Perseverance is a recurring theme in my personal and professional lives. This steadfastness through difficult circumstances inculcated me with the drive, ambition, resilience, resourcefulness and mental vigor to succeed in the masters of legal studies program and the ricocheted effect of career enhancement in my lifelong profession as a communications specialist. Raised by a single parent mother and the oldest of five siblings between my long estranged parents, I witnessed her daily tears and varied struggles to provide basic food, make a comfortable home out of our cramped one bedroom dwelling, to as much as alternating when each child attended school. I was given preference because I exhibited the most potential and eventually earned rallying support from teachers throughout elementary and secondary schools. They pooled personal resources to help sustain my education, filling the gaps providing books, lunch and transportation whenever my mother fell short. Symbolically, I believe that it was my mother's tears that propelled me to complete my high school education miraculously affording me a substantive platform from which to further myself. The circumstances and culture which defined my very humble beginnings meant that getting an education was not just an option but a critical necessity for me. A solid educational foundation was my only way out of poverty and, so, I aptly developed a tenacious zeal to succeed. I learned from very early to problem-solve
How many times in life have you struggled but got through a difficult time? That is called perseverance. The definition of perseverance is “Steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” Synonyms are persistence and determination. It originated from the latin word perseverare. Right now the world has been filled with natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires. Everyone that this affected has been forced to persevere through it because there is not much that they have the ability to do besides staying strong. In all of the nonfiction literature we have read there were many different examples of perseverance from many different people. I decided to choose three. For my first example Melba Pattillo Beals from “Warriors Don’t Cry”. There is numerous examples of the Little Rock 9 and her doing something despite difficulty. For the second example of perseverance I chose Maya Angelou. Through her life there were countless times that she was faced adversity and still achieved success. My third example is Earl Simmons (DMX) from the book “E.A.R.L”. He went through a tough time at almost all time growing up and he never gave up and achieved success. Perseverance creates success; therefore, when you stick through something you can accomplish what you want.
I believe that when you persevere you can accomplish countless things. When someone says perseverance, I believe that people automatically think about working hard and getting rewards after. While working hard is a big part in it, there is more to it. I am going to share a couple of stories that will hopefully change your mind about perseverance.
Despite playing the role of protector, there was no role that I enjoyed more than being able to help my siblings further their education, ensuring that their homework and mine was completed, accurate and ready for my mother’s review upon her return home from work. I was determined to transfer my passion for learning, and education in general, to my siblings and anyone in my household who would listen, which might have contributed to the fact that all but one of my siblings went on to attend and graduate from college. For me, getting an education wasn’t an option, it was the only option, a sentiment that I relentlessly stressed to my siblings, and my mother, who though a high school dropout at one point, went on to pursue and receive several college degrees later in life. At the age of 12, I took on my first job, which was essentially an entrepreneurial endeavor. My brothers and I spent the spring, summer and fall canvassing our neighborhood, seeking out residents who would allow us to mow their lawns or rake their leaves in exchange for a reasonable fee. While the earnings of that first job were meager, the intangible benefits and life lessons that I derived from it were tremendous. I learned a lot about earning and managing money, responsibility, and most significantly, what I did not want do with my life. The
His perseverance through the hard time has helped me understand that even when someone faces tough time they do not have to roll over and take it they can fight to get better. Homer’s The Odyssey, an epic poem about the trials of Odysseus on his return journey, demonstrates that perseverance is at the heart of every hero. The ability to endure hardships is not a quality that is attributed to many characters, and in The Odyssey, a character’s lack of perseverance will bring him his demise. Similar to Odysseus, Penelope, his wife, perseveres by staying faithful and unmarried for twenty years, while waiting for his return. Through The Odyssey, Homer suggests that those who are loyal to and homesick for their homeland are willing to persevere for their homecoming, and thereby they complete the journey that proves them a hero.
Perseverance is a mandatory quality to possess. As a matter of fact, perseverance is a blend of spirit and determination. This skill instills motivation and drive into the hearts of others. One does not require special talents or great knowledge to be a vessel in which this quality can be observed. In her essay, First Job, Illiana Roman illustrates a life filled with hard work and perseverance through anecdotes, word choice, and sentence structure.
Many people suffer problems in the world today. This includes terrorism and tyranny. It includes kidnapping and hate crime. It can also be cancer and starvation. Many have lived through problems like these and told the tale because they persevered. Through Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, Wiesel’s Night, and Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, perseverance is emphasized the readers by writing about characters, whether they are survivors of the Holocaust, a prisoner of war, or family, that have to suffer obstacles that can potentially kill them if they don’t overcome it. Even though each author has a different way to show perseverance, they all agree on what perseverance can do. Persevering through unfortunate situations
After living in three different foster care homes in the middle of South Dallas, I was adopted into a low income household. My adopted parents drilled in me the importance of having a college degree, father a middle school drop-out and mother just a high school graduate. I became the first-generation college graduate in 2014, just to show my siblings that your background does not predict the level of education you can receive. My mother taught me that repetitive style of learning in a simplified form was best in my early ages of school. Growing up with a learning disability, I was behind other students that was five years old; since I did not start talking until I was five. My parents were patience with me when it came to my education, making
The event call to action in my story is going to be showing a day when I’m at work and I’m talking with a client and they are telling me about how there son graduated and what he has done with his life. And Ill continue to talk about how I finally made the decision to go to Full Sail.
My close friend Ashwin Mohan had once told me his perspective on perseverance and I was curious to know how it has helped or hindered him throughout his life. His response would be different from that of my previous interviewee in my reflection essay, Kenny Varghese. Ashwin had told me that he viewed perseverance as a means to an end. As it was very catchy to hear, Ashwin would explain his phrase, saying how there are two successful people, one that is handed everything and doesn’t worry while on the other hand the second works hard and persevered through hardships to become successful. Ashwin then asked, “Who would be more successful?” I replied with the obvious answer, “The person that persevered.” He nodded in agreement pointing out how
Attaining an education, or simply learning, has always been a rather important component of my life. From an early age, I was captivated by the idea of knowledge; of discovering things I did not know existed; it slowly became my dream to learn as much as I possibly could. As I got older I also realized that a good education had a significantly high correlation with opportunities in respectable careers. I also began to understand that in addition to my hopes and dreams of getting an education, my parents also shared the same hopes and dreams for myself along with the hope that I would be able to establish a career for myself. It was truly evident as I continued to grow, with the guidance of my parents that I wished to dedicate my life to learning and to invest in an education.

As I trudged bleakly through the double doors, slowly sitting down in my seat, and listened as the cushion deflated underneath me, I wondered whether I could just go back to my dorm and sleep. Thoughts ran through my light-headed brain, all I could really think about had to do with tissues, and lots of water to mask my hideous cough. I hated being sick, especially during school. Nevertheless, I still went to every one of my classes, even if I felt horrible. I always told myself during times when I felt like giving up, just one more hour, just one more day. Just like me, thousands of people went through similar situations, but the way they respond to them showed their own personal perspectives.
