When looking back at history, there is one constant used over and over regardless of the situation; this constant is age. History proves a person cannot vote until they are 18 years of age, could not drink until they were 18, which has risen to 21. A person must be 18 years of age to buy cigarettes, and all males under federal law must sign up for the draft and potentially could give-up their life defending this great nation. By virtue of turning 18 years old, a person inherits so many responsibilities which apply across most of the country, many of these responsibilities explained by Cynthia D. Kinser, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Virginia (2011) have far more responsibility than a 16-year-old working at a fast food restaurant. …show more content…
Moreover, to ensure the United States sends a clear message to other nations, Article 27 of the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC) includes child labor laws to ensure the safety of other children (SIROEN, 2013). Despite the fact the United States creates laws to protect children both home and our trade partners in various nations, enforcing such standards is extremely hard. In order to enforce these standards, it would mean constant surveillance of our trade partners to guarantee compliance. Furthermore, by limiting the type of job a child can perform solely based on age is having negative effects on manufacturers here in the United States, and is part of the issue with adults working jobs paying minimum wage. Adjusting the current age requirements before a child is able to gain employment experience will cause havoc and lead to adverse effects. Children today, are not being held accountable and many feel society owes them a way of life. While there are some jobs that a person under the age of 21 should not perform, there are many jobs currently restricted by the Fair Standards Labor Act, that if proper safety features were in place and train a 16-year-old to perform. Moreover, a 16-year-old cannot operate
“ In 1900, 18 percent of all American workers were under the age of 16.”(Foner) Child labor is a terrible thing that children have to go through. Although this was not considered a problem because of how normal it was.(Foner.). But due to the work of investigative journalist children today no longer have to worry about working in these dangerous environments.
I would set age limits because you can’t have young children working in unsafe places especially since they don’t have the intelligence and are too young to develop skills to work. Most importantly it just heinous and very immoral. We can’t have young children working anywhere in the world, straight up. Depending on the work, the age limit will differ but won’t be too young. An example, in places such as garment factory, I could set the age limit at 16 and working at a railroad at 21. I would do this because by the time of both ages, they would have acquired the mental and physical strengths to work in both the
The legal age limit to have full legal liberties in America should be eighteen and not twenty one. If one is able to serve their country in the military and fight in a foreign land, legally marry another adult individual, and smoke cigarettes, then they should also be able to legally consume alcohol, own a hand gun, rent a car, and gamble at the age of eighteen. These legal liberties are granted according to age and not one’s intellectual capacity or maturity to make a sound decision. If one has sound judgment and realizes that they will be held legally accountable for their actions then the age should not restrict privileges. Therefore, if one is enlisted to defend their country
Today Although many laws were passed in the United States to prevent underage working, select industries, namely agriculture, continue to employ children. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 rules that children aged 12 or older are legally allowed to work in agriculture. In addition, there is no set minimum age to work on small farms. According to Human Rights Watch, children who work in agriculture are 4 times more likely to drop out of school.
