The Importance Of Roosevelt's New Deal Programs

Once President Franklin Roosevelt was elected during the Great Depression, his first 100 days enacted what he called the New Deal. This “deal” was a series of reforms that were meant to increase available jobs, better the working conditions, and put money back into the economy. Jobs offered during this time, as well as the relief, recovery, and reform efforts gave a kick start to the American economy, helping to pull us out of the Great Depression. Some examples of these efforts can be seen in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the National Recovery Administration (NRA), and the Social Security Act (SSA).

Reform and reconstruction were represented by new regulations and monetary policies, it stressed the importance of change to make understanding principles of, “justice and fairness by those in whom leadership was placed,” and to correct conditions in the economy. (Bolden, 48). Other goals that the New Deal was set to accomplish were: helping the banking industry recover from its failure after the stock market crashed, lowering the unemployment rate from a record high of twenty five percent in 1932, and to restore the hope and confidence of the public. (Appleby, Roosevelt’s New Deal went about all of these in a similar means, but it was condemned and criticized by many for some of the programs that were installed.

In his inaugural address, President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the tone for the upcoming half century when he confidently said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. In response to the economic collapse of the Great Depression, a bold and highly experimental fleet of government bureaus and agencies known as Roosevelt’s Alphabet Soup were created to service the programs of the New Deal and to provide recovery to the American people. The New Deal was one of the most ambitious programs in American history, with implications and government programs that can still be seen to this day. Through its enactment of social reform and conservation programs, the New Deal mounted radical policies that gave the federal government unprecedented power in the nation’s economy and society, however, the New Deal did not bring America out of the Great Depression and could be considered conservative in the context of the era, ultimately saving capitalism from collapsing in America.

Few Presidents have faced situations as troubled as Franklin Delano Roosevelt did when he was elected into office. The economy was in shambles and unemployment was skyrocketing. However, few Presidents have impacted the country as swiftly and effectively as FDR either. He set out to bring an end to the Great Depression, which had been created by fear itself. Undaunted, FDR and Congress, together, were able to pass a whopping 15 major bills in FDR’s first 100 days in office as a part of his New Deal. While each bill was important and extremely impactful in its own respect, the CCC, TVA, and FDIC are, when reflected upon today, considered to be the most successful programs created under these bills.

After the Stock Market Crash of 1929, life for Americans changed dramatically as the nation’s economy came to a halt. With unemployment rates reaching historic levels, politicians scrambled to find a fix for the Great Depression; but President Hoover’s attempts to mediate the issue with charity and negotiation were unsuccessful at best. In the end, what had the greatest impact at the time was President Roosevelt’s New Deal. Roosevelt’s New Deal, focusing on the goals of direct relief, economic recovery, and financial form, had limited effectiveness in its time, but expanded the long-term role of the federal government profoundly. Roosevelt’s primary concern was to provide direct relief to the poor by providing jobs and financial assistance.

The New Deal policies were created by Franklin D. Roosevelt and his people who are known as the “New Dealers”. They were created in hopes that they would bring relief, recovery, and reform to America and help bring America out of the depression. This flawed plan that many historians believe was largely a success brought America another rescission and caused the unemployment rate to rise. To believe that the New Deal was largely a success is to overlook its many failures and negative impact on America. From the failure of the NRA to the hostile reactions of many critics to the fact that unemployment rose, and the discrimination towards women and blacks it is clear that this New Deal was far from a success and was indeed very flawed.

The implementation of the New Deal was a necessary, yet highly criticized, and controversial time in our nation's history. Its creation, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, helped to resurrect a crumbling economy and put Americans back to work. However, like most things in life, there are always two sides to every story. This paper will explore both the pros and cons of FDR's, brainchild, the New Deal. In addition, it will argue that regardless of a positive or negative public opinion, there is no negating the fact that the New Deal was a pivotal movement and progressive step forward in our nation's history.

The CCC under his New Deal program, prompted the young males of America the chance to work and bring in money for their graving families, who were suffering during the Depression. They were working outside all the time, so it would better their overall physical appearance, but also their mental health too. FDR used the CCC to get the young men of America to become manlier. This ties to Teddy Roosevelt’s propaganda about America needing to show off their manliness to the rest of the world. The CCC brought forth a rejuvenation of the all-around health of the participants of the camps. The outdoor work that the workers were put through help transform their figures. As the Secretary of Labor, she played a role in the conditions of the workers the New Deal programs.

The role that FDR had in the grand scheme of things as president was primarily the New Deal which created the modern social safety net. During his presidency the best way to describe his leadership and tactics he used in pursuing his policy agendas, is that it inspired a term, the "Imperial Presidency," which would be used on subsequent presidents with similar styles. President Roosevelt's accomplishments were not only on the home front but also included major foreign policy successes with the prosecution of WWII and laying the groundwork for the United Nations .

FDR was to many people of that time a proactive, assertive, and brilliant president. He assembled a group of intelligent people to help create and implement changes in America known as the Brain Trust. (Shultz, 2014). Furthermore, in 1933 he established organizations, committees, safety nets in an attempt to prevent a depression ever occurring again. Moreover, the New Deal was developed and implemented, it expanded government control.

During the 1930s a series of acts and programs were created under the Roosevelt administration. These programs were called the New Deal acts, Alphabet acts, and agencies. These programs focused on relief and recovery from the troubles of the Great Depression. Some acts like the Agricultural Adjustment Act were developed to help the farmers out of extreme poverty but as of today the majority of the acts are not in use and unfair. The AAA act as stated above gave farmers money for their empty plots of lands for crops to reduce surpluses and increase the sale price. There were a lot of way that Roosevelt's program worked and there were sometimes were it didn't work. He had Coolidge beat because they thought Roosevelt was the closest to being born a politician. The people knew that Roosevelt had it in him to lead the nation to new and great things. During Roosevelt's Presidency, he created many New Deal Programs and had a lot of success with them, and they greatly influenced the nation. President created many laws to keep our nation under control and he did an amazing job at doing so.
