The Matrix Trilogy is a science fiction franchise that explores a variety of political and philosophical phenomena. In particular, The Matrix Trilogy is rich with Christian symbolism, imagery, principles and biblical narratives. Indeed, Frederica Mathewes-Green of Christianity Today remarks, “The Christian themes in the film are so obvious that even nonbelievers can spot them across the room” (Mathewes-Green, 2003). This evaluative reflection addresses the manner in which The Matrix Trilogy touches upon God, belief, and spirituality in action by way of interpreting the Christian symbols as they appear throughout the films. The Matrix Trilogy is a successful example of a film series that employs spiritual truths from the Christian tradition directly into its narrative and storyline, beginning with the appearance of the Holy Trinity. The traditional Holy Trinity is composed of the divine father, divine son, and divine spirit. The main characters, Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo, each represent aspects of the Holy Trinity. However, these films present viewers with a radically new approach to the trinity. Given that the character Trinity is female, the sacred trio put …show more content…
It has discussed everything from the presence of good and evil spirits, the Holy Trinity iconography, the presence of Jesus Christ and the second coming of “the One” (Neo) or Jesus Christ, as well as the nature of Armageddon or the last battle for the human souls of Zion. Indeed, as Austin Cline states, “The presence of Christian ideas in The Matrix films is simply undeniable” (Cline, n.d.). This evaluative reflection has mostly talked about the images that the creators of the films, the Wachowski Brothers, chose to include in order to explore how God and spirituality influence human beings’
Although The Matrix does not explicitly reveal any connections to the Christian faith, many can be deduced from the symbols and messages portrayed throughout the movie. As such, many figures presented in the Bible can be seen throughout the entirety of the film. Neo being the central character in The Matrix can be compared to Christ in the way that he is portrayed to be the savior of the people living in a false reality. Furthermore, Neo’s name can be rearranged into the word “One”, alluding to the Chosen One, which to Christians further stresses his symbolic relationship to Jesus Christ. In addition, Neo undergoes many experiences that relate to various events in the life of Jesus. An occurrence such as Jesus’ recognition by John the Baptist
The movie “The Matrix” is a clear demonstration of Descartes Meditation One, they both question the reality in which they are living, and rather or not if it is real or if it is controlled by something else, questioning the current reality. For Descartes, it is controlled by evil demons, whereas a supercomputer controls the Matrix. Both are in what is perceived as a dream state where the senses cannot be trusted.
Millions of people flock to the movie theater year after year on a quest to be entertained. Even a mediocre movie has the ability to take the audience to another place, escaping the realities of their own life, if only for a mere two hours. Some movies are simply pure entertainment. And then, there are those movies that provoke conversation long after the film has been viewed. Dystopian themes are not new, and have historically provided a template to gage the course of human existence. The Matrix portrays a society where humans exist without freedom. The film is not only entertaining, but also thought provoking. It paints a world with two different dimensions, one with the mind numbing
The first theme of Youngblood’s book is Monotheism. A basic understanding that makes the reader aware that God is ‘…God, and there is no other” (Isaiah
Huston Smith is known for his research and interest in the religions of the world. He published a book, Religion’s of Man in 1958, which was later revised and renamed World’s Greatest Religions. This book was a summary of the adventures Huston Smith went on in his life as he traveled the world searching for new knowledge and understanding of the religions of the world. Huston Smith also made a collection of videos about various religions across the world, known as his “Wisdom of Faith” video series. I recently watched the Christianity and Judaism video from this collection and discovered many of Smith’s views on those religions.
In Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” there is a forceful religious connotation. Huxley’s uses of biblical allusions emphasize the inborn necessity of spiritual belief, in even the most neutral society. By assimilating religious references into the population, specific characters, and science, he successfully illustrates the absolute need for the religion in any society
Throughout this semester I have learned many of the different christian doctrines. Many of them were challenged and also accepted in my weekend trip throughout Saint Louis. I think one of the most important topics that was discussed during my weekend was the consideration of the Trinity. In the Christian thought the word “trinity” is a term used to talk about the Christian doctrine that God exists as a unity of three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three of the staple thoughts include; God is three person; each person is divine; there is only one God. In their relations to one another, they are stated to be on in all else, co-equal, co-eternal and consubstantial. With these three thoughts about the Trinity you also must remember that Christianity is a monotheistic religion.
