The evolution of environmental sustainability started in the 20th century, the first problem recognized by the environmental managers was the air pollution which creates smog because of the automobiles and industries but that was not the only problem.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, environmental sustainability is “to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.” (“Learn About Sustainability”, 2016) Although this is an American agency, the definition fits what the European Union is trying to accomplish which is to meet the demands of the present without sacrificing those needs of future generations. By practicing environmental sustainability, one is preserving the environment for future generations to enjoy and use.

Americans became concerned about the environment in the latter part of the 20th century. Victory over Nazi-Germany was a result of industrialization; however it was detrimental for the environment. With industries booming, meant more pollution affecting natural resources. DDT was helping to save millions of lives from fatal disease, but there was minimal evidence as to how harmful this insecticide was for both humans and animals. Throughout the 1960’s new research was discovered as to the impacts destroying the environment. Activists as well as politicians began to incorporate the value of protecting the environment into mainstream events. The momentum for protection of the environment grew until, in 1970, President Richard Nixon established the EPA (EPA History, 2017). The EPA bases their sustainability efforts on the idea that, “everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. The Kuznets curve is firstly introduced in 1955 by Kuznets as an inverted-U relationship between income inequality and economic development. Later it is found that the Kuznets curve is useful for describing the relationship between environmental pressure and the economic growth or known as the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) (Dinda, 2004). The hypothesis of the EKC is that at early stages of a country’s development, the quality of its environment will be deteriorated faster and getting slow down at some level of income per capita that the economic growth support the increasing of environmental performance (Stern, 2004). The EKC applies differently between countries depend on the economic growth status of the country. The EKC of developing countries will show the upward slope stage of the curve because of the countries’ focus on economic growth and less protection to the environment.
