. Greatness in writing exhibits a level of awareness and development of thought that is rare and hard to achieve. As a product of this class, I would like to find myself closer to that finely
The assigned reading of “Good Readers and Good Writers” by Vladimir Nabokov probes the subject that is the necessary attributes an individual must have in order for them to be successful readers and writers of literature. A list of ten rules is then stated in the essay and sets them as the baseline commandments that an individual must follow in order to be some kind of a devoted “good reader”. While the criteria sets the standard for a “good reader” it aligns with that of a good analyzer and can be applied to that sense. For example one of the first pieces of advice states “If one begins with a readymade generalization, one begins at the wrong end and travels away from the book before one has started to understand it” (Nabokov 1). If a
As a reader and writer I always faced given assignments with the intent of doing exceptional jobs and take a sense of pride in my work to complete my tasks. As a reader, I will bore myself through out an entire book and realize I didn 't understand a single thing. Although as a writer, I can go on for so long losing myself on a topic because it feels more interactive. Reflecting on my experiences as a reader and writer have been very bold, I never really found a joy or an interest to become the exceptional student who stands out amongst others because, I always felt ok with myself and my results with the way I did things.
I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written.
There comes a time in life where we see an impossible obstacle, and do the best that we can to overcome it. For me, this was my AP English Language class in high school during senior year. The time was now, summer is nearly over. I analyzed my strengths and weaknesses, giving a full re-evaluation of myself. In the end, I consider myself an average writer. There have been times in the past when I’ve written letters or personal stories. However, those have never been my strongest set of skills. While I have been serious with my writing, I never recognized the unbelievable advantages that good writing has. Therefore, I’ve made it my goal to improve my literal skills and become a great writer. Maybe this new class will assist me in becoming that
There is a multitude of jobs and careers I want to have, as some of you may know, but I think we’re only allowed to talk about one. However, there is one job in particular that I know that I’ll do, whether I’m paid for it or not. That job is writing. Not only do you need language skills, but I believe that you will need creativity and an immense amount of patience in order to be a successful writer of any sort.
“To write to be a writer, I have to trust and believe in myself as a speaker, as a voice for the images. I have to believe that can communicate with images and words that I can do it well. A lack of belief in my creative self is a lack of belief in my total self and vice versa- I cannot separate my writing from any part of my life. It is all one” (95).

I’m not a notable writer, nor have I really wanted to join the writing industry. However, I have been interested in other people’s writing. From their deep meanings, content, and different formats/styles. It’s a wondrous creation made from within our imagination and experiences. It has inspired me to write too. I’ve been writing most of my life that it has become a necessity. And now from my past experiences with writing, I try my best to improve my skills as a writer for the future.
“Once you take time to figure out your beliefs about you as a writer, and about writing itself, you can begin to see where you hold yourself back from actually writing in the first place (Litchfield-Fink).” The article “The Real Reason Why You Can’t Write” by Esther Litchfield-Fink, is going over how people that want to write or be writers, are limited by their beliefs. Esther goes over a “secret” about writing that helps overcome this problem and can make anyone a successful writer. With being optimistic and having positive beliefs you can accomplish your goal of being a writer.
Most individuals, no matter their age, struggle with writing with proper mechanics and content. In the book “On Writing,” author Steven King gives his personal perspective and advice on the craft of writing. King also shares his story about how he has become the successful writer he is today. In his novel, King wants to reveal to his readers that it is essential to read a lot and write a lot to become a great writer. He begins by talking about how there are no bad dogs and relates it to human beings.
J.K. Rowling once said, “Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power to that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared” (“J. K. Rowling Quotes."). I want to be a writer. A writer is a person who is a fountain of imagination and innovation. A writer is a creator of worlds, a spinner of new realities and master of creativity. When I was younger, I would often spend hours sitting up in trees, my feet dangling and swinging lightly to an unknown rhythm; I would listen as the outside world seemingly stood still. My younger sister would always be a few branches away, and she would plead for stories. I spun worlds of monsters and heroes, worlds full of love and magic and insanity. I would become immersed in my stories as my listeners, and started jotting down concepts that would come to me during a dull day. Once, I had a journal full of oddball ideas and intrepid adventures. I adore my gift, and it’s inspired me to become a professional writer so I can give my ideas a new life, and become real.
Through this creative writing class, I gained a newfound respect for writing. Writing had allowed me and continues to allow me to see the world through a different perspective; with this thought in mind, I decided I would no longer allow creative writing to be placed on the backburner in my life. When the outside world goes to shambles, I know I can turn to writing to help me make sense of what is happening and to escape life’s troubles even if only
Due to my excellence in middle school English, I was placed into the Honors English I class. This reawakened the childhood talent I had held onto so dearly. Growing up, I always had a knack for storytelling. Even before my brain knew the alphabet existed, my little hands formed scribbles in which I would tell the daring story of a hero saving the day from certain destruction. The heroes always were my age, and sometimes I even wrote myself as the hero. My imagination only seemed to grow stronger with age, and by the time I had turned fourteen I had come to a decision: I was going to write a book.
The Writer’s Process combines proven practices of successful authors with cognitive science research about how our minds work. When you learn to work with your brain instead of against