The word “trinity” is used to describe the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Though all three are used in scripture there is no description of the “trinity.” Throughout this paper the concept of the “trinity” will be examined. First, the paper will have a summary of relevant sections from three sources: the New Catholic Encyclopedia, the older Catholic Encyclopedia, and a peer-reviewed theological article from a contemporary journal. Two concise analyses will follow the summary. In the first analysis there will be a comparison between the older and newer Catholic encyclopedias to see how over time theological reflection has changed. In the second analysis there will be a comparison between the New Catholic Encyclopedia and a contemporary theological article to show the differences between the two theological perspectives.
As stated by Goodale, any repetitive elements or imagery in writing has a symbolic significance (2007, p. 56). For instance, most authors use repeated imagery in order to produce the aspect of mood or impression. Similarly, from the reading “The Matrix” by Larry and Andy Wachowski, we can recognize this aspect of recurrent imagery, which seems to have achieved a significant purpose in the text. This script was written in 1998, however, it still remains relevant today due to its visionary approach of orchestrating events and symbolic references (Crystal, 2004, p. 66). In the beginning of the script, we see the authors state, “a blinding cursor pulses in the electric darkness like a heart coursing with phosphorous light,
In the film, The Matrix, a world exists where machines rule over the human race, using them as an energy source. The film plays with the idea of a real versus simulated world. In addition to reality, the film portrays certain Christian and non-Christian based themes. These themes are discussed by Gregory Bassham, along with the presence of religious pluralism, in his article “The Religion of The Matrix and the Problems of Pluralism.” Bassham’s article is unbalanced and does not follow his thesis statement; however, he employs topic sentences to introduce new ideas and explain how they are relevant to his argument, and secondary evidence to prove his claims.[Thesis statement doesn’t explicitly say whether the rhetoric techniques are good or bad. ]
The bible is very influential in Americas society. Over 85% of Americans own a bible in their house. It has inspired and affected many movies in the world. The matrix uses the bible to explain that, the world was created to hide the truth from humans which are kept in slavery. Neo who is the main character knows the world is messed up and is going to do something to fix it. Neo who is representing the Messiah is on a mission to find Morpheus who is representing John the Baptist. Neo whose original name Thomas Anderson, Which Anderson means the Son of man was changed to Neo which means one. As in the chosen one of
One argues that today we have a crisis of belief, not a crisis of faith. To explain this crisis, I will briefly examine the relationship between faith and belief, explain why cultural shift is important to note when trying to understand religious issues, go into detail on the three hallmarks of each of the two cultures by showing how they compare to each other, show how Tillich’s notion of correlation deals with this idea of culture and a crisis of belief, and explain how Marsh’s notion of a “theology of negotiation” (33) fits with Lonergan’s definition and allows him to argue that film can help us raise theological questions.
The Trinity consists of God, the Father, Jesus, the Son of God and the Holy Spirit. The Christian faith recognizes there is one God and He is one with His Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The purpose of this essay is to describe the interrelationship of the three persons of the Trinity. This will include the concepts of the economic trinity, the essential trinity and the social trinity.
Through the movie we see parallel’s of Neo and Christian Mythology. Temptation from Satan to Jesus and the temptation to Neo from the Agents, are some very profound similarities between the two personages.
As a result, fellowship, prayer, Bible study, worship, and most importantly salvation in its purest form can be discerned and acted upon correctly. In addition, a further understanding can be thus gained regarding the person of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Finally, heresies and heretical groups or beliefs can lead God’s followers astray from the truth and create an improper understanding, and thus relationship with God. Positions past and present have, and are, attempting to mislead Christians about the Trinity. A skewed view of the Trinity can result in a view of God as either divinely apart from creation or simply a better version of all the best attributes of humans. Some positions even take away from the Divinity of Jesus Christ. All of these views severely diminish who God is and alters a proper and true relationship and worship. It is a necessity that these errant views be exposed as a hindrance to God in order not to mislead God’s followers. Likewise a Biblically sound explanation of the Trinity is needed. As a result, a true and pure knowledge of the concept of the Trinity is crucially needed to understand God and be obedient to the Bible.
