Humans often take pride in their ability to think freely and act independently. However, many actions that we perform and certain ways we behave in society are often quickly overlooked and not questioned. We often do not understand why we perform certain tasks or adhere to certain rules. However, we still paradoxically pride ourselves in our freedom. By analyzing the sociological perspective, we can understand how much of a role society often plays in our actions and behavior as individuals in society. Certainly, the sociological perspective can allow us to analyze events in the movie The Long Walk Home more closely. The sociological perspective can allow us to understand how the actions of the characters are often chained and their behaviors controlled by society, through using the theories of social location, social control, and social stratification. The sociological perspective can also allow us to understand why these characters strangely adhered to these forms of oppressive control and often resisted change, through using role theory and the sociology of knowledge. Lastly, the sociological perspective will allow us to understand how actors can break free of these bindings, through using an interpretive analysis and applying concepts such as freedom, ecstasy, and bad faith. Adversities are a natural part of an individual’s journey through life, but what is it that empowers us to persist through such hardship despite feelings we have reached the end of our capacities? Perseverance. Perseverance is the foundation that enables individuals to push through challenging situations. Both the novel, Walking Home by Eric Walters and the novel The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis are two works of literature that prove how perseverance is the key foundation for individuals to pass barriers set in their way. Muchoki and Parvana are characters who both persevere through family trauma that hits their household, they are able to preserve getting over the discriminatory mental barriers within their damaged countries and additionally are able to persevere through the physical agony faced upon them in their journey.
Social status often establishes one 's credibility and integrity within a society. The power that social status has, encourages people to heavily focus on it. With this focus on social status ever pressing, one’s identity often gets intertwined with and reliant on their place in the hierarchy of society. Throughout life, one is faced with many experiences, and how one deals with those experience shapes one’s life. Laurie Channer’s Las Mantillas and Margaret Atwood’s It is Dangerous to Read Newspapers share the same theme of action versus inaction, however they define it from opposing perspectives. Action and inaction are complete opposites thus leading to completely different results. Whether taking action or remaining passive, strong feelings occur that can impact one’s life. Distance is also a huge factor in whether a person takes action or not, which is explored in both texts. While Channer’s Las Mantillas emphasizes the positive impact taking action has on an individual and society and Atwood’s It is Dangerous to Read Newspapers critiques the effects of inactivity, both agree that when faced with injustice it is vital to take action for one’s beliefs.
Upon watching the movie “The Hunger Games” from a sociological perspective, I learned that many of the things that we have gone over in this online sociology course were incorporated heavily into what is perhaps one of my personal favorite movies of all time. Things like social status, culture, heritage, gender, and more were all used throughout the film in order to portray a realistic and believable setting for the viewer from a social perspective. Probably the most important sociological themes explored in this movie were the struggle to maintain a high ranking social status amongst surrounding humans, the pre-perceived idea of what you were and weren’t allowed to do legally speaking based on your district, and most importantly, how humans can ultimately make life or death decisions based on the value or benefit of a certain person to the group.
In “Walking and the Suburbanized Psyche,” the author, Rebecca Solnit, argues that the development of suburbanization has been the primary problem as to why our modern society continues to devalue the significance and impact of walking. Suburbanization hasn’t only changed the way we travel from one place to another, but it has also changed the way we communicate amongst each other and with ourselves. Walking is looked down upon and has been seen as a symbol of low status. This has led people to exterminate the use of walking in their daily lives. However, even if someone would like to walk to their destination they can’t due to the fact that places are shaping their roads to accommodate to the excess use of cars. I agree with Solnit that walking has a positive impact towards our bodies, our world, and our imagination.

In Six Degrees of Separation, Paul forces his way into the lives of upper class white families and reveals the hegemonic social stratifications that dominate their lives. The literary point of view, how the story is revealed, is significantly different in the film adaptation to concentrate on the systemic ways people create relationships with each other and how race, gender, sexuality, and class actively drive the ways people are able to exist.
While it may be tempting to leave society in order to pursue one’s dreams, severing the ties with those whom one knows can result in a world of chaos and instability. By doing this, the movie revolves around three themes which are backed by theories and models in sociology which include opportunity, explained by the Status Theory, conflict, explained by Karl Max and Max Weber, and interaction, represented by the Dramaturgical Model.
Ursula LeGuin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” are two thought provoking works that speculate the future of human societies. Both authors portray their stories in very different but also similar ways that can also connect to society today as a whole. We do experience similar pains in our society. However, we do not or may not pay attention to it. Societies’ rules exist to balance conflicting human interests and keep order. Nonetheless, it should not cradle ones potential to grow and become more productive members of society.
In this essay, I will use Mills’ conception of the sociological imagination to analyze my own biography. Initially, I will explain what Mills means by the sociological imagination and explain his distinction between personal troubles and public issues. Next, I will use my sociological imagination to reflect on my personal biography. I will take an issue, incident, or circumstance from my own experience and demonstrate how it could be understood as a product of social and historical forces. I will use Mills’ conception of personal troubles and public issues to explain my own biographical detail socially. Lastly, I will explain the interplay between personal troubles and public issues.

Media publications are a great expression of human trends and ideas. Weather movies or music, they all have a societal impact and at least allude to trends of sociology theorists. This is abundantly true in the film V for vendetta. There is a preexisting novel which also made an impact in that culture and it followed the same trends, but the film is being used because of its greater relevance to the modern era of America. The film depicts a post-apocalyptic world that has symbolism and story lines that run with modern events. These depictions can be more readily understood within the scope of Max Weber’s sociological insight and theory more specifically about his understanding on the modern world and it bureaucratization.
