In a world where technology consumes a great deal of what we do and how we do it, it makes sense that teachers should evaluate what role this tool should have in the classroom. What can be used as a very useful and beneficial tool to students can often become a hindrance to learning if not used properly. When done correctly, technology opens up a whole new world of resources for students in the classroom. For example, I have seen teachers use technology in their classrooms to do virtual field trips, interactive web quests, as well as math/reading games on the computer to supplement classroom material. Technology can also be used for instructing students as a provider of scaffolds for struggling students. Some students that do not focus well during direct instruction from the teacher can use technology (such as a computer) to do interactive activities that cover the same material as the lecture, only using a more stimulating medium. This concept is also true when it comes to supplementary work for advanced learners. Often students who are advanced finish projects and assignment early, leaving them with nothing to do but distract their fellow students. However, if the student is permitted to use technology (such as a computer) to do some supplementary academic work through a web quest, or educational games. Like Aziz states in his article, I agree that technology is a help to students, when implemented correctly. When implemented incorrectly, we see things such as teacher laziness, student laziness, low test scores, as well as apathy from teachers, as they expect technology to do the job of teaching for them, which is NOT its purpose. Overuse of technology in education runs the risk of "dumbing down" students (Berry and Postman) through over stimulation as opposed to actual productive instruction. ere, I will discuss my personal philosophy technology and look into its role in the teaching and learning process as well as to what extent it is used in my classroom. Technology's role in teaching and learning is a balancing game. It is imperative for the teacher in an elementary classroom (or any classroom for that matter) to understand that technology should never be at the forefront of
The use of technology in the classroom is an important tool to utilize as an educator. Technology allows for educators to have instant access to a plethora of resources that would not be available if technology was not used in the classroom. Teachers have the ability to plan lessons, create presentations, and have interactive games for students to use as a learning tool through the use of different digital devices. Modern day technology is rapidly advancing and providing teacher with many different tools to use in the classroom to enhance the students learning experience.
Using technology in education can be beneficial for students in that it allows for their educations to be individualized. What this means is that, through technology, students can take charge of their own learning by finding out which learning method works best for them and using it to better their learning experience. In a traditional classroom, something like this would not have been entirely possible. A traditional classroom teacher simply stands in front of the students and teaches them in the same way. In the world of education,
Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf have changed the way people learn, work, and interact with each other through the invention of Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocols which were the main inventions that lead to the development of the internet. The internet has affected how we learn, how we communicate, how business works, and how our brain works.
Even though many education systems are embracing the face of technology, some schools are still attempting to hold on to traditional teaching styles. In a 2012 New York Times article, teachers reported a decline in written work, and shorter attention spans which they believe is the result of all of the technological distractions (Richtel). This is just an example of the many concerns coming from teachers and school boards. Another issue they find is that they are being pressed to integrate these new advances into their time tested lesson plans, ultimately taking away from teaching and the student learning. If teachers believe or see that the students are the ones suffering from that, they are going to be less willing to try and understand the concept of technologies role in education. Although these educators have respected opinions, the goal should more so be to
So, why do we want to bring technology into the classrooms if it is expensive, harms the students health mentally and physically, it’s not helping them, and students stop learning proper handwriting? However, this can be stopped! Parents, who are in charge of their students, should gain more knowledge about this and challenge the school board. Parents should also tell others, start a petition against technology in classrooms and they should not only want safety for their children but also for every else’s kids. Their children are going to be the next generation of obesity, health problems and learning challenges if the schools are allowing more and more technology in the classrooms, which parents should be concerned
In an ever changing society with rapid technology growth, technology could be viewed in many ways. For many, they strongly believe that technology has many educated purposes as students have unlimited access to anything ever created, said or done. Whereas others believe that the amount of technology that is being given to the students aren't benefiting them at all, in fact, technology is creating more problems, which could jeopardize the students future. Before schools should consider becoming an all technology atmosphere, schools need to acknowledge the negative aspects that technology can bring to the table, this would entail the lack of imagination, short attention span and the inability to develop a set of skills due to the widespread
Technology is everywhere, it is involved in almost every part of our culture. It affects how we live, work, play, and most importantly learn. With technology being such a fundamental part of our lives and growing each day, it only makes sense that schools incorporate technology in the classrooms. Even though many people support the use of technology in schools, there are those that have concerns about the effectiveness of technology and whether or not it undermines education to solely prepare students for the workforce. Despite the concerns, technology is being integrated with classroom lessons daily, and proving how beneficial it is for student success.
