In today’s society the majority of the crimes are still being committed by people who have possessed a firearm that has been obtained illegally or without proper permits. That being said there has been a strong push for gun control because of the rise of shootings involving a large group of people such as the Columbine massacre, Virginia Tech shooting and latest Aurora movie theater shooting involving people who have purchased firearms legally. Guns are a major problem in our society and the numbers of these gun-related murders are continuing to rise. On top of the murders you also have people losing their lives through misfire and gun-related suicides. The total death toll of all gun-related deaths averages over 30,000 per year in the U.S. (http://blogs.kqed.org/lowdown/2013/03/07/u-s-gun-deaths-visualizing-the-numbers/). I believe that enforcing stricter gun laws will contribute to getting these numbers lower. The issues following gun control have been very outrageous in my opinion. Let us talk about the city of Chicago, for instance. Chicago is known for its dangers. Being one of the most dangerous cities throughout the entire United States of America, gun violence has been a major issue over the years. As much as people say it will get better, things only get worse. In the Chicago Sun Times article, we take a look at how this issue was attempted to be solved. From the year of 2013 until present day, more than 7,000 weapons were collected each year. Chicago, to most people, is considered to be the murder capital of the U.S. Most of the murders were committed by guns. This is extremely sad, because think about all of the innocent lives that were taken; mothers, children, you name it. One of the main things that contribute to most of the gun violence is the fact that the city of Chicago has many gangs. Gang members will do everything and anything they can to make sure they hurt their rivals, regardless of the outcome.

Gun control should not exist at all in the United States. Mass shootings have almost become seen as normal event in the United States. What people do not understand is that gun control is not the answer; there are countries with little to no control that have fewer shootings. According to The Washington Post,Finland is ranked number 4 in countries with the most guns despite that they only had 24 homicides by firearm (“Gun homicides and ownership by countries” n.pag.) . The number of murders, homicides, or suicides do not go up due to people just owning more guns. Clayton Perry, a staff writer at the University of Maine, even points out “Stricter gun laws were in place during the Assault Weapons Ban between 1994 and 2004, but that didn't stop the shooters at Columbine in 1999 ”(Perry n. pag.). In Iceland, thirty out of a hundred people own a gun and they have zero homicides caused by guns a year(“Gun Homicides and ownership by country” n. pag.). In this day and age, everything is unpredictable, guns are a form of protection for everyone and there should not be restrictions on protection. The U.S. Department of Justice released a data brief that states, “ On average in 1987-92 about 83,000 crime victims per year used a firearm to defend themselves or their property”(Rand BJS Statistician n. pag.). The National Sheriffs Association released that the average police response time is at eighteen minutes while the average school shooting only last twelve minutes (“Embracing Technology To Decrease Response Time” n. pag.). Gun control should not exist because other countries do fine without it , high gun ownership has no link with increasing death rates , and guns are not harmful when instructions are followed.

Today in America we face many controversial problems. With strict gun control, Americans cannot feel safe, and to some the thought of not being able to use a firearm in self-defense is very frightening. We Americans should never have to be in fear of not being able to protect ourselves, especially in the comfort of our own home. How are strict gun control laws and regulations going to reach the estimated 65 million gun owners that own approximately 240 million firearms (Just Facts Gun Control)? The answer is simple, they can’t. There must be an end to gun control, its problems significantly outweigh any good intentions it has, and besides there is no doubt about it, America is a safer place when the citizens are able to own firearms.

