Basketball is my passion and it makes me happy that I decided to continue playing. However, there was a time when I was thinking about not playing again due to an awful experience I had while playing basketball my senior year of high school. I have soon come to realize that not all coaches are the same, for example, my high school basketball coach is very different to my college basketball coach, especially when it comes to their coaching styles and attitudes towards their players and coaching staff.
It is easily said that playing basketball my senior year of high school was my least favorite season. The season was my least favorite, not because of my teammates, but due to the head coach. He only designed plays to showcase our point guard, who is the person that calls the plays that we run on the court. He also had the coaching style where things were either his way or you did not play. For instance, if someone, other than our point guard, were to receive a pass and was wide open for a shot, he would yell at them because they were not meant to shoot the ball in that play. However, in the other coaches and players eyes it would seem pointless for them to not take the chance and shoot the ball, especially if they are wide open. One could make the assumption that he was focused more on the guards than on the group as a whole, but my college coach is nothing like that.
I may have only been playing ball in college for one month, but I can say with great confidence that
When a coach focuses on favorites instead of the good of the entire team, it really will set a bad vibe through the gym. I never kissed butt to get where I wanted to be. My parents did not pay loads of money for me to play on clubs so they could pay for my playing time. I came to work, but that was never good enough. I was working in overdrive to get my playing time, but again, the coach focused on the favorites and the girls who
The biggest difference between good coaches and bad coaches is how they influence and handle a their players. A good coach can push a kids out of their comfort zone to make him/her play better. Good coaches also make the players a better person in society and help them gain confidence. A good coach is a fair coach who sees all of his athletes as equals even when some athletes are superior to others. A bad coach does the opposite of what good coaches. They have a negative effect on the children they coach. Bad coaches can make practice a hostile environment pushing the kids to their mental and physical limit. Bad coaches also cut down their players confidence rather than build it
With the right influence, communication and skill development is the key to a valuable coach. Without my two outstanding high school coaches, I wouldn’t have the love for basketball and track the way I do today. They have taught me everything I needed to know for the present, along with tips for the future. Coach Lewis and Coach Kohler have done more for me than what I’ve ever deserved and I will never be able to pay them back for all their help and encouragement. But I hope they have understanding of how much of a change they can make on someone's life, someone's life like my
So many Coaches have talent and dedication for what they do. I 'm proud to play for one that has a spectacular history of coaching. That coach is Dennis Lorio, who Graduated from LSU (Louisiana State University) with an economic degree and played baseball. “I love the intensity and the relationship in football” Coach Lorio explaining with a passionate expression. I can see it in his eyes that he is very dedicated and hardworking coach. As of now he is 62 years old and still willing to coach. “It’s not the same without coaching. The joy and the sorrow I feel during the season has been addicted to me. I’ve been in this game almost all my life and that is a very long time.”
To be a college coach you have to be very dedicated and love the sport you are coaching. Being a college coach is very time consuming and a very hard job to land in the sports world. The competition that one faces when trying to get into the job field is fierce. This means that the job as a coach in the collegiate athletic career field is limited to a small percentage of the people that end up applying. These people need to be able to fulfill a variety of duties for their universities, and because of this it is important that anyone who is thinking of applying knows the difficulty that comes with the job (Greenwald, 2010).
Coaches have a huge impact on the sportsmanship and behavior displayed by their team. According to Churdar (2015), “The coach bears the greatest burden of responsibility for sportsmanship. His influence upon the attitudes and behavior of the players, the student body, and the fans is unequalled.” (p. 2). Coaches have a huge influence on the behavior and attitude of their athletes. According to John Wooden, “Profound responsibilities come with teaching and coaching. You can do so much good-or harm. It’s why I believe that next to parenting, teaching and coaching are the two most important professions in the world” (as cited in Matheny, 2015, p. 99-100). This is a very weighty but true statement. The majority of athletes look to their coaches for guidance not only in athletics, but in life.
