Unit 1: Biology 1 B1.1 Keeping Healthy A combination of a balanced diet and regular exercise is needed to help keep the body healthy. Our bodies provide an excellent environment for many microbes which can make us ill once they are inside us. Our bodies need to stop most microbes getting in and deal with any microbes which do get in. Vaccination can be used to prevent infection. Nutrients A mixture of different types of food in the correct amounts is needed to maintain health. The main food groups are carbohydrates, fats and proteins. This table summarises some typical sources of these nutrients and why our bodies need them. They are needed in small amounts for healthy functioning of the body. Imbalanced diets An imbalanced diet causes a person to become malnourished. For example: too little food may lead to a person being underweight too much food may lead to a person being overweight. A poor diet may also lead to deficiency diseases. For example, too little vitamin D in the diet can lead to rickets, which affects the proper
varied food supply make severe vitamin deficiencies unlikely but this doesn’t mean everyone gets enough of everything all the time. Marginal deficiencies often go unnoticed and can be mistaken for other conditions.
The influences of underlying health conditions can result in the need for specific nutrients as well as influencing what people are or aren’t able to eat.
Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are known as macronutrients as the body needs masses of these nutrient components in order to carry out the bodies’ essential functions.
Carbohydrates are essential for providing energy and are broken down inside the body and turned into sugar that is released slowly.-Dietary fibre is also found in this food group and used to keep regulation of the bowels and isn't actually absorbed into the bodies. Instead it passes through the gastrointestinal tract and excreted. This makes sure the bowels and intestines are kept healthy.
In chapter ten we learned what the six nutrients our bodies need. These nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. In order to keep our bodies healthy we need to ensure we are getting the proper amount of each nutrient. Carbohydrates, our bodies main source of energy, can be absorbed through bread, pasta, beans, and vegetables. Proteins, nutrients our body uses to build and maintain its cells and tissues, can be found in grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.
Sustenance is such an astounding thing, it sustains us in such a large number of ways. From each nutritional category you get diverse supplements: minerals, vitamins, starches, fats, protein, fiber.
In everything you eat, there are different type of nutrients like: calories as known as energy, carbohydrates, fat, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Each of those nutrients that provide by the food we eat all have different functions, and should be eaten in limited portions. If a person constantly eats too little proteins they can become susceptible to disease, it can cause a person to develop anemia, dry skin can develop and in women their bones can become brittle. If a person does not have enough carbohydrates in their diet they can develop malnutrition which is also called lack of calories. If a person does not have enough lipids in their diet it can also cause serious health risks. Fat provides nutrients for the body and supports the body’s basic function. Lack of this macronutrient can cause problems with a person’s immune system, skin and vision.
A healthy diet and exercise plan may not seem to be active ways to prevent infection, but these life style choices can boost immunity so if infection occurs, the body is in a strong enough state to prevent extreme symptoms. Maintaining a healthy diet allows for the body to be ready for possible threats. Eating beneficial foods on the food pyramid and eating a day’s full dose of vitamins and nutrients will help keep the human body in prime condition. Also, exercising will maintain the body’s strength and allow for individuals to prepare for virus infection. Exercising thirty minutes a day can greatly impact overall body health. Eating healthy and exercising daily will boost the body’s immune system and prepare the body to fight against infection.
It is essential for the human body to consume the proper amount of nutrients every day. Our bodies rely on nutrients to live a healthy lifestyle. The human body needs the equivalent amount of fats, carbohydrates, sodium, proteins, vitamins, and so for. Our body is provided with these dietary supplements through fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy products, and meats. When these supplements are not provided to the human body, there will be a decrease of health to one self. Individuals with the disorder Pica will experience the loss of important nutrients to the body.

A diet too low on lipids lowers the level of good cholesterol, decreases the body’s energy level and can disturb the body’s formation of cells and cell functions.
