Overlooking the Negatives Someone’s outward appearance never fully shows their true self. Sandra Cisneros uses the novella, The House on Mango Street, to show that people need to be accepting of themselves. Esperanza does not see the good things in herself. She tries really hard, but can not find them. She later learns that she is perfect just the way she is. Esperanza’s negative view on herself slowly changes as she begins to focus on her larger community and her place within it. Through this, Cisneros shows that knowing and accepting where one comes from is an important part of growing up and determining one’s identity. Esperanza is confused on the meaning of her name. She is not confident, and she does not like a lot of things about herself. The author states in the vignette, “My Name”, “In English my name means hope. In spanish it means too many letters It means sadness, it means waiting” (Cisneros 10). She contradicts the meaning of her name. She does not like it. She finds it too confusing. The English and Spanish meaning are completely different. Hope and sadness are almost exact opposites. Esperanza does not know what her name means, and so she does not know who she really is. She thinks that because she was born in the year of the horse, she is bad luck, even though she is not. The author shows this idea, through the vignette, “Born Bad”, “Most likely I will go to hell and most likely I deserve to be there” (Cisneros 58). Esperanza is set on thinking that she is bad luck just for being born in the year of the horse. Her mom says that she was born on an evil day. This is just a superstition, and Esperanza believes them. She wants to believe the good things about herself that everyone tells her, but she just can not find them herself.
