President Abraham Lincoln was the leader of the United States for five years, yet he is often only remembered for leading the Union to victory in the Civil War and freeing the slaves in the process. These accomplishments go together and it is easy to assume part of, if not the entire reason for war was to end slavery. He is credited with freeing the slaves because of his emancipation proclamation. This eventually brings and end to the institution, but should we really credit this all to Lincoln? Many argue that there was no other president that took office in more difficult times that Abraham Lincoln did. The day he was elected president a large part of the South had decided to secede as soon as they found out he has become president. To top it off, he lacked support from the North as well. Making his presidency difficult since the beginning.

Each president of the United States of America has left a legacy, some more notable than others. I believe Abraham Lincoln was the best American president. A Lot of people say that “anybody can grow up to be a President.” But not anybody is cut out to be a President. It takes a person to be tough, smart, active, positive, compassionate and driven, to run for the job. It takes talent, character, and integrity, to be able to withstand the pressures of this Herculean task.

Abraham Lincoln showed he was very intent on saving the union of the United States with quotes like "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union". Lincoln said in his inaugural address, on March 4, 1861, that "it was his duty to maintain the Union." Lincoln saved the union by fighting against the confederacy, while some presidents would've let them secede. Lincoln did everything in his power to preserve the union and it worked, his determination was admirable.

Abraham Lincoln was a very ambitious man who was always trying to get new information, or learn some type of new skill. Even when Lincoln was young he had an urge to learn. He moved to Illinois in 1830, where he obtained several jobs that taught him a strong work ethic. Later on he moved to New Salem where he became a businessman, and gained many skills that he would use throughout his life as a political leader. After moving to Springfield, Lincoln’s political career began to take shape. Living on the frontier taught Lincoln a lot, he learned many skills, and different ways to interact with people. In chapter eight of the book Abraham Lincoln’s political legacy is looked at. It goes in depth on how during the Reconstruction, the republican party essentially ruined the South for twelve years by instituting puppet governments that constantly raised taxes but provided very few public benefits (7). This chapter talks also talks about how the republican party stole money from the raised taxes. It seems like the main goal for the government at this point was to become an empire under Abraham Lincoln and his business supporters. “Lincoln’s own Reconstruction ideas made a mockery of democracy (227). “He believed that at least 10 percent of the southern population probably had Unionist sympathies, and he wanted representatives of that group to be put into place by the Republican Party as the governors, mayors, and local public officials of the Southern states after the war” (227). Abraham Lincoln seems like he is trying to get all the power he can by taking control of the south and making them do certain duties after the war is over. Abraham Lincoln was born in the year 1809 on February 12th in the town of Hardin County, Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. Growing up Lincoln had no proper education, consequently he read books and educated himself. During Lincoln’s young adult years, he worked a various number of jobs as a shopkeeper, surveyor, and a postmaster. In 1832, Lincoln became a captain of the Hawk War against the Native Americans. Shortly after the war was over, he began his political career and was elected to the Illinois state legislature in 1834. It was also around this time that Lincoln decided to practice law and was admitted to the state bar in 1837. In 1828 Abe was 19. He poled a flatboat down a river he saw African Americans being sold. Abe didn’t like it at all. Abe settled at New Salem Illinois. He was hired to run a general store. Abe was so honest if he accidentally over charged someone very little money he would run miles to give it back. One time the store owner set up a wrestling match. Against the leader of rowdy gang, jack Armstrong. Abe agreed to wrestle were not sure if he won or not a lot of people had different opinions. Jack and Abe became close friends for years when Jack so his strength. Abraham Lincoln worked to earn money by doing farm work. When some people saw him reading while working they thought he was lazy but he just loved books. When Abe got older he studied law without a teacher. Abraham Lincoln became a lawyer. He was interested in politics. So people said that he should run for public office he ran for Senate, Congress then the most important one of all, President. Abraham Lincoln the 16th president. Abraham Lincoln had to do a lot while he was president he had to help with the civil war during the civil war he gave a speech called the Gettysburg Address. After the rebels won the war Abraham Lincoln had to help make the 13 colonies unite with the United States. The time period was called reconstruction.