Coaches… there are a lot of coaches out there. Good coaches, bad coaches, and great coaches. Me personally likes a coach who is always on top of his belongings and business. If a coach slacks off and doesnt even care about the players or staff or the game he is coaching then he is plain out a terrible coach. I once had this one coach who didn’t care at all. He was terrible in and outside the classroom. He constantly gave out book work and didn’t even teach. On the field he didn’t even coach. He constantly gave us hell and always had something negative to say. He only lasted one year here because he was terrible. Now a very good coach i had… he was always there for the players. He always stayed on top of the game and was always there to pick
In the world college basketball, most basketball players come and go. Moreover, these athletes remain in a conundrum. For those unaware, professional sports remains as volatile as a high-risk investment. This remains attributed to the uncertainty pertaining to professional players. With that being said, numerous players get injured and lose their dreams of playing the sport professionally. In spite of all of these risks, several college basketball teams continue to produce desirable talent. Moreover, these athletes would cease to exist without the assistance of a coach. To expound further, college basketball coaches play an integral role in defining an athlete's strength and using these strengths to their advantage. Furthermore, college basketball
I have been playing baseball since I was 7 years old and I have experienced various coaching styles throughout the years. My experience with the Wheatland Athletics Association playing on the Ducks Baseball Travel Team has been a positive experience. The coaches create a healthy environment of support in developing and tweaking a player’s skills with organized and structured practices, as well as, the opportunity to use the batting cages on our own time. The instruction and guidance given during games help motivate to keep a positive attitude when the team is a bit off and not performing to the best of our abilities. On the other, the coaches keep the team level-headed and humble when the momentum is going our way as the lead can disappear as fast as it came. Along with helping prepare an athlete physically, they also encourage a strong mindset. The coaches emphasize the importance of perseverance and endurance in keeping focused when the going gets tough and most importantly, to never give up. They also enforce the importance of school and finding the balance between athletics and schoolwork. This foster a strong work ethic both on and off the field. In addition, finding the balance between athletics and academics is crucial, as they are both
Coach Dean Smith was head coach of the University of North Carolina (UNC) men’s basketball team for 36 years, from 1961 to 1997. He tallied 879 wins during his tenure at UNC, with his teams appearing in 11 Final Fours and winning two National Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. He also coached the 1976 United States men’s basketball team to an Olympic gold medal. Coach Smith led and mentored many future National Basketball Association (NBA) legends such as James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse and Michael Jordan, to name a few. His successful basketball strategies and game innovations no doubt contributed to his wins on the court, but as important to his sustained team success was his methodical approach to team building and genuine care for his players as individuals. Dean Smith was both a visionary and ethical leader. This essay will detail how Coach Smith was a visionary leader that fostered an inclusive environment and used transformational leadership, with a focus on individual consideration, to methodically mold his teams. Additionally, the essay will show how Coach Smith was an ethical leader as he avoided falling into the ethical trap of worry over image and used the essential intellectual trait of intellectual perseverance in confronting the ethical
There are hundreds of coaching styles, some are successful and others are not. These different styles include different psychology and thinking behind decisions and contrasting philosophies and strategies. In this literature review, only three main coaching styles were analyzed. Many different styles exist, some of which are very effective. Studying countless more coaches could help one broaden one’s knowledge on more coaching styles. There are countless lessons to be learned from coaches, both inside and outside of basketball. An effective coach has not only perfected his psychology, philosophy, and strategy of the game but has also learned how to make an impact on the athletes he has the privilege to
Coach Henson went to college for 4 ½ years. If you want to be a full time student, you have to have 12 hours a semester. His best part about his job is when students come out and give it their all and they do not complain, and the worst part about his job is that if he knows that you have potential and you do not at least try, that upsets him because he knows that you can do it. Work hard and play hard. Coach Henson is working on his Master’s Degree and he already has his Bachelor’s Degree. You can apply to Coach your favorite sport, but you have to Coach more than one sport at little schools because there is not enough coaches. When you Coach there are a lot of responsibilities: conducting practices and games in a safe physical environment,
Bad coaches don’t care if they affect everyone they come into contact with and the people around them. When their not kind to a player the player goes home with a bad attitude affecting the whole family. The player starts to treat their family members like the coach treats them, thinking that that’s ok that’s how an adult treated them so it must be ok. That makes all adults look bad too. This has happen in my own family life. This isn’t ok at all ever and if it’s a young player it’s even harder for them to distinguish what was right and wrong in the situation. “There are a lot of “coaches” out there who don’t have CLUE ONE about how to really coach! These individuals consistently do far more damage to young people than they do
Playing basketball in elementary was always fun in P.E. but it was something that I wanted to do against real competition and not the crazy kids everyday kids in P.E. class. I first tried out for my elementary basketball team in the third grade which was the minimum grade they allowed kids to play basketball. Even though I was very shorter and smaller than the other kids I luckily made the team and it made me very happy. One day I gave my opinion to the coach regarding bettering the team thinking I could be very helpful. Unfortunately, he didn’t think so and thought I was insulting his knowledge about the game which they started a series of disagreements throughout the season. Eventually he put me off the team that year and every year afterwards. After being put off the team I told myself I would just do as the coach says even though I knew that I was right. A year past and I eventually tried out for my middle school team. I made the team and It was a whole different experience for me. I bettered myself throughout those years and carried my love of basketball into my high school years.
Basketball. The sport is played in elementary school, in middle school, and most common in physical education. There are stories of somebody hurting themselves playing this game. Injuries are a part of society, accidents happen everyday, even the smallest misstep as a twisted ankle could end up being an injury. Injuries are random events that will happen throughout our lives, but when an injury affects an entire sports organization, there is definitely more at stake.
