Health and Physical Education is a mandatory learning area in the school curriculum which provides opportunities for all students to live healthy and active lifestyles. Schools are recognised as primary settings for developing health-related knowledge and skills. Health and physical education supports students to enhance their own and others’ health. HPE is a learning area of Australian curriculum through which students can make healthier choices. It focuses explicitly on developing movement skills and encourage students to participate in range of physical activities. Therefore, Health and Physical Education is a vital learning area in the school curriculum.
Health and Physical Education provides learning opportunities for students to make meaning of and apply the knowledge and skills related to health and movement. They learn movement skills through physical education. These skills enable them to develop personal, interpersonal, behavioural, cognitive and social skills. Movement skills also encourage students for ongoing participation across their lifespan which leads to positive health outcomes (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2012). According to UNESCO (1999), learning to move and enjoying the freedom of movement is a human right (as cited in ACARA, 2012). The current education system can be described as a structured blueprint with the overall aims of shaping a child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development and behaviour. Learning is the core focus of schooling, where classrooms are expected to be a place learners develop and acquire skills, habits and knowledge on a regular basis (Demirel, 1993). Within the curriculum, Physical Education (PE) is acknowledged as a unique module in which individual’s acquire physical, social and mental skills through physical activity (Lumpkin, 1998). There has been an increasing number of research surrounding different teaching styles within the education system, and which is more effective in enhancing learning. Jaakkola & Watt (2011), argued that teachers should have the ability and skillset to adapt their teaching styles to suit the learning needs of their students. This was also supported by Kulina and Cothran (2003), who suggested that an effective approach to pedagogical practice is to use a number of different teaching styles.
The goal of this topic of “What is education in Physical education” is to try and explain what physical educators are actually teaching students. For this project, we are focusing on cognitive and affective learning styles within physical education. The article Kyla looked at was “The Importance of the Affective Domain in the Education of Physical Educators.” The purpose of her article was to look at the importance of affective goals and objectives related to the training of future physical educators (Woodford, 1979). The affective domain looks at attitudes, feelings, interests and values of the learned. It is best viewed as the way a person feels rather then how they think (Woodford, 1979). The goal for physical educators should be to cover all areas of learning, which helps adjust a person’s value of physical education (Woodford, 1979).
This paper will be discussing the importance of the health and physical education (HPE) in primary schools and the historical and the historical contemporary challenges that have ensued. Whilst there are numerous contemporary perspectives on the importance of HPE education and challenges in the area, due to the scope of the paper, three topics for each will be discussed. After outlining a historical background, this paper will discuss the importance of the learning area in relation to physical literacy, health literacy and social and emotional development and the challenges of a crowded curriculum, narrow sexuality education and the outsourcing of HPE.
My philosophy as a health and physical educator is to make a difference in the young minds of the world. My target goal is to prepare students to make healthy lifestyles choices as well as practice them on a daily basis. Routine physical activity results in higher achievement in the classroom, more energy to make it through the day, promotes healthy eating habits, and reduces risk of disease. These things are important attributes that make physical education a well needed course in every school’s curriculum.

The 1980’s brought us Jane Fonda, Jazzersize, and other forms of dance aerobics; while Billy Blanks had us punching and kicking our way to health with Tae-Bo in the 1990’s. The new millennium gave birth to Insanity, P90X, Zumba, and the whole Beach Body franchise. The Army still clings to the idea that running, push-ups and sit-ups are the only way to measure physical fitness; while Cross-Fit fanatics prefer to lift hard and heavy. There is so many ways to train, so many fads to wade through in the search for a technique that works. The conflicting research and opinions when it comes to physical training and overall health is confusing at best. Mostly, the overwhelming amount of information, techniques, programs, workouts, self-proclaimed YouTube experts, and google search results leave the average American not knowing where to start or what kind of training would move them towards their goals. One of the most ardently debated fitness topics is which form of cardiovascular training is most effective for weight loss; steady state cardio or high intensity interval training. As a Drill Sergeant, there is always limited time to physically train; an issue most soldiers have, particularly those in combat zones. Physical Education programs in publics schools has long been a source of disappointment and stagnant development. As the average rate of an urban youth continues to rise, little is being done within the school setting to meet the growing need for active involvement. School system leaders overlooks physical health due to the need to cut spending and increase test scores, all the while losing sight that school is the place where youth spend most of their time and gain most of their development. Oppositions to providing physical education programs include school districts have the autonomy to decide what standards to follow and funding priorities are needed elsewhere. To facilitate change in the lack of physical education in schools, the school districts in the state of Kansas must comply with the state standards for physical education. To accomplish this, the state should specify standards more clearly, provide more funding to physical education, and support with more education regarding the benefits of this change to the school districts.

Behaviorists believe that positive or negative reinforcement shapes behavior. This positive or negative determines whether the behavior will happen again.
