The Importance Of Strict Gun Control Laws

Decent Essays

Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States yet in 2016 there were 762 gun related homicides, 3,550 shooting incidents, and 4,331 shooting victims. Despite strict gun laws Chicago had one of the deadliest years in history, so are the laws really working? Strict gun control does not mean that the amount of gun related crime will decrease. So, what is the point in making strict gun control laws?
Gun control does not work. Chicago is a prime example of this, Chicago has some of the strictest laws in America but led the country in gun violence in 2016. So why are the gun laws not working? For starters criminals do not care about the laws, criminals break the laws and gun laws are just more laws they will break. Once somebody decides they are going to commit a crime such as murder not having a gun is going to stop the person from committing the murder that person will either possess a firearm illegally or commit the crime without a gun. Trying to ban firearms is also likely to drastically increase the black market or street value of the weapons since they will no longer be able to buy them at a store, assuming that they would even be able to pass a background check to purchase it legally, and most likely lead to even more crime. Between 2000 and 2013 the majority of active shooter incidents in American was at schools, colleges, malls, and businesses. The people that go to schools and businesses to commit murder usually want to commit a mass murder and kill as many innocent people as they can before they get killed or kill themselves. Since they want mass casualties the shooters do not want to be shot which is why they go where there are a lot of people and where there are very few or nobody that is armed and prepared to defend themselves and others. Schools are often a target of people who want to cause mass casualties since there is usually only one armed and ready person on campus if that which often makes schools a desirable target, but what if all the faculty and staff member at the school was trained and carrying a firearm then that would drastically decrease the chances of somebody wanting to commit mass murder at a school since that person's odds of murdering more than a one person
