A 5 year old wakes up on a bright and sunny day with no worries in the world. Looking into the mirror, they don’t even think twice about the way they look. Putting on whatever clothes, hair crazy, shoes untied; Not focused on what matches with what, and what other kids might think. That is the beauty of being young. The study also concluded that more males increased their sense of self-esteem during this time than did females. After people approach the age of 30, most self-concepts remain relatively stable without significant conscious effort (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 63). Despite the large amount of people that feel confident and comfortable in expressing themselves freely, many adolescents have a deteriorating concept of self because of the belief that they should have to conform to their peer’s ideals. What is acceptance? Acceptance is the the action or process of being received as adequate or suitable. Acceptance plays an important role between individuals that are different. What people do not understand is that everyone will not view everything the same way you do. In, Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion, American Flag Stands for Tolerance, and The Lottery, the people do not show acceptance. They discriminate against others because others go against what they view as adequate or suitable.
As young people progress through the adolescent stage they begin to view the world and themselves very differently than as they did a few years earlier. They become more intellectual. In the later stages of adolescence young people become less concerned about their appearance and social acceptance and more concerned about worldly issues and "who they really are." As health professionals, it is important to constantly be self-aware and to discover new truths about oneself. Jourard (1971) stated that lack of personal awareness can lead to a feeling of vulnerability when approached by patients expressing feelings, due to the fear of not knowing how to respond in an appropriate way. By having self-awareness, the sources of limitations that have the tendency to cause anxiety can be identified, so forward planning can be prepared to reduce or eliminate the impact this may have on performing activities and approaches to patients. Certain individuals utilise different techniques to minimise anxiety such as deep-breathing exercises or thinking of the positive outcome that comes once the source of fear or anxiety is overcame. Meanwhile, others prefer being critiqued, since it allows areas within practise needing improvements to be highlighted and alternatives to be considered.

According to Maslow (1962), people avoid acquiring new knowledge about themselves because of the uncertain and uncomfortable feelings they can receive (as cited in Whetten & Cameron, 2011).
