Understanding the telephone speaker’s vocabulary has become a survival skill in the twenty-first century. The best way to acquire the skill is by interactively modeling a real-life phone call using phrases such as, could you repeat that please, I need to confirm what you are saying, please hold, etc. It is also important to practice listening to the rhythm and intonation of a caller’s voice. The distortions in digital recordings make voicemail messages very difficult to understand. Fortunately, voicemail can be repeated numerous times until understood. Jose understands these difficulties. He is highly motivated to learn as he uses the phone in both his personal and professional life. Although both of Jose’s brothers speak English, he almost never speaks anything but Spanish outside of

It has helped me to be more mentally flexible and to think divergently, a skill that allows me to more easily abstract and conceptualize ideas. I also receive immense satisfaction from being able to speak directly to people from all walks of life in their own languages. To share the benefits I have gained from the exposure to languages with others, this summer, without any prior computer programming experience, I combined my passion for languages and technology by developing a smartphone application that teaches toddlers simple words and sentence structure in various languages. The application is intuitive enough for young children to effortlessly handle and has modes of use that imitate the way humans naturally learn to speak a language: through listening, repetition, and immediate feedback.

In eighth grade, when I chose to enroll in Spanish One, I had no idea that it would develop into a lifelong admiration for the language and culture. During my Sophomore year over Christmas, my family travelled to Valle De Bravo, Mexico. Unfortunately, I was unable to interact with anyone due to my limited Spanish knowledge, prompting me to study more rigorously the following school year. On our next visit, I returned to Mexico with an additional year of knowledge, eager to test my fluency. Whether it were a taxi driver, farmer, or vendor, I would attempt to carry on a conversation with anyone willing to talk. Even though I fumbled with words and struggled at times to understand, I was determined to improve my speaking skills. Through my discussions,

The moment I began English class and read the textbook On Course, I learned new information about myself to becoming a successful student and having a support system in my education. I began to think about why is communicating about my educational goals to individuals is important to me? How do my family play a significant role in my academics? However, there are many reasons communicating with my family is the most important to me.

Candelaria Lopez tried to learn English before, but it did not work. She could not always make it to class on time or at all, and even when she could, it was hard to find the energy to sit through a three-hour session after working for many hours on a farm in New York. After living in the United States for twenty years, she was still not comfortable holding a conversation in English as a Mexican immigrant. That changed after the state of New York offered a unique English language learning program for Spanish-speaking immigrants. Now, a whole new experience has opened for the 38-year-old mother of four. The program works through phone calls and text messages. It has provided her to take on added obligations at work, communicate with her daughter's teacher without a translator, and even help another Spanish-speaking family find an apartment to rent.
The last two decades has witnessed the rapid evolvement of mobile technologies. The penetration of portable devices (smartphones and tablets) and the expansion of potential learners has made the mobile assisted language learning (MALL) possible. As mentioned prior, students in middle school are going through significant changes. This means that there must be a clear path of communication between the parents/guardians and the educator. Parent-teacher conferences are a great way for parents to be involved in the learning environment. Through these conferences, parents can learn how their adolescent is performing in class. These conferences not only address academic progress, but also behavioral needs. It is common for students to act up for attention or to look cool in the middle grades. With parent-teacher conferences, the parent(s) can be made aware of any negative behaviors that need to be addressed. Another approach is a school newsletter, which I personally really like. Within the newsletter can be important upcoming dates, shout-outs, and relevant information. I really enjoy the idea of newsletters being sent home versus emailed. This is because I have students who do not have internet access at home. It is not fair for those students and parents to miss out if they do not have internet access. The communication line between parents/guardians and the educator is critical in the middle level. It is crucial for me to fulfill my role as an educator and communicating with the families. If I push this topic to the side, it is my student who suffers. It is not fair to my student to suffer if I do not perform my job the proper way.
