The Importance Of Animal Testing In Scientific Research

Animal testing has been one of the issues that people are fighting overtime because of its moral. Even though some results of tests are successful on people, many people are still fighting for the animal’s rights. They believe that animals should have their own rights to live a free life where they belong, just like their species. In scientists point of view, animals have been one of the main subjects to test on, but a lot of them are currently looking forward to use and develop alternatives for the cruel act of animal testing.

Ever since the late 1960’s and the early 1970’s, animal research has been under extreme fire for what they do. This is mainly due to the many changing perspectives on the relationship between humans and the other aspects of the world that are surrounding them. There are many main reasons for this change, but the main reason is the different ideas that surrounded the use and exploration of animals in laboratories is what is being brought into question.

Throughout the years the use of animals in medical research has been a hot debate around the world. Although animal testing may be cruel and inhumane, thousands of humans are saved thanks to the research that animals supply researchers with. Animals testing have taken over our knowledge of medicine and treatments to a whole different level. Animal testing also does this in a cheap and effective way. Without animals testing out knowledge wouldn’t be up to date, in other words animals’ testing is good.

A long time of debates go back and forth on the rights of all animals with further argument or debates, do humans have the right to use animals on medical testing and lab use? There are several issues that can be placed in this argument this research will acknowledge four important topics in the rights of animal testing. Is it right to use animals for testing? Is it right to compare animal DNA to human DNA in these animal experiments? Is it right to use real animals instead of computers to generate results? Is it right to state animals are being protected and cared for while giving toxins to make them sick? Therefore, the question needs to be asked if animals should be used for scientific experiments in labs all across the globe.

The testing of animals in scientific and commercial research has been debated for many years. Some people view animals as companions or part of the family, but others think of them as a way to advance medicine by providing researchers with a means to develop better medical techniques, discovering vaccines, and helping to find a cure for a disease. Regardless of how a person may view animals, they are worthy of better protection by our government and us as a society. Although some animal testing has been successful, there are research alternatives that could eliminate the pain, suffering, and deaths that animals endure in scientific research. Despite there being a large number of Americans favoring animal testing whether because they are misled as to its efficacy, are unaware of the true practices in this field, or simply have no regard for the life of these creatures in the slightest sense, animal testing has many negative aspects. Throughout the world and more specifically in the twenty-first century scientific community, experimental research done through the use of animal subjects has detrimental effects on animals. In addition, the processes tested on animals are not carried out with good moral standards, and the true value of scientific understanding gained from using these species is irrelevant. Animals used in laboratories dates as far back as the 17th century (Unknown, 2015)6. When I first read this statistic, it was surprising because the amount of time testing has been around really makes one think about the advancements made because of that. Due to the amount of time animal testing has been around, two general groups have formed in response to this. The people advocating for it are commonly part of the science community or anyone that supports what science hopes to accomplish and then there is the community of people who would not want animals to have to endure the pain from being tested throughout their entire lives. In this paper I will be presenting two perspectives on the topic regarding the use of animals in laboratories. The first perspective will show how animal testing is extremely beneficial to the world of scientific research as well as to the world in general. The type of things that the scientists test for includes: skin and eye irritation where the scientist rub chemicals onto their shaved skin or dripped in the eyes of the rabbits that are being tested (Humane Society International, 2016). Repeated forced feeding lasts from weeks to possibly months. They do this to test to show any sign of illness and or any specific health issues that may occur with products being tested. There is also another test that scientist’s do which is the lethal test, where animals are forced to swallow a large amount of test chemicals to see the amount they can take until they die. The test that scientists do causes pain, blindness swollen eyes, sore bleeding skin and also internal bleeding and damaged organs. What normally occurs after a scientific experiment they don’t try fix the issues they cause or try relieve the pain.

Animal testing is useless due to the fact that results are invalid which could lead to researches overseeing potential cures for diseases. Animal experiments can mislead researchers or even lead to illnesses or deaths by not predicting the toxic effects of drugs on the human body.

Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.

Humans are animals. In a behavioral and emotional aspect, these two species share the same characteristics. But, what makes humans differ from the rest of the animal kingdom is the ability to think critically, morally and act rationally. As time goes on, humans are becoming more intelligent than before. Because of their curiosity, during the ancient greeks humans began to conduct experiments on animals so that they can learn more about their body and other species. Even till nowadays, there’s scientific research that involves animals. However, are these research still necessary for the advancement of science for human beings? Should animal experimentation still be allowed in scientific studies? My stand on this debatable topic is no. Animal experimentation should not be allowed because it is inapplicable, inhumane, and there’s better alternative.
