The teacher must know how to set the tone for the classroom and ensure that it is a productive learning environment. The teacher wants to avoid anything that would provoke them negatively as well as the students. At the same time, they must know what is needed to reinforce good behavior.

As an educator the decisions that are made should be with the students’ best interest in mind. Standard 5 has given me more knowledge and ability to promote the success of all students by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner. Modeling school principles of self-awareness, safeguarding the values of equity, and diversity, and promoting social justice within the schools are all elements of standard 5.

Dimension 3.1, classroom environment, routines, and procedures, the teachers is expected to organize and maintain a “safe, accessible, and efficient classroom” (TEA, 2016, p. 15). Dimension 3.2, managing student behavior, focuses on establishing expectations for behavior. And dimension 3.3, classroom culture, consists of creating a culture of mutual respect in which all learners are engaged (TEA, 2016). Creating a good communication relationship between the students, parents, and school. The teachers must create ways to communicate with their students’ parents. Keeping communication lines open to all parties involved will allow students to get a better education. The activity I completed for this standard was writing a letter for the parents of special needs students. This letter was to ensure the parents that their students were being taken care of at the school. I went over the letter with the kids and shared with them it had ways for their parents to encourage

Leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders. This quote by Tom Peters best summarizes my philosophy of teacher leadership. As a teacher leader, it is up to me to inspire, direct, and encourage others so that stronger teacher, administrative, and student leaders may be born from the process. Teacher leadership involves collaboration between teachers, administrators, and teacher leaders with the goal of positively impacting the student learning environment. With student learning as the ultimate objective, teacher leadership “becomes an indispensable avenue for school improvement” (Coggins & McGovern, 2014, p. 21). So how do I as a teacher leader begin this process? I believe that teacher leadership can be achieved through three means: modeling, mentoring, and collaborating.

2.2 Key to promoting appropriate positive behaviour and the respect for others in the teaching environment is for the teacher to establish and agree ground rule. To support the rules the teacher must pro-actively lead by example, challenging inappropriate behaviour when it occurs.

Also, standard three comes into effect due to poor management of day to day operations, scheduling conflicts, and eventually having to force all the staff to redo schedules, times, and routines. Ethics, as stated in ISLLC standard five, can also be in question because of forcing Maggie to undergo a change in schedule after she has collaborated and finalized routines with other teachers and is somewhat taken advantage of as a sub-contracted out employee. These issues result in a poor school culture hindering the learning and growth of the students and staff as stated in ISLLC standard two. Taking all of these issues and concerns into account, we can ultimately see an even bigger problem with the school’s shared vision which should be developed, implemented, and sustained by school leaders according to ISLLC

I always thought I would be a teacher and I would make differences in lives and it would be the greatest experience in the world for me, yet being a teacher wasn’t enough, I had a need to expand my education. I decided that perhaps I needed a new career, however, I felt certain education remained my passion. I began to explore new areas of education and I realized I still want to be a member of a classroom, a school and curriculum. I aspire to guide those leading our classrooms.

The initial standard I found significant was “Conduct with Students.” This standard states that “an educator shall always maintain a professional relationship with all students, both in and outside the classroom”. This means that

As teachers, we need to create a comfortable classroom climate where there is a feeling of acceptance and celebrate differences among each student. Effective teachers will also demonstrate appropriate planning, preparing and execution of content. Standard 5 is focused on Middle Level Professional Roles. Along with understanding and applying knowledge of young adolescents, as discussed with Standard 1, it is equally important to be an advocate for the students. By using professional leadership strategies, being an advocate for all young adolescents helps maximize their growth and learning. In order to be fully effective, working closely with family member and also with the community strengthen the ability to achieve this success.

A teacher in the classroom setting is considered a professional in that environment because they have the training and skills necessary by which to create a setting which is conducive to learning. To aide in the establishment of a setting which is conducive to learning the teacher must create guidelines which help to provide structure for expected behavior as well as for the dissemination of information between teacher and student. As I began this Leadership in Education course, I entered with an open mind and eagerness to learn about varying leadership styles and approaches. Over the years, I have fortunately been exposed to numerous genuine, caring, exceptional leaders in higher education. They all shared one commonality: student-centeredness. This has been my compass and guides me in my work. Through this course, I wanted to learn how I can better support students, whether directly or indirectly by leading other professionals and para-professionals in their work with students.

There are always chances and possibilities to become a good leader regardless the odds against you, gender, age, race, education, previous experience, etc. This paper defines what leadership is and it explains the relationship between leadership and influence. It also highlights the importance of finding opportunities to develop skills and creating strong to become a good leader. It is also emphasized the power of influence that comes from motivating your team, to improve performance and satisfaction and that setting a clear goal is mandatory for good leadership. The conclusion summarizes all the topics under discussion.

The concept and practice of teacher leadership have gained momentum in the past two decades. Teachers are assuming more leadership functions at both instructional and organizational levels of practice. Empirical literature reveals effects of teacher leadership practice, teacher leader characteristics, and conditions that promote and challenge teacher leadership.
