Everything started when I was in elementary school. Everything such as failure, quitting and absolutely no hope. I wasn’t even a teenager yet and I already hated school. School wasn’t the problem, writing was. I never realized how much I hate writing until it was time to take the ARMT test. The ARMT test was a standardized test that was given to us at the end of the school year. Throughout the whole year, I would be confident in my writing. Everything I wrote, I got an A on it. Even when it was time to test, I thought to myself, “you got the reading, writing, math, and social studies part. Science is the problem.” I would be sitting in the chair, with the test on the desk in front of me, carefully reading every question and bubbling in my answers. After spending 2 and a half long boring hours on the multiple choice part, it was time for the writing portion. Back then, the teachers didn’t call it “essays”, they called it the writing portion. When I read the topic, I thought it was a piece of cake. So I began to write. Everything that popped into my head, I wrote in the box they provided. The box was so little and I couldn’t write outside the box. Anything that was outside the box, wouldn’t be graded. So I used at least 3 pieces of paper. When I finished writing, I reread what I wrote. Everything was perfect. I had at least 5 sentences in each paragraph. I ended each sentence with a period. I didn't know anything about commas or semicolons at this age so I just had big black
Before starting school, I incapable to write or speak English at all. Because English is my second language I had a hard time understanding how to read and write in English. My parents and older siblings would often teach me the basics of having to know my numbers, ABCs, and by making me memorizing saying simple sentences and questions. English is everyone in my family's second language and because we did not grow up learning how to speak, read, and write in English which made it difficult for me when school started.
I feel that keeping the order of how writing should be done is important and helpful. I think that the best way to get students to understand how things really work with the writing process is to complete a paper with them, using all the steps of the writing process. Show them how it goes and how frustrating it can be for you as a teacher. Once they see that you had a hard time, but in the end had a good result then they will know that no matter what they can do it do. Having them to help you along the way will help too. I never learn by just watching so i am sure plenty of students need to get involved in the lesson. I will teach the students the three ways to do prewriting and allow them to choose what they prefer to use. Rough drafting might
Writing is one of the most important skills you can have in life. Being able to construct high-quality papers, among other things, is key. Not only to get a point across, but to accurately give information, or some just like to do it for fun. I write so that people can easily understand what the point is that I'm trying to get across. There are so many different forms of writing that people can utilize however they want to, whether it's for research purposes or for creative purposes. Being able to write well is a skill that can be utilized daily and can is very beneficial whether you have to write something for school, to write a resume and to type something up for a job.
Jordan Rosenfeld wrote, “Perfectionism instills fears that you will never live up to a standard set in your mind or one that’s been set for you by others.” This quote accurately describes my relationship with writing. A significant part of my fears and apprehensions about writing relate to creating that perfect paper. I consume too much time judging if what I have written is good enough for the reader, as well as for myself based on my standards. It is important that I recognize how the value in expressing my ideas in writing could potentially influence others viewpoints. Thus, awarding me the ability to create something I can admire as well. While I have no difficulty in the writing required in my career, ultimately the goal is to become
As a student who has now been in college for a semester, I think that writing exemplifies how well you do in college. Others may argue that writing does not play a big role in determining if one does well in college or not. As I stand by my opinion of writing playing a big role in how well someone does in college, there are many things you still have to do over your years in college.
All throughout my public school education, the majority of my writing consisted of persuasive essays. While I have grown to become confident in my ability to produce this type of writing, when I started college, I felt lost writing research papers. The steps to writing a persuasive essay is so ingrained in my mind that it was hard to break out of that habit when my assignments required a different method. The only significant research paper that I wrote was during junior year of highschool. However, it was only a three and a half page assignment. I definitely felt my confidence waver when writing the research paper for this class. I feel like high school didn’t prepare me enough for the amount of writing that is expected at the college
Writing is fundamental. It is a great aspect of life. Though not everyone is fond of writing and if they are that’s good for them. If you were to ask me to write a paper I guarantee you it won’t get done and if it does it’s not good. As you can tell I don’t have a passion for writing and unfortunately for me, it’s required to write a long essay for school English courses. Now you can imagine how difficult that must be for me if you’re in the same boat as I am. Atop taking an eight-week writing course bloody hell did I have some long rough sleepless nights and oh yes, I did want to cry and say freak this as well as give up. However, throughout this eight-week course I learn so much about my writing and have gained a better comprehension of
Since the beginning of time, I’ve always hated anything that had to do with writing or reading. Writing to me was always a chore, something that I had to do or else I would fail my classes. To add on, writing wasn’t exactly my forte, I was honestly horrendous at writing. You could give me a whole week to do a book report and I still wouldn’t be able to get it right on my 5th try. Even today, I still despise writing, the thought of not knowing what to write always lingered alongside me. I would often find myself sitting alone in my small room, listening to music and not knowing what to write; I would begin typing out a few sentences, then ultimately backspacing every word because it may not be “ good enough”. This whole typing and
Personally, I feel I am a strong writer who is creative and has a strong understanding of the elements of writing. I enjoy writing because it is a way for me to creatively express my thoughts and emotions. Writing is both a stress reliever and a passion for me.