Hundreds of thousands of children under the age of 18 are working in agriculture in the United States. According to The Daily Transcript, “Many young people ages 13 to 16 work 70 to 80 hours a week and risk pesticide poisoning, heat illness, injuries and lifelong disabilities.” With this going on, children are being exposed to harm that they may or may not even be aware of. Child labor is more common in the United States (and all over the world) than one might think. There are laws currently in place dealing with child labor, “…which prohibit 12 and 13-year-olds from working most jobs, except on farms, and also say that youths aged 14 and 15 may not work in hazardous jobs, including construction.” (The Daily Transcript). Although these laws are in place, in 2010, 467 child-labor violations were found and
Political writer and author, Alan Greenblatt, in his thoughtful article “What is the Age of Responsibility?” argues that “...the point of laws regulating the behavior of young people should not be to restrict them. It's to begin educating them in the ways of responsible adulthood.”. The age of responsibility, when one is legally allowed to do things like live alone, obtain a paying job and a driving license, consume alcohol, get a tattoo, etc., as of today varies and contradicts itself in our country. The current system that determines the legal age of responsibility in our country is outdated and made up of arbitrary numbers. The age of responsibility should be taken into deeper consideration. Although the legal age of adulthood in this country is a controversial issue, the current system in place for determining the age of responsibility for minors somewhat makes sense with
At age 16, we are allowed to drive, which is almost a rite of passage in America, granting youth the freedom to travel. At 18, we are given most of our freedoms; this is the age where society deems us mature and responsible enough to make our own informed choices. We are given the right to vote, to serve on a jury. We are deemed old enough to be drafted and sent off to war. We are allowed to gamble away our money in casinos. In most states you are allowed to purchase and smoke cigarettes. How exactly is it fair that a 20 year old marine is able to go to war, get shot at, shoot back, all while developing a nicotine addiction through smoking yet when he comes home he is unable to buy a beer from the same place he bought a lottery ticket because someone in Washington, DC deemed that it was “too dangerous?” Where is the sense in
People may be old enough to vote and fight for our country, but at the age of eighteen,
Child labor has changed over the decades. American society has progressed overall as a country. Although in the 1900’s, there were laws in place to protect children, they were not strictly enforced. The struggles of a working minor in the 1900’s, the working minor today, and the laws that revolutionized the working conditions for minors. Working as a minor in the late 1890’s through early 1900’s was difficult.
Considering the fact that eighteen year-olds are perceived to be mature enough to have privileges and opportunities such as voting and enlisting to fight for our
When a person reaches the age of eighteen they are seen as a legal adult: “adults should have the right to make their own decisions about alcohol consumption”(Drinking Age). Legal adulthood comes with all different types of rights and responsibilities with drinking not included. Eighteen year olds are given the right to vote, to smoke, to have consensual sex, and to get married without parental consent. this give citizens the ability to make decisions for the future of the country, the ability to do something that could cause future health problems, the ability to do something that could result in a baby which is additional responsibility, and the ability to separate from a family to start a new one. The responsibilities of being a legal adult are having total responsibility for one's actions and being trusted to not break the law because of being able to be charged as an adult now. An eighteen year old is also possibly in charge of someone's life depending on the type of case they could serve as a jury member on if selected. An eighteen year old boy is required to sign up for a system that if selected he would have to possibly die fighting for the country(What You Can). If eighteen year olds are old enough to fight for their country and old enough to make decisions that affect the health of themselves and the life of another person then why are they not trusted to make their own decisions regarding alcohol?
When you are 18 you get privileges like being able to vote for a president. (Mitch Adams lowering the drinking age Page 1) When you turn 18 can go to war and take the risk of dying for your country. (Mitch Adams lowering the drinking age Page 1)Even after a long day of fighting you still can not just relax and have a cold beer. When you are 18 and go to court you are considered an adult (Valerie Richardson Coors Urges lower drinking age Page 2) and shouldn't an adult be
(The 26th Amendment took care of that problem by lowering the voting age to 18.) Today, military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are left to question why they can fight America's wars but still can't patronize its bars" (4). In this quote, Greenblatt says that laws choose a random age to legally take action, causing people to be confused. “Young people are bombarded with mixed signals about the scope of their rights and the depth of their responsibilities... In 10 states, a single 20-year-old cannot legally have sex with a 17-year-old.
The reasons that the age responsibility is 18 is because our government give you the right to do those things that anyone any younger don’t have. Those those rights weren’t given to them by other 18 year olds they were given by the people who believe in the “26th amendment by lowering the voting age to 18” (Greenblatt,p1). This law was passed because they had faith new the new generation to do the right thing. The old generation gave a chance to the new to make them responsibility.
Have you ever been restricted from certain privileges because the law revolves around a specific age? America’s way of governing young adults and their method of placing restrictions on certain ages is arbitrary and irrational. The article, “What is the Age of Responsibility?” by Alan Greenblatt explains how young adults are receiving mixed and confusing signals about the true age of maturity. The age of maturity should be 18 for many reasons.
