Experience and Education Empowering To be empowered is to be more confident in, and more aware of oneself. To be empowered is to have a more complete understanding of what one must accomplish in order to live more fully. It is to grow in self-knowledge. It is to grow in self-awareness. It is to discover, to liberate, to emancipate, to better. To be empowered is a beautiful happening, however, empowerment is not simple. Empowerment comes when an individual understands their specific needs to better comprehend their self and the world they reside in. The key to empowerment is this specificity to the individual. Although it is unique to each person, in general, in order to be empowered, one has to not only be knowledgeable, but also experienced. Empowerment requires a balance of comprehension and wisdom. It requires a balance of book smarts and street smarts. Walt Whitman's "When I heard the Learn'd Astronomer" projects this idea exactly; to be empowered, both education and experience are necessary. The speaker of this poem is sitting in a lecture hall listening to a professor educate his students on astronomy. He uses basic, traditional academics, displaying charts and presenting diagrams. While listening to these lectures, "How soon unaccountable [he] became tired and sick" (Whitman). During the presentations the student is not experiencing anything, but simply being educated on it. This lack of balance of experience and education is preventing his empowerment. The man is

Psychological empowerment, according to Zimmerman (1995, p. 590), has three major components that “merge to form a picture of a person who believes that he or she has the capability to influence a given context [intrapersonal component], understands how the system works in that context [interactional component], and engages in behaviours to exert control in the context” [behavioural component], which exemplify development of consciousness.
Empowering an individual can contribute to empowerment of the whole group, or empowerment of the group can contribute to empowerment of the individual. Empowerment can give the individual a sense of control over their life. The article lists four changes that help individuals move from hopelessness to action; 1. Increasing self-efficacy, 2. Education throughout the world is viewed as a privilege. It’s a chance for individuals to expand their knowledge. It helps create a successful path for the social and economical structures of a society. Or at least, that's the idea. People like Horace Mann argue that education is ,“the great equalizer of the conditions of men,” making education sound essential and liberating.

Which brings me to today’s blog. What is motivation and empowerment? We hear every day about motivation and motivational speakers. When do we hear about empowerment? When are we motivated and how long does it last? The next question is when are we empowered? Is there a difference in how we feel or act when we are empowered? These seem to be a lot of questions.
• At the individual level employee empowerment means you are an integral component of the organization. This may sprout egotism or arrogance in the workers.
Both management and employees interpret empowerment from their own viewpoints to suit their own needs and build up expectations of what the programme will bring. For management, empowerment promises a more committed and involved workforce who are willing to take responsibility at lower levels. Whilst for employees, empowerment pledges autonomy and the ability to move to a more equitable position within their organization. The failure of these expectations to share similar intentions or goals means that the psychological contract between management and worker could fail, promoting feelings of is trust on both sides (Hill & Huq, 2004)
In relation to my organization, empowerment is vital to the success of our department. Due to cutbacks in our department, we have fewer employees to do the job. Spreading out the daily task was difficult with only six employees. Therefore, the answer to the problem was to make up two teams. Our director divided us into teams with a supervisor and she gave the teams the power to perform all of the tasks that where needed to run the department. Everyone 's ideas and skills were evaluated and put into action in one way or another. By having the entire department working together as two teams, we were able to complete the job with the power resting on the supervisors to get the job done.

It means that one strives to do their best at whatever they do and to put as much effort into it as possible. What am I capable of? How far can I push myself until I reach my goal? Doing homework nightly or whenever it is given and not turning in assignments late, will help me achieve this goal as it will get me better grades. This includes any nightly readings I have to do for the next class. Turning in something late, means I am lazy or slacking off a bit. Part of empowerment is to try not to be those things. Yes, there are times where I may forget or mess up with a due date of an assignment, but I will try my very best to not let that happen. I also plan on studying for quizzes and exams so that I can achieve the best possible grade there is. With empowerment, these little improvements on my work and studying habits, will help me reach my full
