Also becoming the first African American Women to run for presidency (biography.com). Shirley Chisholm’s life was influenced by her early life. Their major accomplishments to American society including becoming the first African American congresswoman helped them earn their place in history as an important African American.

Dorothy Dandridge may seem to be like a beautiful and strong African American woman on the outside, but on the inside she held in a lot of pain. Dorothy Dandridge is an actress, singer, and entertainer, who no longer walk this green Earth, but when she did, she made history. Dorothy also had a deeply troubled life and racism didn’t make her life any easier especially when it came to achieving her dreams, but she got through it and during her time, the early 1930’s through the 1960’s, that was saying something. Racism was a lot worse then what it is now, but it made it harder for African Americans to achieve their goals, especially African American women. Dorothy was very worth looking up to now and when she was alive. Dorothy Dandridge is a contribution to African American history because she was the first African American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, how she fought all odds against her, mainly racism, and she made it possible to for other African American women to follow in her footsteps and look up to her as a role model.

Gabby Douglas is true to her beliefs, and her personality shows that she is helpful to the world, and her family and she shows exceptional execution in gymnastics Gabby shows long and beautiful lines specifically in bars, floor, and beam. She is very powerful in the vault, as well. In the text, it states, “I compete for each element with great grace and strength… I will flow beautifully” (Douglas 192). This quotation supports the thesis statement because it shows how Gabby Douglas has long and beautiful lines on the uneven bars. Gabby changed gyms and soon became the state champ in 2004 after only four years of formal training (Gabby Douglas). She continually won first at all of the meets (Gabby Douglas).Gabby’s mom noticed that her talent was becoming too much for the gym she was training at. After watching Shawn Johnson at the 2008 Olympics and being compared to Dominique Dawes, one of the greatest African American gymnast, she knew that the Olympics were a perfect fit for her (Schoeller, Martin). The only issue she had with getting to the Olympics was her current coaching. She needed to go to West Des Moines, Iowa to train Liang Chow. He is an elite gymnastics coach known for coaching Shaun Johnson and many other gymnastics icons. With Chow, Gabby could master the necessary skills to be able to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. Gabby left her home at age 14. Her mom flew with her up to Chow’s Gym and scheduled a meeting with him. There Chow told Gabby that she would be living with a host family for the time she was in Iowa. At the gym that day Missy Parton introduced herself to Gabby as her her host mom (Douglas, Gabrielle). Missy took Gabby home and introduced her to her husband and three girls. Wilma Rudolph is a real definition of a legend. Wilma went through so many hard phases as a child. She suffered from so many diseases that affected the ability of her walking on her left leg. Although Wilma had a disability she somehow overcame it. Later on in life, Wilma became the first American woman to get three gold medals in the Olympics for single events.

Although she won the uneven bars at the Pan American Games, and placed fifth overall, she had fractured her wrist the year before. Also, after the Pan American Games, she moved in with the Parton’s away from home to train with Liang Chow in Des Moines, Iowa but strained her hamstring and injured her hip in July that year. In my opinion, Gabby really stepped up her game at this time. Coach Chow even taught her an Amanar vault in just one day. That’s a round off back handspring onto the vault and two and a half twists with a back tuck off the vault. The harder she worked, the more skills she learned. She competed in so many competitions and at the U.S. National Championships she won gold on bars, silver all around and bronze on floor. That’s a lot of medals at just 17, but it all came down the 2012 Olympic Games. She was part of the “Fierce Five” and together, they won gold. As an individual, Douglas was the only one to compete on all four events, and even became the all-around individual champion of the London 2012 Olympic

Grew up on the Southside of Chicago, earned degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law School, married the man she loved, became the first black woman to be the First Lady of the United States, improved civil rights for people of color, and changed the face of feminism; these are some, but most certainly not all, of the accomplishments of the same woman, Michelle Obama. She is overall an inspiring woman to so many people that have had to struggle in life. She has done everything in her power to help those people lead a life of justice and equality that they otherwise, had been prevented from doing. Michelle Obama has achieved things most others with her upbringing could only dream of. She used her achievements to give those people a better chance. Michelle Obama has become an extremely important figure in America because of her inspiring advocacy for women, girls, and people of color, and she was doing this far before she became the first lady of the United States.

Many people usually spend the majority their time comparing the past and present presidents against each other. They always talk about the things the presidents have accomplished leaving behind a great legacy, but they never consider the great women behind the man. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama are both very different accomplished First Ladies.

Admittedly, Hilary Clinton has spoken around the world about the challenges that women have faced. However, it is the continued struggle of American women that inspires and fuels her passion and fight for equality in this male-dominated culture. Also, while married to bill Clinton who was actively involved in women’s right, Hilary advocated for a standard of equality that embrace all colors and cultures. .