The only reason for our nation to enact gun control laws is to reduce violent crime. There is no other logical reason for gun control outside of reducing crime. If gun control proves to be ineffective in reducing crime rates then why have it? While researching this I found time after time where statistics have shown laws such as banning handguns to be completely ineffective in reducing crime rates and I also found where allowing the carry of these same weapons resulting in a reduction of crime rates. One of the major aspects that should be heavily considered by those wanting to take away the legal ownership of firearms in the U.S is that we would also be taking them away from the people who have weapons for their intended purpose. Washington DC had a law in place from 1976 through 2008 that made it illegal for residence to possess handguns and also required trigger locks on all other firearms rendering them useless. The amount of crimes happening today will only increase with stricter gun control laws because there is a higher temptation to steal guns. An American citizen claims, “Ever since I first learned how to shoot, the issue with gun violence around the nation became clear: Guns are not the problem; people are” (Sherfenski). Police need to lock up these people committing the disastrous crimes that affect so many innocent lives. These blameless people are not prepared when they are being attacked, and that is because most shootings tend to happen in areas where guns are controlled. The former United States Secretary of Education, William Bennett, explains the reason that criminals decide to go to places that have controlled gun laws is because: “These murderers, while deranged and deeply disturbed, are not dumb. They show up to schools, universities, malls and public places where their victims cannot shoot back” (Bennett). Even if guns are controlled in public places including malls and schools, where there are uncontrolled shootings, why would it make a difference if they were controlled everywhere? It would not make a difference whatsoever because these crimes are done out of pure, revolting pleasure. Committing a crime is one thing, but taking away a right that was given to Americans in the 1790s is a whole different story.

Gun regulation has been a controversial topic since they were first established as a weapon. People for and against gun regulation provide strong arguments for their side. Gun regulation has fluctuated over time due to changes in office. Being a democracy prevents us from having consistency. As a nation we continue to change regulations on guns because of the different views our democracy allows us to have. The main aspects pose the most problems in gun control are violence, illegal sale of guns, and mental health checks.

To begin with, gun control laws aren’t doing any good in their current state. In fact, from a study done from 1980 to 2009 “assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level.” This reveals us that it isn’t the laws that are in control, it is the people that are in control. To elaborate, another study found that “states with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes.” With crime rates dropping the deaths and injury rates dropped an “average of 90 percent.” In addition to less crime, one law passed by the government was for civilians to conceal carry, which means to carry a firearm undetected. This law being passed is what caused the drop in crime and violence, and again seeing as how a law for gun carriage is good, it is shown how it is on the people to make the right decisions. So, if there wasn’t a law for concealed carry, there may be more accidents. There may be a scenario in which a bank is being robbed, if and when a civilian is there to incapacitate the perpetrator, no harm will occur to the surrounding audience (Gun Control).

The US has the highest firearm death rate,and alaska is the state with highest gun related deaths.This is why in my opinion we need stricter gun laws,enforced by the federal government. Even if some people disobey the new gun laws after they receive punishment it could reduce the amount of deaths.

There also should be stricter gun laws in the country. In the book, “The Spiral Notebook” by Stephen and Joyce Singular, the authors refer to James Holmes, the theatre shooter in Aurora, Colorado and state that, “With just one of his guns, the AR-15, he’d fired thirty rounds in twenty-seven seconds” (Page 27). AR-15s should not be so easily available to any American. There should be stricter gun laws and background checks for these types of guns. Banning AR-15s would help with this problem. Also there should be a federal law requiring longer wait periods to purchase any firearms and conducting background checks for everyone in every state.

Gun control should be enforced because it will help reduce crime rate. Alex Yablon states “The Stanford team found precisely the opposite: ‘Ten years after the adoption of RTC laws,’ they write, ‘violent crime is estimated to be 13-15 percent higher than it would have been without the RTC law”(Yablon). This proves that gun laws are way too lenient and need to be enforced more because the RTC law made it easier for people to get their hands on firearms which was supposed to decrease the crime rate but as stated in the evidence it instead had the opposite effect. So gun laws would have a beneficial impact, reducing the crime rate. Douglas Weil discusses “We know that well-tailored gun laws work. The Brady Law is working to prevent easy access to handguns by criminals. Since the law was first implemented, eighty-five felons a day have been denied access to a handgun that they tried to purchase from licensed gun dealers. Virginia 's law limiting handgun purchases to one gun a month has had an enormous impact on gun trafficking patterns along the east coast”(Weil). This shows that the Brady Law is help enforcing gun control by preventing easy access to guns which is reducing crimes such as felonies.
