The artwork I chose for this discussion is Pablo Picasso’s oil painting, The Kiss. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain in 1881 and passed away on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France. Pablo’s love for drawing started at a young age. His passion was so strong he lost all desire to complete schoolwork. At the age of young age of fourteen, Picasso was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona and by sixteen owned his owned studio. Pablo went through certain periods where he incorporated a specific color that dominated in each of his paintings. From 1901 – 1904, Picasso went through his “Blue Period” while the years of 1905 – 1907 were called his “Rose Period. The Kiss was produced in 1969 during Picasso’s later works and the time where his obsession with couples became evident. This special oil on canvas painting of a couple can be viewed on display in Paris at the Picasso Museum.
I discovered Pablo Picasso’s The Kiss while looking online for an artwork to discuss. I do not know a wide variety of different

Both artists used oil on canvas and clearly depict their artwork with a use of detailed lines to grasp the viewers’ attention. The audience can easily notice the focal point in each artwork. In El Sol Asombra the house is painted bigger than everything else and the bright yellow grasps the spectator’s attention. Picasso used the same skill by making the male and female the center of attention. Picasso’s social angle lies in in the theme of gender and sexuality. The Kiss reveals a strong sexual tension between an elderly man and a younger woman. “This late painting… is an animal kiss, where sex and death are inexorably entwined through fear and hunger. These kisses, and the use of tongues, are unique in the history of representation.” (miamirali.org) Picasso painting a fierce moment shared between two people illustrates a sexual drive humans
Both of these paintings show the love and desire to hold on to ones heritage and family traditions which is extremely important in Hispanic families. Both with vivid colors and images. In Kahlo’s “Self Portrait on the Border Line Between Mexico and the United States”, even though she is a Mexican woman living in a non-Mexican country, she is able to accept both sides and hold on to her own Mexican heritage and culture which it seems she preferred. In Garza’s “Camas Para Sueños”(Beds for Dreams), Garza is showing the love and closeness she had with her sister and how her mother allowed them to dream and reach after those dreams as they kept
This piece is also an abstract form of art and more modern the color is red and has a feeling of happiness and joy and you have the urge to feel love just by seeing it so large and up front. “LOVE” has always been placed out in the open demanding attention from a lot of people to see. “The Kiss” is more of a classic form of art and has been placed in more private areas. Although it has a distressing grey color “The Kiss” has more depth; the feeling of intimacy is strong and makes a statement.
In this essay, I will be discussing how two famous artists from different times and cultures have created aesthetic qualities in artworks, communicated ideas and developed styles. Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso have been chosen to express two very different art styles and how both artists use elements and principles to create a distinct quality artwork. Although Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso come from different parts of the world and have different cultural backgrounds, both artists have practiced and explored portraiture as a way of making art.
The painting shows five women naked with flat figures, disintegrated planes and faces, inspired by African masks. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in goodwill of a level two-dimensional picture of a plane.
I say this because I said that Picasso’s had the woman making the girl big. In Velazquez’s the girl has the women also making her the center point. She couldn’t be though if the she didn’t have the women helping her and “making” her. I say this because she looks like she has a lot of things going on just sitting down and she couldn’t do everything by herself so to look good she needs the helpers or women. This is why I think that these two paintings look similar in this topic and also could look different.Contrasting:The second thing that I think is different about these two paintings is that the girl in Picasso’s painting is living in poverty and she looks pretty when she is cleaned up. In Velazquez’s the girl is living a lush life and has servants doing her work and she is just a young girl. The reason I say this is because since Velazquez was the king’s painter he only painted things that looked expensive for the king and his family to see. In Picasso’s case he was just a really good painter and he painted things that everybody who had practically nothing could
There are very few things that appreciate with time. Many people love to bank on a rookie baseball player, in hopes his card will be worth thousands. Many invest in land, praying they hit a gold mine like land in Frisco or Prosper, Texas. One of these rare items is art. Art is a luxury, that many high income people love to invest in. Pablo Picasso’s art is some of the most if not the most prominent, pieces of artwork in the world. Picasso was a trendsetter of sorts, helping start many movements including introducing the idea of a collage in his later paintings. Picasso had a habit of drawing his lovers in his paintings. For some of his mistresses, he created lots of art with them as the main subjects of the paintings, as those were the stronger influences. Many of his paintings were centered around one of his mistresses, Marie-Therese Walter. Picasso met the 17-year-old Walter while he was married to his wife, Olga Khokhlova. Throughout their relationship, which spanned nine years, she was the centerpiece of his work. Depending on the depiction of the subject, Picasso showed his emotion toward Walter. The painting, ‘Seated Woman’ of Walter by Picasso portrays a unique style, a powerful use of colors, and a different view of Walter in comparison to paintings of his other mistresses.
It is a cheerful, acrylic painting created using bold and bright colors made to contrast one another. Torres used unity and variety with a selection of lines, shapes, and colors. When you first view the painting, you will notice the directional forces that cause your eyes to view the painting in a particular order. Staring at the front center, the eyes will follow the path of lines that lead your eyes over the entire painting. When you take a closer look at the piece, you will begin to notice a repetition of certain colors and shapes. The painting is also asymmetrically balanced. In my opinion, the most important Principle of Design used for this piece is contrast. The figure of the woman in the front is significantly contrasted from the rest of the painting, and she is made to be the focal point. This piece is representational artwork. It depicts the appearance of a woman and includes subjects from the everyday world.
