My junior year of high school, I decided to take the AP Literature and writing class. This class covered a slight amount literature, but the majority of the class focused on writing. The purpose of this class was to prepare students for the AP exam. This test determined if the student can get a college credit for the class. The assignment was to write a synthesis essay, an essay that uses multiple sources to back up the original argument, using six out of the seven sources we researched in an hour and a half. The goal of the assignment was to prepare the class for timed essays during the actual AP exam. I knew ahead of time that I was not planning on taking the exam because I believed that I was not a strong writer, but my primary goal was to prove to myself that I can write an exceptional essay. Due to this experience, I developed confidence as a writer as well as a person. The day arrived to take the exam, and I was overwhelmed with anticipation and anxiety. I researched the topic and the sources I planned to use. I had an immense, thorough understanding of the topic, but I was afraid that I would not finish the essay in the expected time frame. I was worried about this because I have always been a slow writer, especially regarding topics that I am not interested in. The topic for this essay was parenting styles. The different types of parenting styles are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The parenting styles varied from extremely
Reading and writing has never come very easy to me. There have been a lot of factors that hinder me from being able to read and write well. English has always been my least favorite class during elementary school throughout high school and it still is now in college. I can count the number of books that I’ve actually been able to completely finish reading on one hands. In school, whenever we were assigned to read however many chapters of a book at night, I would just look up the spark notes for that chapter because I have such a hard time reading. By the way, reading the spark notes does not work as a substitute for reading the book instead.
Writing is one of the most important skills you can have in life. Being able to construct high-quality papers, among other things, is key. There are so many different forms of writing that people can utilize however they want to, whether it's for research purposes or for creative purposes. Jordan Rosenfeld wrote, “Perfectionism instills fears that you will never live up to a standard set in your mind or one that’s been set for you by others.” This quote accurately describes my relationship with writing. A significant part of my fears and apprehensions about writing relate to creating that perfect paper. I consume too much time judging if what I have written is good enough for the reader, as well as for myself based on my standards. It is important that I recognize how the value in expressing my ideas in writing could potentially influence others viewpoints. Thus, awarding me the ability to create something I can admire as well. While I have no difficulty in the writing required in my career, ultimately the goal is to become
Throughout the course of this semester we have learned various writing techniques that have helped me grow and improve as a writer. By acquiring the necessary skills for writing from this class and pushing myself to further improve on these skills, I can now apply my knowledge to future courses that I may take. For instance, while I may not be required to do the same project, I can use the same principles that we learned from units, such as, argument analysis or revision to complete another assignment. While I might have had some experience with the lessons from this class, I still had room to improve and the evidence for this can be seen throughout my course work. In this essay, I will present several artifacts as evidence to prove how I applied
As a student who has now been in college for a semester, I think that writing exemplifies how well you do in college. Others may argue that writing does not play a big role in determining if one does well in college or not. As I stand by my opinion of writing playing a big role in how well someone does in college, there are many things you still have to do over your years in college.
Writing to me has changed over the years as I experience more as I grow up. From thinking that writing is dull to believing writing is expressive and vibrant. From the learning toddler to the naive twelve year-old to the seventeen year-old scholar. I have many great and horrible experiences in writing which led to the writer I am today.
When I was a little kid my parents and family were always trying to teach me how to read and write. Its been something I’ve known how to do without even thinking about it. When I was around 6 or 7 years old we would go to Mexico and visit my grandma, who had lived there at the time, and the neighbor had a granddaughter a little older than me. She would come over and play, one day I had brought my toys and some books and she had asked me what they were and I told her they were books. She went on and explained how she didn’t know how to read or write, how her grandparents couldn’t take her to school due to them be elderly and how far away they lived from a school. I was kind of confused because in the United States I hadn’t ever met someone
Since the beginning of time, I’ve always hated anything that had to do with writing or reading. Writing to me was always a chore, something that I had to do or else I would fail my classes. To add on, writing wasn’t exactly my forte, I was honestly horrendous at writing. You could give me a whole week to do a book report and I still wouldn’t be able to get it right on my 5th try. Even today, I still despise writing, the thought of not knowing what to write always lingered alongside me. I would often find myself sitting alone in my small room, listening to music and not knowing what to write; I would begin typing out a few sentences, then ultimately backspacing every word because it may not be “ good enough”. This whole typing and

All my life I’ve struggled with writing, creative or research based, it has been the biggest barrier in my high school career. I find it surprising how much I struggle with it since I’ve been writing essays and papers in nearly every class. Most classes that aren’t even English have an assignment which involves writing some sort of paper, even in Spanish.
In today’s modern world, more and more schools are incorporating electronics in the curriculum, but these changes are having immeasurable effects on students including the demise of their handwriting. The art of handwriting has been around since its invention in 4000 BC, and according to Anne Chemin, Mesopotamia was more than likely the birthplace of handwriting (Chemin). Handwriting is the most beneficial way for everyone to learn and develop their brains and creative processes. Today we will delve into how handwriting increases brain activity. Second, we will examine the educational advancements of handwriting. Finally, we will explore how handwriting improves creative thoughts.
I never saw myself as someone who would have an interest in reading and writing. I always thought that I wasn't cut out to be the writer type, and I barely ever read books past the age of ten. I still don't read and write as much as I would like, but now, because of my interest in video games and movies, I have a deep interest in what reading and writing have to offer. I now realize that a book can be even more creative and influential than any other entertainment source. And writing, writing isn't something that is boring and mundane, but serves as a vessel for ideas and imagination. All of these realizations were made because of the creative fires that were lit because of movies and video games.
So far I have learned a lot about writing, and myself as a writer in English 1101. I have learned that I am not a perfect writer and I tend to make many mistakes. One thing I tend to struggle with is coming up with a topic to write about. Usually it takes me a few days to come up with an idea. The Educational History Narrative was definitely the paper I struggled with the most. I spent days trying to find a topic to write about. Another thing I struggle with is being repetitive. I think I struggle with this because I don’t know what to write about, so I just keep repeating myself. I don’t realize that I am repetitive until someone else reads my paper, and points it out.
From a young age, reading and writing has always been important to me. It began with a children’s book about a bumblebee my mom repeatedly read to me to make me believe anything was achievable, even a bumblebee flying. Once I learned how to read for myself, a whole new world opened up to me with every story imaginable. As TV became the prevalent pastime before and after school, reading faded to the background, a thing of the past. However, writing continued to be something I did often, especially in school, where it was introduced to me in third grade. Eventually my writing had to evolve from creative and fictional to analytical and persuasive. I had to learn new skills and essay formats, proper grammar and spelling, and no longer felt the enthusiasm I once felt with creating a story of my own. Previously, my best work came when I had the freedom to write without regulation.
Reading and writing are both important; you can’t have one without the other. They are skills that are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary.
