"The goal of health education is to promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health through the educational process” (Allegrante, 1986). Health literacy requires knowledge from many topics, comprising the patient’s own body, appropriate conducts towards healthy results and the difficulties to understand the health system. It is influenced by many conditions such as our communication skills, age, socio-economic status, and cultural background, past experiences, educational level and mental health status (U.S. Department of

This objective allows learners to know that they will be given tools to assess a patient’s health literacy as well as tools to create individual education plans specific to each patient’s need. The second objective states that staff will be able to assess a patient's learning style and incorporate those kinds of activities in their teaching of each patient. This learning objective sets the learner up for receiving instruction on how to assess a patient’s learning style and how to apply that knowledge to how to teach their patient. These objectives give the staff the tools to properly and adequately teach patients in a way that they can understand and apply what they have learned without fear of

Health literacy affects everyone. In life, everyone wants to take care of their health and stay healthy. Health literacy is a very important skill needed by everyone to be able to find, understand and use health care information. The second article focuses on the way the educator presents themselves. The way individuals present themselves is very important in the health profession. The third article, explains how health educators have to be aware of what they are teaching, and they have to follow up with their work. The fourth article focuses on, how the health educators should be aware of the population they are working with. Nurses take on educator roles both in educating the public on their health and as educators in clinical practice and academic settings. As a public educator, nurses teach and counsel patients and families to enhance health and well-being. Patient and family health education is an important step in preventing disease. In order to be able to properly educate their clients on health promotion and well-being, nurses must first fully understand “health”. Nurses do not view health as “the absence of illness” but “define health as the extent to which an individual or group is able to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs and to change or cope with the environment in which they live.” (CARNA, 2005, p.2). Nurses hold a holistic view of the person and health and address health within the context of a person’s wholeness, including biological, emotional, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions. Incorporating these ideas, nurses use the determinants of health as a way of dealing with and achieving health for an individual. Nurses recognize the broad determinants of health as income & social status, education, culture, physical environments, gender, health services, social support networks, employment & working conditions, health services, personal health practices, and biology & genetic endowment.
Health literacy is defined as "The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (Michael K. Paasche-Orlow, 2010), the word Health literacy first appeared in 1974 in a paper which calls for “education standards for all grade school levels in USA” (Carolyn Speros, 2004) . Some recent works suggest that there is a relation between literacy, low health and premature deaths (Christina Zarcadoolas et al, 2005).
Healthy People 2010 define health literacy as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health care related decisions.” These are the skills that people need to find the right place in the hospital, fill out insurance forms, and communicate appropriately with

Health promotion is a method use to spread awareness of the importance of health. Health is man perceiving oneself at his or her optimal level of functioning. Health can be achieved even in a diseased state by assisting clients to achieve the highest perceived state of health as possible. Health is a direct result of environmental factors and health teaching and promotion. It is important to incorporate the teaching process and recognize the different domains of learning in order to achieve the most effective, positive behavioral changes. Since man is in constant interaction with his environment, and each client has different beliefs, cultures and values, health promotion and teaching are important for man to achieve his or her optimal level of functioning. This is