Pablo Picasso was apart of many different types of art in his life as an artist. He was apart of the blue period, where the paintings were depressing or morbid, the rose period, where the paintings were cheery and happy, along with the crystal period, where the paintings were a distinct shape. Then around 1921 he married his first wife and had a son named paul, then again in 1935 he remarried again and had another child. He remarried 2 other times and had 2 more kids,Pablo Picasso died on April 8th 1973 but his fame will live throughout history. Some of his best work was done during World War 1 and World War 2, where he created works such as The Parade, Guernica, Chicago Picasso and many more. His works can be found in places like the Museum of Modern Art, and museums all over france. In conclusion Pablo Picasso is a very famous artist that was born into an artistic family, and despite a traumatic experience early on, he still continued to pursue his interest in
These two paintings created in different time periods and different parts of the world have more in common than one might imagine. “The Kiss” was acclaimed as a masterpiece when it was first displayed in Paris, France in 1877, and today it is one of the most well-known pieces of sculpture. Rodin managed to create a
There is little sign of life about the man, his shoulders are bony and his pose cramped, as if to show that he finds no ease in the world around him. In 1905 close to the ending of his Blue Period Picasso decided to move back to Paris. It was here that he met Fernande Oliver and eventually fell in love with her. Picasso’s paintings took a drastic change. He went from painting beggars and outcast to happy, healthy circus performers and families. It was obvious that Picasso’s first love had a tremendous effect on his art. Picasso’s paintings no longer consisted of blue tones but instead took on more delicate rose tones. Fernande Oliver reflected his work and his happiness. One of Picasso’s best works linked his Blue and Rose Period was The Frugal Repast. The painting had a beautiful healthy looking woman being embraced by a long dirty, hungry man. Picasso felt this way about Fernande Oliver. He pictured himself as a poverty stricken man who was lucky enough to be with a beautiful woman. From the time 1905 to 1906 Picasso entered the Rose Period. Subtle pinks and grays with even brighter tones were the colors Picasso used. Some people also believed the warm tones of this period were influence by Picasso’s habit of smoking opium (Ripley 101). Picasso was fascinated with clowns, acrobats, and other families of the
The medium of this piece, as stated, is oil on canvas. Picasso takes no hesitation in using obvious and crude brush strokes to make a gesture against the idealism of classical art. This is a scene of every day life with a woman casually
Picasso was working on Gertrude’s portrait (Fig. 2) at the time he and Matisse first met. The sensation Matisse’s painting created, made it difficult for Picasso to
The Kiss is a work that was painted by the Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt, between the years 1907 and 1908. Klimt utilizes his personal experiences and life changes as his inspiration for the creation of perhaps his most famous work yet. He links modernity and eroticism at the center of his work, the couple’s embrace. This embrace is a quintessential expression of one of the deepest passions known to mankind, sensual love. Klimt’s color choices, use of depth, line, and balance, are all techniques that contribute to the message he is trying to convey. This couple’s love radiates passion at its strongest, the love between man and woman, and the disconnect from reality they experience as they embrace.
From the time periods of late1904 to early 1906, Pablo Picasso, one of the most renowned oil painters in history, explored the theme of Saltimbanques upon his canvas medium during his famous Rose Period. Previously, Picasso suffered from depression, which resulted in the era known as the Blue Period, but in 1904, Picasso met Fernande Olivier, who some speculate was the transition from his Blue Period to Rose Period. During the Rose Period, Picasso’s used of warm color oil paints, primarily pink, highlighted the artistic style of Saltimbanques as he depicted circus performers, harlequins, and acrobats that he observed when living in France. For much of his artwork, “Picasso’s eye would also require the stimulus of a visual experience,” and for him, the idea of being visually stimulated by circuses, caught his attention. In order to gather inspiration, Picasso would frequently visit the Cirque Médrano in Montmartre so that both his mind and eyes could be visually stimulated. As his infatuation with Saltimbanques increased, he dedicated a series to them and in 1905, he created his most famous painting of the Rose Period “Family of Saltimbanques.” This painting, standing at 7x8 ft, was considered to be the biggest painting ever produced by Picasso. Using these influences, Picasso was able to create his most impressive works of the Rose Period, “Family of Saltimbanques.”
Girl before a Mirror, an oil on canvas painting by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, shows two sides of a girl; one which is illustrated with a dark tone and one with a vibrant colorful tone. This painting is bright; colors are at full intensity and are arranged next to their complements, producing a visual relationship between shape and form. Forms are used to draw the viewer’s eye across the canvas where circular shapes, repeating throughout the work, are compensated by the pattern of diagonal lines of the background. The viewer observes the girl’s profile and full frontal image, looking into a mirror and noticing a different image of herself. In order to achieve this effect, Picasso uses a range of formal elements that highlight the
