As the skills of artists progressed during the Renaissance, so did the applications of their work. Artists began combining media to create wholistic themes within a space to evoke specific meanings to those who visited these spaces. This integration of architecture and other artistic media took many different forms all in an effort to capture the the array skills possessed by artist as well as the reputation and story behind those who commissioned the spaces. The Camera Picta which translates to ‘painted room’ in the Palazzo Ducale by Andrea Mantegna is one example of these wholistic spaces. The space was commissioned by Mantua’s ruling family the Gonzagas, specifically Ludovico Gonzaga. The dynasty had been a stable one since the 14th century and the family wanted to showcase their powerful reign to those who visited their palace. They asked their court artist Mantegna to completely cover the walls of the entertainment room with portraits of the family. Ludivico is shown with his wife and family members seated around him in perspective painting that gives an illusion depth of an extension of the space. This was done through the use of fictive architectural features of vaulting, curtains, and columns. The ceiling is also painting that included a ‘troupe l’oeil’ or ‘fool the eye’ painting of oculus in the ceiling.
