In different cultures and civilizations around the world, education isn’t always mandatory. Some cultures even frown upon education deeming it useless. According to the “Time for School” documentary, some children in impoverished countries will go to extreme circumstances to obtain an education. Children who do not acquire an education in impoverished countries almost always stay in the same social class they are born into, leading to a life of poverty.
According to “Time for School”, younger women typically are much needed in their household during the daytime to keep up with their chores and to maintain their home. An example of this is shown in the documentary about a particular child named Joab. Joab is a young student who benefits from a special food donation program in his school. Joab typically receives food stables such as bread, vegetables, and other necessary food items. Soon after Joab receives this food, his father, whom he only sees after he receives the food donations, shows up and collects some of his child’s food. When asked how it makes him feel to only see his father when he shows up to take his food, Joab replies, “It makes me angry” (Time for School) with a glum look on his face. Since Joab is the leader of his household, he has to take care of his brother and sister. Even as a small child, Joab is given a huge responsibility. Along with taking care of his siblings, managing his household, going to school, Joab also looks for food to eat, as his father takes what little he is given. These huge responsibilities can take away from Joab’s education. When the demands of basic survival become too much, education is put on the back burner for Joab. Lack of education can cause much conflict in a person’s life. Rather it be finding a job, or finding spouse, anything anyone wants to achieve in life in an impoverished country will depend on their education level.