Language is an essential thing in someone’s daily life. Whether it is written or spoken it is our main way of communication with one another because of this someone is taught how to write and speak properly. Speaking is easier than writing because it is something someone has been doing since they were child. This is different for writing. A person is taught how to write when he or she goes to school and improves over time. I started writing papers after I came to the United States in 2014. I have improved on my writing skills since then. English 101 has helped me to write as a college level student. I am now able to organize essays and be able to write them in well structured way.
There are many actions, characteristics, and goals that are set throughout life that help people become literate in something, whether it is in a sport, a school subject, or a hobby. Recognizing any strengths or weaknesses and setting out to make them better are also a large part in one’s journey to becoming who they are today. Subjects such as language arts are especially helpful when doing this and help bring out the voices of writers and readers, young and old. For me, the activities and decisions I have made up to this point, including reading and writing, have made me the person that I am today. Reflecting on this and my personality, strengths, and weaknesses have also contributed to my growth over the years and have pushed me
Students seemed to be reluctant to write because of their lack of confidence and a general fear of making mistakes. From the moment they started writing in class, the emphasis lies on the rules, therefore, moulding the student to understand writing as a set of grammar and punctuation rules rather than a string of ideas aimed at communication. Teachers in ELI view proficient writers as writers who do not make mistakes in writing mechanics. They define good writing as writing that is error free in terms of structure and writing mechanics, “You know student they feel ashamed when you ask them to write one sentence. That’s why I always encourage them to write, write whatever you want write, forget about punctuation, forget about the spelling, forget about everything” (C2, line 55). Whenever students made a mistake, the mistake is usually pointed out due to a grammatical or punctuation error causing the students to view writing as grammar and spelling and generally writing mechanics.
There is a magic in beautiful writing that makes it delightful to read. A good writer’s medium is the written word. He or she is able to weave a story, and capture the essence of an idea with ease. As of now, I am not that kind of writer. Truthfully, I am lost, scatter-brained, and unaware of how to make my point in most cases. I ramble on for sentences before realizing my writing is one big mess. But, I give myself credit for taking time to write, and accepting feedback and criticism with a “thank you”. I listen to the external and internal voices that drive me. Although I am not a remarkable writer, I am willing to learn and improve. As author Stephen King wrote in his memoir On Writing, “While it is impossible to make a competent writer out of a bad writer, and while it’s equally impossible to make a great writer out of a good one, it is possible to make a good writer out of a merely competent one” (142). I am not afraid of putting in work only to fail. In the end, I want to write to be understood, and commit to my writing, regardless of skill.
Unlike the predisposition humans have for language, reading and writing is a learned skill that only our species possess. The written word has the ability to convey messages from one person’s thoughts to another’s. In doing so, each person reads the work with their own theory of mind, giving them an experience specific to them. The individual interpretations of literature make it so that universally one can relate to characters, thus allowing people to connect and care. Whether it be an adopted child who hears a voice or a man who wants to prove something to himself, characterization of realistic people in unrealistic situations grants engaging circumstances for the reader.
Did you know that four out of five students are not proficient writers? In 2011, a nationwide test found that only 24 percent of students in eighth through 12th grades were proficient in writing, and just 3 percent were advanced. Even with technology at our figure tips, only 27 percent of students are able to write well-developed essays with proper language used. Writing is considered not enjoyable by most, just 53 percent of girls like to write and 35 percent of boys and from all those statistics I stated each one has something to do with me being a writer. Like many other people I have trouble writing, trying to create something out of nothing is extremely hard and all I could ever do is stare at a blank page.
