In the 1950’ and 1960’s, graduating high school students were able to earn a decent-paying job with benefits almost immediately. However, as time went on, the educational requirements to earn a stable job rose. Along with educational requirements rising, so did the cost of getting that education. Rising costs for education have made it almost impossible for many students to earn an education they want and need. The most promising solution to this problem seems to be making college free for everyone.

Nowadays, we are always bombarded with the constant studies that show the economic benefits of going to college. For example, one study suggests that the average earnings gap for a high school graduate and someone with a bachelor’s degree working full time is about $15,000 (Owen and Isabel 210). But, all these sources only focus on the economic benefits and they make it seem that the only way to succeed. However, they don’t mention as much the possible negatives and that it might not be for everyone. The biggest obstacle, especially for the lower class students is the high cost of tuition. Which has caused student loan debt to become the second highest form of debt in the U.S, surpassed only by mortgage debt (Owen and Sawhill 212). Even if the student figures that out then there’s the problem of finishing school. In today’s society, it is said that having a college degree will have long term benefits. However, for some people, they wonder if college is worth it. The reason why is because of the cost of attending college. Unlike public schools, going to college is not free. Being able to attend a four-year accredited college with scholarships is almost deemed a miracle. Being able to choose which school to fit in your price range is almost heart breaking. The cost of attendance will increase based on accreditation and location. You cannot pay for college with cash money alone. With the help of financial aid, students are given money based on their parent’s income. For some low poverty students, the hopes of getting financial aid is their way to college. For others, parents set aside a trust or college fund to give to their children. Another way students pay for college is through scholarships that they earn locally, through the state, or even on a national scale. However, when the scholarships run out, a student is forced to take out student loans, and the steps after taking the money are not told until after graduation. The student debt rate is overwhelming in this country. No one wants to talk about it because it is being swept under the rug.

A four-year degree has basically replaced the high school diploma as the necessary preparation for a career in this modern economy. Currently most noteworthy discussion is going on through our president Barack Obama to make first two year of college tuitions free.

The statistic of high school graduates enrolled in college reached a record high of 70.1 percent in 2009; however, this percentage descends each year (Norris). There has been many varying causes that have influenced the decline, but the number one reason seems to be the cost of higher education. Many people believe education should remain costly; in fact, the cost of college continues to rise. Although there are many college scholarship options, the price tag on a degree intimidates most students. If college tuition was eliminated, current and future generations would have better access to education. “Free college has succeeded in Germany, Brazil, Finland, Sweden, Slovenia, and Norway. Our nation's student loan debt has exceeded $1.2 trillion, a debt that well surpasses credit card and mortgage debt (“Why College Tuition”). Free college would, as a result, allow more students to continue their education through college and have a better chance for a successful future.

College education is a need for a structured life. Children and teens all through the United States are focusing on their grades and aiming for good grades. A persons potential and bright future can come to a halt after the 12th grade. Why? The answer is that paying for a college education is difficult and sometimes impossible. My proposal is that students should be able to receive free college tuition with a high school degree. College tuition should be payed for by the government which will cause students to stay encouraged and focused on their academics.

Education can be argued as the most valuable resource on earth. However, just like any service, it comes at a cost. The consequences of lack of opportunity in relation to monetary well being are substantial. As a solution to this problem, we propose a two year program that would provide students with a free college experience at the lower level. Therefore, by providing students with two free years of community college, they will have access to many more job opportunities, increased average income, and improved health.

Higher education is not crucial to one’s success. Quality higher education is crucial to one’s success. When we look at higher education costs’ today, we can see it is insane. Americans today owe over 1.45 Trillion dollars in student loan debts. $1,450,000,000,000 spread across 44 million students. That comes out to about $32,000 in debt per student. This grand total is actually hundreds of billions of dollars MORE than the whole US National Credit Card Debt. It is also over TWICE the amount of the whole federal military expense expense. This will be important to remember. However, the Student Loan Debt is not debatable about how serious a crisis it is. College is expensive. With such a serious topic at hand, there is no doubt people are trying to find a solution. One idea–make college free.
