According to the National Institute for Mental Health, In the Unites States has eleven suicides attempts a day. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in teenagers. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, have people wondering how it could have gone wrong for the “two star-crossed.” As the story unfolds, it is evident many characters play a vital role in the events that lead to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The characters to blame are Romeo, Juliet, The Nurse, Friar, and the families.
One person responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Juliet Capulet. Juliet is responsible for the deaths because she was defiant when spoken to and refused to stop and listen. Juliet is the thirteen-year-old daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. Upon falling in love with Romeo Juliet grows up rapidly. The author states, “Now, by Saint Peter’s Church and Peter too, he shall not make me there a joyful bride. I wonder at this haste, that I must wed Ere he, that should be husband, comes to woo. I pray you, tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet. And when I do, I swear It shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris. ” Juliet’s defiant way makes her responsible for the deaths because instead of doing what her parents told her to do she chooses to act rebellious. Getting herself in a situation that was too complex for a naive teenager to escape. Juliet let Romeo’s charm persuade her knowing it was wrong and acted on impulse instead of using common sense.
