Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that offers reproductive health care to millions in the United States. It provides high-quality and affordable care. However, it has recently been under attack by the Trump administration. The Trump administration is trying to get Planned Parenthood defunded. I believe the federal government should continue to fund Planned Parenthood because it provides essential health care services in addition to abortions and is extremely important to the health of many women, men, and young people.
For over 100 years, Planned Parenthood has been providing people with reproductive health care. On October 16, 1916, three women open the first clinic in the U.S. to offer birth control. Margaret Sanger, her sister Ethel Byrne, and Fania Mindell were the originators of this first clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Some of the things they did were provide advice, give information on birth control, and also distribute it. In a short period of time the clinic got shut down, while the three women were arrested and charged with crime.
Now, Planned Parenthood has grown into one of the largest leading providers of health care and sex education in the Unites States. There are more than 600 health centers across the nation. Each year, over 2.5 million women and men visit Planned Parenthood for information and health care services. Planned Parenthood clinics provide services regarding pregnancy, birth control, sexual education, STI screenings and treatments,
Planned Parenthood is a controversial topic sweeping the nation of America with political and moral issues. Every day one could come across a new article on it, stubble upon a news article in their local paper or even on their local news station. Planned Parenthood directly provides reproductive health services, is involved in teach young students about sexual education, contributes to research in reproductive technology, and interacts with legal and political efforts aimed at protecting and developing reproductive rights.
Planned Parenthood is a widely known nonprofit organization. They are the health care provider for millions of people within our nation. When people hear the words Planned Parenthood they automatically assume abortion. Yes, abortion is a service that they offer yet, they deliver much more than that. They deliver and educate us about birth control, cancer, men and women’s sexual health, pregnancy, sexual orientation and offer the Morning-After Pill (emergency contraception) and sexually transmitted disease screenings. Planned Parenthood is a large organization. “Planned Parenthood consists of 159 medical and non-medical affiliates, which operate over 650 health clinics in the United States. It partners with organizations in 12 countries
In overview, Planned Parenthood is an underappreciated healthcare resource that has helped terminate/prevent unwanted pregnancy, contributed to vital medical research, and educated persons of all ages in matters including sexuality and safe practices/choices.
Planned parenthood has been a topic of controversy the last couple of years, as people throughout the nation ask whether or not the healthcare organization should be defunded. When video footage was released in 2015 of “Planned Parenthood medical officials discussing the sale of fetal tissue to researchers,” it seemed likely that federal funds would be revoked as backlash from the public was noted (Welch). Although the nonprofit organization does offer the termination of unplanned pregnancies, the organization offers many more services to women and men, such as free birth control and yearly health checkups “backed by medical experts and more than 100 years of research in reproductive health” (Planned Parenthood). As many people struggle financially to provide for their families, Planned Parenthood’s services are a relief to those who otherwise would not be able to afford healthcare, which is why the organization should not be defunded.
Over the last one hundred years the program known as planned parenthood has selflessly devoting millions of dollars and countless hours. To providing health care that is not only safe but also affordable. (Lawrence and Ness) The comprehensive health care that planned parenthood provides is, in my opinion extremely beneficial to every single man and woman that has ever happened to be a patient of planned parenthood. Planned parenthood provides an extraordinary amount of benefits that have helped millions of people all around the world. Benefits such as free testing for sexually transmitted. Access to the full range of reproductive and preventive health services for woman and men both. Examinations, vaccinations, and abortion as well as many more. According to the author of Defunding Planned Parenthood Defined “Extreme politicians, led by Vice President Mike Pence and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, want to shut down Planned Parenthood”. If so many benefits are being provided by planned parenthood why is government funding for the program being taken away? Excluding their personal feelings towards abortion. I personally cannot think of any logical conclusion that would lead vice president Mike Pence and human services secretary Tom Price to think shutting down planned parenthood is a good idea by any stretch of the imagination. The services provided by planned parenthood are much too valuable to simply disappear for millions of people. If these services where to
"Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest provider of sexual and reproductive healthcare, providing birth control, pap smears, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and pregnancy tests to 5 million people each year. It has an annual budget of $800 million, 860 clinics, at least one representative in each state and enough members and staff that its reach into the grassroots is unmatched by any other entity fighting for reproductive freedom and women's equality" (Conniff, 2012).
