So far I have learned a lot about writing, and myself as a writer in English 1101. I have learned that I am not a perfect writer and I tend to make many mistakes. One thing I tend to struggle with is coming up with a topic to write about. Usually it takes me a few days to come up with an idea. The Educational History Narrative was definitely the paper I struggled with the most. I spent days trying to find a topic to write about. Another thing I struggle with is being repetitive. I think I struggle with this because I don’t know what to write about, so I just keep repeating myself. I don’t realize that I am repetitive until someone else reads my paper, and points it out. As we move forward I would really like to become a better writer. I think that one way that I can do this is by using better vocabulary. In the recent papers that I have wrote, I did not use a broad span of vocabulary. Using words like “a lot’ and “stuff” is a habit that I need to break. Another way I can become a better writer is by being more descriptive and adding more details to my papers. I really need to improve on the flow of my papers. Sometimes I just start to write. Once I get done writing and go back to read my paper, they don’t make any sense. The papers I write can seem to be out of order and just confusing. I also need to work on how to use commas. There are many times where I don’t know whether I should use one or not. I am sure that I will improve as a writer throughout the rest of this
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
Everybody has their own methods for writing; however, I believe there is always room for improvement. Chapter 3 in Everyone’s an Author has shown me that writing involves processes that need to be mastered through constant practice. It also revealed helpful tips on how to develop writing processes that can help write effective papers.
Like transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, my writing style transformed from something mediocre to something quite exceptional. In high school, even when I took advanced placement English and Literature courses, I was never good at writing. My writing would lack structure, reasoning, syntax, and a well-defined thesis statement. My inadequate grades on writing assignments lowered my self-esteem, so I assumed I would never enjoy writing papers because I believed I could never improve. However, since attending a university my writing style has improved far beyond my expectation. My EN 101 course enhanced my understanding of the different ways I could approach my writing. Also, it enhanced my comprehension of outlines to complete assignments. Investing quality time into my writing made a substantial difference because I became a stronger writer. Through the late nights, constant revisions, and agonizing head traumas, I learned that my writing is truly spectacular whenever I incorporate well-defined thesis statements, provide sufficient supporting evidence, and maintain a clear focus in my assignments.
Writing from sources is very important for academic inquiry. It plays an important role in publication as well. Writing from the sources in introductory writing sources devoted to research writing, critical thinking, analysis, and argument. Writing from sources made people to write some valuable research on summary. Students have to be sure that they are using the right sources, and they are understanding the material. The main reason for patch writing on papers is that students do not understand the material. Students have to understand the subject to be able to write a good summary and analysis. Students usually patch writing on papers when they don’t understand the material. I used to do the same thing when I couldn’t understand the subject. Analyzing the material and trying to avoid becoming confused by data smog, can help students to avoid patch writing.
Writing has always been a challenge for me. This is well evidenced by reading papers I wrote as recently as this past August. Concepts such as flow, content, vocabulary, structure, organization, grammar, and tone appear simple enough to capture on paper; I have learned over the past few months, however, that appearances can be misleading. Writing takes planning, creativity, commitment, and for me, a great deal of revising. I cannot pretend any mastery of these tasks. However, I have made progress. I spent extensive time improving my vocabulary, building better organizational skills, strengthening my use of grammar, and studying proper use of punctuation.
When writing my papers in English I was never sure what topic, I wanted to write about. I rotated between two, one being “The Mistreatment of Animals in Zoos” and the second and my main topic being “Is College Worth the Cost.” When writing these papers, I noticed something about myself. I had grown as a writer compared to when I first walked into English 1100, I had some writing experience but not much my grammar lacked and I was the queen of sentence fragments. Throughout the semester during English 1100, my writing skills improved. From learning, how to format works cited page correctly to learning how to analyze a source. My writing improved wonders with each paper. My paper I, I struggled extremely with formatting issues and how to
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
Initially my writing lacked structure and a controlling purpose which caused my ideas to be incoherent and hard for the reader to understand. These difficulties could be attributed to the fact that I am an art student plagued with the disorganization and non-verbal method of an artist’s brain. Being this way, interpreting and conveying my thoughts accurately and eloquently into the assigned writings was fairly tough. However, during the course of English 101 I was able to identify my weaknesses through the aid of writing communities such as peer review sessions and conferences with my professor. With the help from these resources and the writing process I learned to better organize my essays and maintain a controlling purpose in order to help my audience
The first piece of writing in this section is my creative writing. I wrote this piece during my freshman year. The purpose for this piece was to grow my skills in story writing and my enhance my grammar skills. When I wrote this paper I wasn’t good at writing. Looking at this piece, I can see my thoughts didn’t flow well and I was all over the place. I wasn’t very excited to write so I didn’t do well on this paper.
