Have you ever watched a commercial and thought it was full of complete lies? In today's advertising world, most commercials are misleading and full of fallacy. The goal of the advertiser isn’t to be ethical, but to sell the product they are advertising. Some commercials will go great lengths to make sure the viewers are interested in their product. Almost all of today’s advertisements are edited, and tend to have high production values. Advertisements also play a huge role in society by showing the public what is new, and what the next big thing is. The 2017 Toyota Mirai Super Bowl commercial contains multiple cases of fallacy, such as emotional appeal, either/or reasoning, and oversimplification, and uses such to manipulate viewers into buying their product. This strategy is unethical and is targeted at the strivers and the experiencers, as described in “What We Are to Advertisers” by James B. Twitchell. The commercial starts with a lone daisy growing between a crack in the asphalt. Slow, dramatic piano music starts to play. The camera starts to pan in towards the lone daisy, just as a car rushes past, and stops momentarily with its muffler pointed directly at it. Quickly, the car takes off, leaving the lone daisy in a thick, black cloud of exhaust. Violins play a dramatic flare as the daisy slowly shrivels up and wilts.
