In my opinion, the values of Americans should be lived up to and in today's society that is not being done. Instead of judging people for their personality and who they are as a person we judge them by what they own and how much money they have. Gender inequality is primarily about the difference between the authority and positions that are offered to men and women. A study from 2014 shows that the gender pay gap is very well existing in all 50 states. “According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women make approximately 78 cents for every dollar a man makes.” (Huffington Post, 08/25/15) The difference in pay between women of color is even greater. African-American women only earn 64 cents for every dollar that a white man receives. Women that are Latino earn about 54 cents. Compared to their male counters, females only make 16 percent less money. A woman who works part or full-time only makes 84 percent of their male counterparts. Regardless of the gender both men and women should be paid equally for their jobs when they have the same qualifications. The United States was founded on freedom so we are technically supposed to have all terms of political equality. We do have political, social, and economic equality to an extent. Social equality for example, differs in states and with certain people. Things like race riots and killings of colors still happen today like recently in Ferguson. Our social equality has improved from the eighteen hundreds, but for for 2015 we could improve immensely. I do wish we had perfect social equality though, because I believe everyone should actually be treated equal no matter the race, age, or sexual orientation.
Gender equality is something that has been a problem through the ages. Susan B. Anthony and many others fought for the right to vote which was granted in 1920. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law stating that no employer can discriminate based on gender. The American Association of University Women published a graph on Women’s Median Annual Earnings as a Percentage of Men’s Median Annual Earnings for Full-time, Year-round Workers, 1974-2014 and it shows that in 1974, women were paid 59% of what men were paid. The graph shows the improvements over the years and that in 2014, women were paid 79% of what men were paid. The gap has not budged since 2014. The gender pay gap has improved over the years, but it will not close until new legislation passes.

Anthony said this over a hundred years ago, when the woman’s suffrage movement was just beginning in the United States. Even after all this time, the gender wage gap is a still hot topic in the United States today. Popular stars and politicians including Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lawrence, and Hillary Clinton all have something to say about it. There is even a section of thewhitehouse.gov dedicated to discussing the gender wage gap which is the comparison of women 's wages to men’s wages in the United States (“Equal Pay”). It is pretty common knowledge in the United States that women make 78 cents to a man’s dollar. However, it is not common knowledge that this is only comparing white women to white men (“The Simple Truth”). Women of color make even less than that, Latinas making the least, only 54 cents to a white man’s dollar. The Latina wage gap is largely ignored by the media because of the complicated politics of racial and gender based discrimination.
The gender pay gap has been an issue forever. Wage discrimination exists when workers are equally qualified and perform the same work but one group of workers is paid more than another. “The American Association University of Women is releasing a new study that shows when men and women attend the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns” (Coleman)1. The pay gap is even greater for African-American and Latina women. African-American women earning 64 cents and Latina women earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white non-Hispanic man. Women employees make less than men in the same job position. “It is an absolute scandal that American women continue to earn just $0.77 for every dollar men earn.” (Sen. Mikulski) There should not be a gender pay gap. Workers should be given salaries based on their work ethics, degrees, and academic credentials.
Today, the United States has less equality of opportunity than any other place. They have exposed the legend that America is a country where opportunities are unlimited. In the dictionary equal society is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization which aims at sensitizing and informing citizens for sexual equality, equal opportunities, and non-discrimination in all fields of social life. As for me, equal society is when society, as a whole, is able to put differences aside and be able to work together for a common goal that works to better ourselves as individuals and as a group. To this day, I still believe that equal rights is one of the biggest problems in the United States. People are constantly looking down on other for their gender, sex, race, sexual preference etc. This has been a problem since the beginning of time and I think that it needs to be stopped.
For Generations, we have sung the star spangled Banner. It's our national anthem of America within reasoning because we are the home of the brave and the land of the free. America is pretty brave in my opinion; the United States of America is punishing people of poverty and of color in our criminal justice system and ignoring age and background and enslaving our pour. We are brave because we are having slavery occur and disguising it as punishment. Are present Industries are profiting off prisoners. So, why are we guaranteed equal rights? Yes, you may be appointed a lawyer. Yet is it really fair to say we are going to equal rights if you are appointed a lawyer by the court because of our Bill of Rights states if you cannot afford an attorney

The United States of America has been around for 240 years. Learning about our government and the history of our country can better prepare us to ensure the liberties of our future generations. I will begin with past decisions in this country that have made sure equality in this nation is met. Then, I will go on to current events that question that equality. Lastly, I will describe ways in which we can secure these liberties for the future. Let’s first delve into the past.
Imagine living in a country without freedom, where if you were colored you were a slave. Or having to worry about if you were in constant danger. If I had to worry about these things all the time, I would be very stressed. I think that the United States is doing a good job at upholding the principles. I know for sure in Mason City that they are upholding all four principals. Principal one states that all people are created equal and two says all people have basic rights that can’t be taken away. Three reveals that the government gets its power to make decisions and protect the people. Four states when the government doesn't protect the rights of the people, the people have to right to alter or abolish the government.
As an American citizen we have many rights that are protected by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, along with laws that are enacted by each state and the federal government. A few of the rights that all American citizens have include the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to vote. The Equality Act also specifically provides each American citizen protection against discrimination based on qualities such as race, gender, age, and disabilities when applying for things such as employment, college, or housing. Furthermore, the Equality Act 2015 “Amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation in places of public accommodation” (U.S. Congress, 2015). These rights are provided to American citizens because we are all viewed as equal and deserve to have equal rights and opportunities non-dependent of our race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. One reason Sexism exists in modern society os the gender wage gap. The wage gap has been happening for a while now with men and women that have the same jobs but they get paid differently for example, ” women in the United States make 78 cents for every dollar a men's median weekly full-time earning is 82.5% [for blacks and Hispanics] and it does matter if a woman eventually makes it to a C-Suire office.” (Rogers,1). Women who have the same jobs that get pay less than here male coworker is not right that 78 cents mean a lot especially in money wise, women should be pay equal to her male coworker; this right here is Sexism and this needs to stop.
There are many issues regarding gender inequality in the U.S. One of the many examples is gender inequality in the workforce. Women are unequally treated in the workforce due sex segregation. One of the main issues in the workforce is hiring discrimination. Hiring discrimination in the U.S. is illegal under the Civil Rights Act that was passed in 1964 (Pg. 275 Sociology project 2.0), but the law has not totally ended discrimination. Many businesses have biased leaders. Is it fair to pay a woman less that performs the same duties as a man in the workplace? No. Does equality in the workplace have better results for our overall country’s economic performance? Yes. Reaching gender equality is essential for work relations and work performance due to fairness. We all perform more efficiently at work when we feel we are being treated fairly. Equality is attained when we all are put in a position to have access to the same opportunities and receive the same recognition within our work environment. The objective of this equality is to reach equal pay for the same jobs performed by men and women. It is a fact that more women register and graduate from college than men, but still, men with the same education level and experience as women are paid more and receive better opportunities. According to the Congressional Digest, “Gains have been made in some areas, research by GAO and others has shown that women's average pay has been, and remains, lower than that of men” (2014, p.1). Considering education levels, women with graduate degrees earn just 69.1% of what men with graduate degrees earn, and those with bachelor degrees earn 71.4 % of men’s salaries. These facts inform us that women have to reach for more educational qualifications just to attain the same job pay as men.