To start off, I will describe the things I struggle with in my writing. My vocabulary is not that high so I often use basic terminology rather than using bigger more complex words. I know that I could look up words in the thesaurus, but ever to often I feel like that is just too much work and it takes time. Another thing I find myself doing a lot is making really long lengthy sentences instead of adding commas, semicolon, and periods where they go. In connection, I frequently use the same sentence type such as declarative instead of mixing it up and including a verity of sentences like exclamatory or interrogative. A final struggle I face when it comes to writing is repetition I find myself repeating the same words over and over again.
Always getting A’s on my papers caused me to believe that my writing was good enough, therefore, I never pushed myself to become a better writer. It was not until my 11th grade year that I ran into with my first real issue with my writing. One issue that I ran into with my writing was that I constantly used passive voice in my papers. This was my first time ever hearing about the passive voice, and seeing how prominent it was in my writing, I was surprised that nobody brought this to my attention. Another problem that was brought to my attention was that my papers were lacking detail. I thought that all that I was supposed to do in a paper was point out the main ideas of the topics that I was writing about. I did not know that I was supposed to explain the main ideas deeper than just the surface level. When learning about having to write with detail, I learned that it was important to show the reader why my ideas were correct instead of just telling them my ideas. Through this I learned that my writing was not where it needed to be and that I need to work to improve my
Writing is a tedious process which has a lot of challenges. When I was writing the paper, I faced a lot of problems. To begin with, getting started was a challenge to me. I had to think what was the purpose of writing this paper and come up with the ideas to present in the paper. Coming up with the introduction was somehow challenging. I had to ask myself, who will be my audience? Will my introduction catch the attention of my audience? Also, coming up with the thesis statement was a challenge. I had to think of a thesis which had to concur with what I was presenting in my the paper. Organization of my points was a challenge. I had to ensure that my paper had a flow of ideas that focused
Writing is an essential part of learning and is a skill that we all have to master over time, especially throughout our years dedicated to school. As a writer I feel comfortable in my ability to write and express my feelings over a topic. Even though I feel this way, I know there are several things I need to improve before I can be completely satisfied with my writings. This year I feel I will be able to accomplish this goal. In order to do this I will write about many different topics and use many different forms of writing. In the past I have written lots of pieces involving various stories, recollections, and reports. Through these experiences I have been able to develop a basic understanding of a few different types of writing styles, vocabulary and the many tones you can use to set the mood. By learning these things and reading the works of other authors, I have been able to expand my vocabulary and make the overall process of writing much easier to perform at a high level. Even though all of these things have helped me greatly, I still have a lot of things to learn in order to improve my writing.
Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don’t think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it’s
In this course, I have developed a variety of skills through reading, writing, and discussing the literature that we have read. The skills that I have developed from reading materials presented through this class would include the skill of annotating as well as the ability to better comprehend poetry. What I mean by the skill of annotating is that previously to this class I haven’t completed much annotation in my studies, and so when this class came along it really showed me how to annotate a piece of writing properly. In the beginning of the semester all we read was poems so during this time we annotated a great deal which really sharpened my skills of annotation. I started to learn what to look for within poems along with learning how the proper way to annotate/interpret something within a piece of writing. As the semester continued, we started to read more short stories rather than poems. When it came to annotating short stories, there was a different process to it. Rather than annotating every line in a poem, you would only annotate a few things within the short story. For example, you would annotate elements in a short story that were confusing or you just wanted to discuss it when we came together in class. After we finished up the short stories, we began reading full on books. Now think about it, you can’t annotate the whole book because we simply don’t have time for that, however, the only annotation that I ever did between the three books that we read was when I
