Presenting Problem The Guadalupe Center is a religious nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the Providence Hospital community outreach program. The agency was founded in 2003 by the sisters of charity when they saw necessities of the Hispanic community and other underserve groups. The Guadalupe center was created to help immigrants who were being discriminated and undertreated because of their race, lack of education and language barrier. The Guadalupe Center used to be funded by Mission and Ministry Inc., but it is now completely funded by the Providence Hospital. 1. The first few weeks of internship, at Ramona Adult Day Health Care Center (ADHC) located in Baldwin Park, Mr. Talib Abdullah, the social work field instructor, provided information about the center, such as their mission and the services ADHC offered to their participants. He also mentioned what was expected from the intern student. The first activity involved was to identify what kind of population the center served. It was rapidly identified that ADHC served participants from middle adulthood (approximately 40 to 65 years) to late adulthood (65 years and beyond). The majority of the participants served were Filipino. It was also detected that the second major groups were Hispanics and Latinos. Caucasian and Black participants were present, however, they were only a few. It was later required to be introduced as the new social worker intern and socialize with the participants. Feeling of anxiety arose when introducing personal. Communication was essential in assisting and getting to know the participants, however, there were a few language barriers with the Filipino group. Their primary language was Tagalog with limited English.
While visiting the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe I discovered how religion is capable of bring a community together to worship one religion. The cathedral shrine of the virgin of Guadalupe is a catholic church and is the second largest Catholic Church membership in the United States. As a result, I found it to be the perfect location to visit for this reflection paper because of my family has been practicing the Catholic religion for many years. Additionally, this experience also allowed me to go back to my religious root because I had little exposure to religion while growing up and have not considered myself religious because of this reason. Visiting the cathedral was an eye-opening religious experience, from the exterior to

When thinking about social work, there are different avenues that a worker can explore in this vast field. Because a social workers job is multifaceted, workers can not only integrate themselves in an already created avenue, but can also tailor a field, specifically for a need in the community. Looking at the many different fields in the area of social work, the area of Social Workers in Mental Health facilities and outpatient clinics stands out as an area of depth and interest.

On September 18, 2015 I interviewed Mrs. Anisha Nix at Ted’s Montana Grill in Downtown Decatur, Georgia at 5:48pm. Mrs. Nix is a Family Consultant Supervisor at the DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center. I interviewed Mrs. Nix, not only for the position that she holds but also because she did not start off with a degree in social work or sociology. Before Anisha took an interest in social services, she gained her masters in Biology from Spelman College. Once done with her undergrad Ms. Nix decided that she would pursue and ultimately gain her Masters in Social Work at Georgia State University, then continue on to become a licensed Social Worker. As the Supervisor of the Advocacy Center, it is her job to supervise the Family Consultants at the
In 1906, Ida had a failed relationship, and her sister-in-law wanted Ida to attend school in Massachusetts with her and her brother. Ida attended the Boston School for Social Workers, and lived with her brother in Massachusetts (Praglin, 2007). Ida volunteered at the Massachusetts General Hospital with the help of her brother before graduation in 1907, and helped others develop programs for the facility. Ida was introduced to Richard Cabot that helped Cannon develop Cabot’s program. Ida has made so many contributions to not only the Massachusetts, but to the social work field today.
The more field training a professional receive, the better prepared and equipped they are to start their careers successfully. Declining an internship may result in the case worker making the wrong judgement call and unwittingly ruining the client’s life. All social workers must have certain foundation skills that are properly developed through educational institutions that follow the CSWE’s accreditation standards. Some critics feel the internship is unnecessary for non-traditional students with impressive skills, knowledge and experience. However, training standards should be raised, not lowered for social workers. Removing internships contributes to lower levels of professional expertise, clinical understanding and practice
