1. Introduction
More and more group works have been found in the nowadays world. Group work has been shown effective in productivity and satisfaction at workplace (Katzell & Guzzo, 1983). Meanwhile, group works are also found in higher education, many courses are assessed by workshop, group presentation and final group project. Due to the collective power, students are more active to learn in a group than study individually (Ruel and Bastiaans, 2003). Taking the part-time MBA course as the example for illustration, here we will evaluate the usefulness of group work as a pedagogical tool. The MBA students are in pursuit of attaining academic standard, acquiring advance knowledge in their careers and managing work-study balance within a destined period of time, group work ought to be a useful tool to achieve these goals. Group dynamics are impactful in academic aspects and also managerial skills are developed all along. However, some potential problems like free-rider and domination could be created while the groups operate, so that the strategies to minimise problems and their potential effects will also be discussed.
2. Academic benefits
The activities of a group are in two dimensions: task and process (Gaston, 2015). A group is formed to complete a task together, which is a clear objective for the group members. During the MBA programme, students are divided in groups and they are functioning in accomplishing assignments, workshop presentations and course material
I believe our group work is going well. We haven’t had many meetings concerning bringing all the work together, but people have been working had individually as noted in the annotated bibliography. One complaint is that in the agreement we said that the annotated bibliography would be completed by the Sunday before the due date, when in actuality two members did not add their work to the group until the day the assignment was due. However, this is minor in the larger scheme since it was completed and submitted on time. We have made plans to come together next week to work on the project together and how and where everyone’s contribution will be placed. Overall I don’t have much to complain about as communication and work ethic are good. I
As I sit here to this day group work is still not my favorite thing it makes me angry when professors mention it. I feel as if we are now in college not in high school. We should be treated as one person when doing an assignment. So you could see each potential of each
The push for group work is founded on the goal of preparing students for their adult
Learning how to work effectively in a group situation is key to success in many professions as well as in social situations. Groups vary from each other based on the individuals that make up each group, all of us belong to various groups at one time or another. The roles that we fulfill vary from group to
What expectations/goals do you have for your use of this strategy? After we have a couple of opportunities to use this task I would like for the student’s to give meaningful I wonder….. I think…… comments.
Everyone remembers the times in middle school when their teachers would force them to work in groups of people they may or may not have liked. They would cause fights among the students in the groups, bring grades down, and take more time and effort. All reasons I do not agree with group work, and am against it.
Group work has been a cornerstone of the social work profession and requires a variety of facilitator skills and awareness of group processes. The SSLDTM Group Program for People with Difficulties in Social Situations (Socialwork1914, 2017) provides an excellent example of a psycho-educational group co-facilitated by two female social workers, Jane and Karen. After viewing the 6th session of this 8-week program, I began to understand how the concepts of group formation/development, interpersonal dynamics, and leadership styles contribute to successful group work outcomes.
“Group work is a teaching strategy that promotes academic achievement and socialization”(Frykedal, Chiriac, 2011). This method is often used since allow individuals to combine their skills with the intention to achieve a mutual goal. To be efficient when working with a group, individuals have the responsibility to understand and respect others preferences and
Our collaborative group project was frightening when I first realized this was part of the course. I had not completed a group academic project in years as I have been an online degree-seeking student. I wavered between being confident my fellow team members would be fantastic as we are all in the same degree program and worried we would have some conflict. Marks and O’Connor researched undergraduate business students regarding collaborative learning that states precisely the concerns rolling through my mind.
In many undergraduate courses students engage in different kinds of group projects. One of the advantages of the group project as opposed to an individual one is that it gives an opportunity for students to work as a team for a period of time. When students conduct group projects, they usually allocate the tasks among the members. Whether the students work with partners or in a group co-operation is very important. This is one of the aims in undergraduate projects since in the real world people often work in teams to achieve common goals. The group members have to accommodate their own interest with that of the other members of the group, and compromise and negotiation skills are needed for smooth and effective group functioning. Us students have to externalize our thinking and communicate with group members effectively.
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” (Hellen Keller) “Two heads are better than one.” (John Heywood) “ More hands make for lighter work.” (John Heywood) These adages speak to the potential groups who have to be more productive, motivated and creative than individuals on their own. Should high school classes require group work? Group work can help students develop a host of skills that are increasingly important in the professional world. Working in groups creates a share of diverse perspectives, develops a stronger communication skill and helps tackle more complex problems than one could do on their own.
The eyes being the windows to the soul, the Lord must have felt pity for me and gave me the blessing of glasses. The best vantage point in a class room is the back right corner, giving view of everyone in the room. Evaluating everyone to see what information they give away about themselves, so as to better align myself if group work does come into play. Within the first couple of minutes it easy to tell that this group ranges in a lot of type A and B personas, all more or less good assets to be used to get an A. I hear her before I see her, already that laugh has my heartrate at a dangerous high level, has it really been three years already!! With my persona, it’s only natural I gravitate to the Romantic Era. Whether it’s the ever-lasting struggle I face with passion over reason, the romantic era imagination and supernatural, which are either my favorite show or novels to entertain myself with, to the Eras
Teamwork can be complex and challenging given task and interpersonal issues, level of group motivation and expected performance standards. The concrete experience spoken about in this reflection piece is in reference to the effectiveness of myself as a group member and the group, working to write a report outlining the organisation and structure of Volkswagen. Dennison (2009) applies Kolb’s learning cycle (1981, 1984) which suggests that learning moves through a continuous cycle, between having an experience, and then reflecting on that action. This cycle has been developed from Lewin’s (1951) model for experiential learning. Reflection termed by Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) ‘is a forum of response to the learner to experience’(p. 18). On reflection, the early set group dynamics was a defining factor in the experience, and how the team conducted themselves throughout the task. Meyerson, Wick and Kramer (1996) note that ‘such rapidly converging groups require methods for developing “swift trust”’ (p. 8), which can explain why initial group dynamics are so important. I took on multiple team roles, including group leader, which could be translated into the team not performing collectively on a high level, however, I could view this as a personal ineffectiveness of my leadership style.
“Group work is a form of voluntary association of members benefiting from cooperative learning that enhances the total output of the activity than when done individually”.
I am Zeeshan Ali; I am working as a Computer teacher for Classes VI-X-M in Canal Side Boys Campus. I have done Masters in Computer Science (MCS) from Punjab University College of Information and Technology (PUCIT) Lahore. The students are the main focus of every teacher and our entire teaching efforts circle round our students to achieve the set targets. Effective Teaching includes many useful teaching strategies that a teacher chooses according to the requirement of his/her respective subject and topic as well. In result of my years of experience and as a Computer teacher I find Group Work as the most effective and fruitful technique at every level.