A person can’t walk into a classroom and not see some type of technology. When teaching young children, teachers should not just give their student technology. Teachers should teach their younger students how to use the technology around them. In his 2006 article, “Overdominance of Computers,” Lowell Monke states that teachers should use more technology in high school than the younger grades. In which I agree, because younger children need to learn how to do things without the technology presented to them. Also, I guaranteed by the time I am teaching and my students reach high school, there is going to be new types of
Not many people would argue that by increasing the availability of technology in education is a bad thing. There is, however, a serious and thought provoking debate going on regarding the use of technology in the classroom. Some issues are whether technology should be integrated in the classroom as a learning tool, how will students be affected in lower socioeconomic status, and it will improve academic performance.
Technology has had and will continue to have, the ability to transform society and necessity to incorporate into education to, as Bruce, 1998 simply states it, “…learn technology, learn through technology, and learn from technology.” (p. 22) Teachers, not computer technologies themselves, need to take ownership of the responsibility ensuring students learn well with any given technology. Teachers and school leadership must be willing to use the available tools appropriately, integrate into the development of lesson plans and implement in the classroom for it to be successful to support the education of students. As technology advances forward at a relentless pace,
The importance of using technology in the classroom is becoming increasingly important. As technology continues to evolve it becomes more and more imperative that it’s integrated in the classrooms as well. This allows for children who do not have access to technology at home the opportunity to learn these technologies that they will need their entire student careers. To have the advantages of technology available to some kids, and not to others gives those with the privilege of computers, etc… an advantage. The way that life is now, there is not man jobs, or many aspects of life in general that do not require the use of a computer, or even something more advanced. Not only do people who are
In our progressive society, we are all aware of the development of technology and the effect it has had on daily lives. People use technology as a way to communicate with each other, a form of entertainment, or as a tool to give them instant information at all times. Technology has a significant influence on many different parts of society. Concerning education, certain electronic devices such as computers, smart boards, and tablets assist the learning process for students. However, the issue of technology in education has evolved. Some claim that technology in the classroom has educational benefits, yet others believe this is simply a paradox and that technology creates problems in the classroom. This essay discusses how integrating new technologies in the classroom can be a detriment to the learning process, but also simultaneously can help with the academic achievement of young students.
The use of technology in schools has a great effect on not only students, but teachers as well. Today, we mostly think of technology as computers, but it is much more than that. In fact, one of the first technologies used in the classroom was the chalkboard.
Within the American education system technology is becoming more abundant, but what is the schooling system doing to maintain a high-tech classroom? Classroom technology is important but it is also important to maintain and upgrade the technology around the student that use them. If students today were given electronic typewriters it would not be the necessary tool for the child to thrive in a rapidly developing world. Technology is a very important tool for the students of today, but some do not have access to technology that would give them a fair advantage in the world. Students today are not always given the tools needed to succeed but the department of education is trying to take steps in a direction more suitable for the future generations. On the front page of the infrastructure section on the department of education website it states, “To provide students with the education they need to thrive in a globally connected world, we must find ways to design, fund, acquire, and maintain the infrastructure that will make connectivity a reality for every teacher and student in every classroom” (GOVERNMENT). This clear statement is a preface to the article that explains the many points that teachers must comprehend when it comes to giving students a proper education. A very important statement that they point to though is, not all districts are the same. There is not a fix all the issue at hand. The importance is to maintain a comprehensive knowledge of modern technologic and
The way we teach students in the modern classroom has massively changed throughout the years. One major changing factor is the development and use of technology. Before, classrooms were filled with paper, pencils, crayons, and all things needed to be completely hands on with our education. Now, most classrooms have replaced these things with tablets and laptops and smart boards that students get to spend all day staring at. Technology has the potential to be a great thing for our students, but it is being used to the point that it is no longer helpful.
