Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Any worker regardless of their level of education or occupation should demonstrate a high level of this trait (About.com, 2013). Acting professionally at workplace makes others think of you as reliable, respectful, and competent. Professionalism, however, can take on many different forms which depend on where you work and the type of job responsibility you have. The professional person should always tell the truth and are upfront about where things stand. Consistency, admitting and correcting the mistakes, and being fair and truthful are all intertwined to the makeup of one’s personal integrity (Octech.edu, 2013). Dishonestly never makes anyone look good, whether it's lying on one's resume or calling in sick. A true professional is upfront, so if you aren't qualified for the job either does not apply for it or send in your application anyway and explain why you'd be perfect for the job in spite of it (About.com, 2013). Also the dishonesty is to lie about being sick, if you need a day off take a personal or vacation day. Professionalism means respect, not misrepresent, discriminate, or harass others. Showing respect and treating all people as if they mattered are good characters that always make difference in workplace. It is expected that there will be disagreements with your co-workers, or even your boss, but do not lose control. No matter how upset you are or how strongly you believe you are right, screaming is not allowed, nor is name calling or door slamming (About.com, 2013). Physical attacks should always be avoided, no matter what. Professional person should calmly explain his or her opinion and be ready to walk away if the other person. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, professionalism is defined as the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. A few pages to the left, efficient is defined as productive of desired effects, especially productive without waste, an efficient worker. A few more pages to the left, cordial is defined as showing or marked by warm and often hearty friendliness, favor, or approval, a cordial welcome.
Professionalism to me is being honest, having a high level of integrity, striving for excellence, respecting others and providing quality care with compassion.
The textbook describes the characteristics of professionalism to be accuracy, courteousness and respectfulness, dependability, flexibility, commitment to lifelong learning, tactfulness accountability, positive attitude, and a professional appearance. In the following paragraphs I will describe five characteristics that I find important in professionalism.
The term professional, like many words and concepts has many different dimensions and the meaning of which has changed over time. One definition might be getting paid to complete a specific set of specialised tasks. Another might be an uncompromising commitment to performing at the highest level at all times. When being professional you aim to give the best you can and that means to commit beyond your own expectations, by looking into the long term and seeing what could go wrong, and make sure different approaches are in place to prevent these. Being professional will always be advantageous and will create a positive repute for either yourself or the business you are supporting. Sometimes your professional behaviour can have an impact on your own work, eg, promotions. It will also increase pride. Therefore professionalism is an all-round beneficial factor.

To be a person who is deemed professional you have to have a sense of leadership. Leadership in the healthcare field means you have to be willing to teach others. You help build and maintain a culture that facilitates professionalism. As a leader you do not participate in workplace pranks. Another important aspect of professionalism is honor and integrity. To have honor and integrity in the workplace you need to be forthcoming with information; and not hold important information for your own benefit. You can admit your own errors. You deal with confidential information discreetly and appropriately. One of the most important attributes regarding professionalism is respect. You have to respect institutional staff and all staff representatives. You have to respect patients rights and dignity and their privacy and confidentiality. A person who is professional has to have caring, compassionate and have communication. You treat the patient as an individual taking into account lifestyle, religious beliefs, and ethnicity. You communicate bad news with sincerity and compassion. You deal with sickness, death, and dying in a professional manner with the patient and the patient’s family members.

The Medical Professionalism Project says professionalism is the basis of medicine's contract with society. It demands placing the interests of patients above those of the physician, setting and maintaining standards of competence and integrity, and providing expert advice to society on matters of health. In my opinion, a person's attitude, values, and behaviors