There is clearly huge controversy and strong opinions surrounding Planned Parenthood, but those who are against it do not truly know what they are fighting against. Only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood services are abortion, so what happens with the other 97 percent? Planned Parenthood offers basic wellness check-ups, birth control, STD and STI testing, and cancer screenings. “...the heart of what Planned Parenthood does has nothing to do with abortion” (Nixon). All of these services can be life changing and life saving. It’s easier to go to a clinic like Planned Parenthood vs a traditional doctor because patients can walk right in. Plus there are services offered at Planned Parenthood that are not offered at other health centers. General practice clinics are not equipped for STD screenings or family planning services like Planned Parenthood clinics are (Zernike). So many people are caught up in their feelings about abortion that they will not acknowledge how beneficial Planned Parenthood is for myriads of people.
Planned Parenthood should not be defunded because more than 2 million people would be without basic healthcare ("What It Really Means to "Defund" Planned Parenthood."). Although skeptics have the concern that Planned Parenthood is just an abortion clinic, they provide far more, including, family planning, contraceptives, STI testing, cancer screenings, and many other basic health services for women, men and youth, especially those below the poverty line.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that is critical for both men and women’s health care. Right now there are people trying to defund Planned Parenthood, and that would leave countless men and women without an excellent source of health care. Planned Parenthood provides a level of care that surpasses many other health care centers, and would be a devastating loss if defunded. Another thing that Planned Parenthood does is advocate for women rights, by doing so they provide abortions, but that should not be what defines the services of Planned Parenthood. They provide so much more than that, Planned Parenthood offers a wide range of tests and treatments, as well having someone there for anyone to talk to. Planned Parenthood should not be
Planned Parenthood is the most trusted reproductive healthcare provider in the United States, with skilled professionals dedicated to offering everyone affordable high quality medical care. One out five American Women choose Planned parenthood at
Millions of taxpayer dollars are going to fund Planned Parenthood. Along with the Obamacare introduction, Planned Parenthood has become a secondary cost to make sure women have health care throughout the United States. Along with the wasted money being spent, Planned Parenthood has other issues. The high cost of administration and the sale of fetus tissue and organs have become the latest in an agency out of control. Because of the wasteful administration of funds and ethical questions about disposing of fetuses, Planned Parenthood should no longer be funded by the Federal government.
Planned Parenthood helps people who do not have access to family planning care anywhere else.
According to Bryce Covert and Mike Konczal’s article, “Born, Not Free,” the government funds constitute about $500 million of the $1.1 billion total Planned Parenthood receives in funding. However, the money coming from the government cannot legally be used towards the administration of abortion, which is the main topic of controversy. Politicians who are in favor of defunding argue that by giving money to the facility whose services are in part constituted by abortion, those funds are essentially being given in support of abortions. On the contrary, though Planned Parenthood has come to be known as a symbol for abortion, abortion constitutes only 3% of the services provided. According to Nancy Gibbs, a managing editor for TIME magazine, the other 97% is made up of “family planning, immunizations and screening for cancer and sexually transmitted diseases” (Gibbs). Due to the funding from the government, Planned Parenthood is able to provide the aforementioned inexpensive yet crucial services to women. $500 million dollars is a small price to pay to ensure the health and wellbeing of half of the population of the United States of America. Also, even though abortion is only a small part Planned Parenthood, a woman is able to have the procedure done safely and without further damage to her physical welfare. To conclude, Planned Parenthood is able to vastly improve women’s overall health through its facilities, like cancer screenings and family planning. However,
The planned parenthood and parent crisis centre are America's health care options for everyone, however many people are weary of planned parenthood due to the fact they offer abortion to women who may not be able to have the child due to medical reasons or they can not care for it. People focus on the fact that planned parenthood offers abortion and because of that think it should be de-fund, this health programs provides people who can not give birth or don’t choose to.
Planned Parenthood provides health care for a distinctively less amount of money, and it offers help to those, who can’t afford it other wise. It educates and advises people, provides counselling and help. That is absolutely true, but there are some other facts that I would want you to take into consideration.
