Physical fitness, defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as good health and strength achieved through exercise, gives students nationwide a goal to work towards. High school sports, particularly football and basketball, are very popular in the United States of America as a way for students to stay in shape and compete during their teenage years. While 975,808 students nationwide participated in basketball in 2016, football showed itself to be the most popular sport in the country, being played by 1,085,272 students across the United States. Different techniques are employed in order to get student athletes into shape for different sports. Because basketball consists of more constant running, often times the conditioning just consists of running; however, since football requires athletes to apply more full body strength during the play, football conditioning often entails a more entire body workout. Athletes must engage in push ups and other complete body exercises in addition to the cardio work that they are expected to complete. Even though basketball players may run more than football players, they do not have the full body workouts that football players do. Since strength can directly be found as a central part of the definition of physical fitness, weight training contributes greatly to the aforementioned subject. As an integral component of the culture of high school football, lifting shows up more for the gridiron programs while the hardwood clubs don’t always
