Before taking this course, I was curious about the movement of cultural aspects throughout the world. Globalization is more complex than just the spreading of culture but is the idea of global evolution and growth in a positive direction while highlighting and addressing global issues. Globalization is often defined as the expansion of interactions of people through the flow of ideas, culture, and wealth. Globalization influences global, regional, and national policy as well as democracy, education, and human rights. The world as a whole has developed drastically with innovations and technologies but has also limited and kept societies from advancing. This movement helped to end child labor in America. This also helped immigrants Americanize and integrate into western culture and taught what being a successful member of the society looks like. It is now a globally recognized norm that all children receive primary schooling and basic life skills. Primary schooling is education to the 6th grade and secondary is schooling from 7th to 12th grade. Globalization and education are relevant to me because I want to become an educator myself. In western culture, we are so used to schooling being involuntary and we lack realization that half of the children in the world do not receive an education past 6th grade. There are disparities within global education which include gender, regional, and wealth that effect which children are educated and which are not. Boys in urban areas with higher family incomes are more likely to be in school but the gender gap is closing. Education not only increases GDP and economic growth but has created a new stage in life known as adolescence. This pre-adult stage which is prolonged with the help of education benefits societies and has helped reduce fertility and marriage rates among children. Adolescence is vital in western society for personal growth, identity experimentation, and transition into adulthood.
