The History Of America In The Twentieth Century

Over the past few weeks of class, we have covered the first five chapters of our textbook, written by George Brown Tindell and David Emory Shi called, “America, A Narrative History.” Each chapter told the reader a narration of the history of America, as opposed to an expository version of America’s history. Each chapter had its own main idea over a portion of history, along with many details that cover the importance of the main idea. As a reader, one may obtain a deeper appreciation for the country 's history, prior to entering the class on the first day. The most important aspect of history, besides the battles that are fought, is the different cultures that make up today’s modern America.

Today America is one of the wealthiest, strongest, and hardworking countries in the world. It has population of over three hundred million and growth rate of 0.97% annually. America as a nation is known to have done many great contributions to the world such as: the idea of presidency, inventing telephone, discovering electricity, inventing planes, the first nation to put a man on moon, and many more. America has grown and multiplied over time and it is still increasing. Even though today America stands out apart from other countries, it was built from nothing but scrap.

If I had the fortuity to adventure to any place or time of my choosing, I would undoubtedly select, what I believe to be, the greatest era of American history. This was a time when every man’s fingerprint set a precedent for the future of American government. The age where citizens gallantly fought for revolution from their oppressors, nobly laying down their lives for freedom for their descendants. A generation that turned a moment into a movement by discovering their voices and utilizing them to shape a new nation that they got to build. I would travel to watch the birth of America in the 18th century.

The United States changed dramatically from 1865 to 1950. Many changes occurred in industrialization, foreign affairs, government, as well as in society and culture. The events that took place within this time period helped shape this country into what it is today.

Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle in their book “Rereading America” feel that commencing college is a very disturbing experience. So many things we have to deal while starting college, but the major challenges are expanded difficulty levels and higher expectation which we are not familiar over the years of high school. In order to solve this issue, we have to remodel ourselves by taking up the challenge and rethink about our strength and flaws. To succeed in college we need to be mentally strong and dedicated towards our goal.

From its humble beginnings, the United States of America has expressed its intention to assist individuals who desired freedom by serving as an exemplar of liberty. Originally, Americans sought to preserve their republic by avoiding all foreign altercations and external constraints. At the dawn of the nineteenth century, in his first inaugural address Thomas Jefferson warned his audience of the potential dangers of foreign affairs by stating, “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none,” pleading for a delicate balance between national security and commerce. This sentiment on foreign policy was reiterated on July 4, 1821, by Secretary of State John Quincy Adams when he said, “America does not go abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.” At the dawn of the 21st century, the implications from Adam’s statement are no longer consistent with the demands of American national security. The key tenets of the Bush doctrine, democratization and preemption, have deviated from Adam’s vision and redefined United States foreign policy for the 21st century.

September 11, 2001 was a milestone in the history of the United States, which experienced a collective shock and trauma that has never been forgotten. In the United States most of all, the entire airline and tourist industry was driven to the edge of bankruptcy and would not have survived at all without a major bailout by the federal government. It was already in poor condition for many years after deregulation in 1978, the September 11th attacks were a Near Death Experience. After that time, the airlines decided that they could never permit another attack like this or they would be driven out of business. As it was, their stock prices collapsed and passenger schedules did not return to pre-September 11th levels for four years. All previous security plans were judged to be useless and inadequate, and were taken out of the hands of private security contractors and turned over to the federal government. New and more restrictive laws like the Patriot Act came into being, and the U.S. launched an all-out war on Al Qaeda that has continued for eleven long years.

Chapter eight speaks of the growth of the American "empire", using political manipulation to control the south. During the reconstruction of the South, many Southerners felt less aided and crippled further due to taxes, political reformation, and of course the loss of slave labor. In terms of political corruption, the Southern states were forced back into the union but were denied representation in the Union, and used political control to rob the states financially. Taking the votes of the newly freed blacks also created a tension with white and black relations that last to even today, commonly from the Ku Klux Klan. If anything, the attempt to create stability to the war-torn South ended up making things worse in both the North and South.

Can there be two different economies in one single country? Looking at America during the 1800’s, one can prove that can be a diverse economy – depending on one’s region. There is a vast difference between the modern, industrial economy of the North, and the rural, antebellum setting in the South. The North embraced modernization in its economy, while the South tried to delay it eternally.

Although the two time era’s of the 1930’s and the 1960’s are 30 years apart, America changed in so many ways, but also stayed the same. During these times the American stock market crashed and pretty much every American was poor and out of work. It was a very hard time for everyone but especially for people of color. Colored people were very discriminated and segregated from the rest. The American economy was in a black hole, people suffered for decades.

The relationship between America and the government has changed drastically between the 19th century and the 20th century. It began as a power struggle with the American’s living under the hand of their government, wanting freedom from its upper hand. Over the years a progressive change in the everyday life of American’s evolved. There was no longer fear to government but a rebellion of shaping the country into something more than government ruled society. This progressivism gave Americans freedoms, shaping America into something different, a nation working towards an ultimate goal, Freedom. Unfortunately Freedom will never be a right or a finalized agreement, but instead a constant fight.

This essay will examine the rise of “modern America”, there were economic, religious, and aspect of life changes took place and it was greatly changed the Americans society’s perceptions, specifically, the north and the south. The rise of “modern America” was greatly motivated immigrants to come to the United States for economic opportunity, industrialization in the North after the civil war created new businesses and job regulations, and the demand for social changes; all of these factors shaped America socially, politically, and economically.

Americans in the U.S. take pride in these standards and in the freedoms that this democratic nation has established. The 20th century will always be remembered in American history as a century of radical changes on the social and political fronts of the nation. Literature, too, evolved quickly from specific, compartmentalized fields which fit into categories, to works which had no set definition—nobody knew what to do with them. These changes also took place in poetry; artistic expression began to change across the arts and so did the mediums. Poets across the nation
