The Lord Of The Flies: Film Analysis

When scenes from William Golding’s novel, The Lord of the Flies, have been deleted, the story becomes packed with nonstop fascination. Because The Lord of the Flies is way too long, cuts need to be made. William Golding incorporates many scenes into the book that are unnecessary; therefore, several scenes are to be deleted from the book to bring out the overall importance of the story. However, there are certain scenes that are to be left alone to preserve the meaning of the book about how society falls apart without adults.

How many books have been written about shipwrecks? Now out of those how many have had all the main characters under the age of twenty? Not many. This is precisely what happens in the riveting novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. Although this is an unbelievable work, it is too long. There are many important parts that need to stay, however. Three of these are when Simon is talking with the Lord of the Flies, when Piggy is killed, and when the boys are rescued.

A bunch of boys, some being young, the oldest being around 14, have been stranded on an island with no one knowing where they are. They have to try their best to survive and get rescued so they can get off the island. But then again, they are boys and not everyone gets along, no matter how bad the situation. The boys in the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding portrays this. With all of the boys getting along, somewhat, and being on the same page, how did the situation get so bad? How could mainly three boys make decisions so bad it would lead to violence? Should not their priorities be the same, to get off the island?

Millions of years ago, humans were primitive beings. They were savage and uncivilized, but they couldn’t help it. These were the instincts that were ingrained in their brains, the instincts that kept them alive. These instincts are still inside us today, suppressed by the rules put in place by society. In William Golding’s book, The Lord of the Flies, Golding examines the conflict between these two forces in a life-or-death situation. This is modeled by various examples of symbolism and allegories throughout the book. Some of the more notable examples include, the conflict between Jack and Ralph, the conch and the beast’s shifting power, and the climax of Piggy’s death and the destruction of the conch.

Despite the progression of civilization and society's attempts to suppress man's darker side, in this book William Golding's Lord of the Flies, seemingly innocent schoolboys evolve into bloodthirsty savages as the evil within them emerges. Their regression into savagery by an intensifying fear of evil. The graphic consequence of the boy’s unrestrained savagery, and also emphasized by an external war. This also explores mankind's potential for evil. This has brought up a question in which are the victim the creators of their own circumstance?

The novel, Lord of The Flies written by William Golding is about a group of boys who were stranded on a deserted island after the plane they were on crashed. The story plot is based on their time and experiences on the island. Eventually, the book was produced into a movie in 1963. The book and movie have many similarities and few noticeable differences. The film definitely stuck to the original plot of the novel.

Cody Curtis is one of the main characters followed throughout the film “How to Die in Oregon”, where throughout her life she worked with animals in the country and grew up with the idea of not letting animals suffer before they died. We learn that Cody suffers from reoccurring cancer, and would rather choose to leave this world when she is feeling better and can communicate with her family rather than waiting till she is in so much pain or is so sick that she is not able to communicate with her family members. For Cody, she knows that the day where she stops enjoying most things in her life and she feels like a burden is the chosen day of her death. A big reason why Cody chose physician aid-in-dying is the fact the patient has complete control over their own death. This allows for the patient to know when it will happen and that they have the choice of date, allowing for the patient to focus on the good times and what is important to them rather than worrying about when they are going to die. This was very important to Cody, since she did not want to spend time worrying about her death and being a burden to her family, but rather spend good times with them and die at a point in time where they will remember those good times rather than times where she is suffering. Throughout the film, Cody was always for physician aid-in-dying, however at points she believes that if she goes through with it she will be a coward. Artistically speaking, this film is beautiful. There was a lot of thought put into every detail from the actors to the camera shots. The film seems to flow in beautiful manner from one scene to the next. One piece of art in the film is the use of symbols. Each symbol is delicately placed in order to make sense to any viewers that can pick up on them. One symbol is Nick’s obsession with his Peace Lily. It represents his obsession with the job. It is the only other thing he cares for because its needs are simple and by-the-books. When he breaks it, it is supposed to symbolize his change of heart; that somebody has taken the place of the lily. Another symbol in the film is the number 3. There are 3 murders that take place before people believe Nicholas. There are 3 people Nick tries to talk to in order to get out of being sent to Sanford. Many lines are repeated 3 times over. This could be in reference to fairytales always using the number 3, since this plot seems far-fetched like a fairytale. However, it could also be in reference to the trilogy of films that Wright and Pegg made together. Then, there is the swan symbol. Swans typically symbolize grace, beauty, and peace. In the film, though, the swans symbolize an overbearing distraction. Nicholas is constantly surrounded by them in the hotel he stays at, which is rightly called ‘The Swan Hotel’. He is also charged with the task of catching an escaped swan. This causes him to miss many chances to catch the perpetrators of

The story of Lord of the Flies illustrates how William Golding perceived the fundamental nature of human beings away from civilization. Golding clearly leans towards the style of government and society that philosopher Thomas Hobbes portrayed. This is clear through many aspects of the book including the violent actions of the boys on the island, the success of Jack’s “tribe”, and limited resources on the island resulting in stealing. For instance, when the members of Jack’s tribe rolled a large rock down a cliff resulting in the death of Piggy. After living on the island for some time now, the boys weren’t told what was right and what was wrong. Furthermore, Piggy was considered an enemy so they killed him out of human nature. Golding shows that he believes humans are flawed in morality and are naturally bad unless controlled which coincides with the State of Nature that Hobbes philosophized. Another violent action was the killing of Simon in which he was mistaken for the monster in the cave. The boys killed Simon out of fear, but also in a violent mentality in which they kill whatever poses a threat. The success of Jack’s tribe which involved stealing, hunting, and savage acts revealed the natural instinct of human where dictatorship rules. At first, everyone worked together and there was enough food for everyone. Imagine a world where everyone got along without conflicts. Would that be possible in the world as it is now or would everyone's inner darkness and greed come out? In Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad it was not possible. In Lord of the Flies, many boys are stranded on an island, alone. At first, they decide to work together but as the novel went on, it became clear that they were going to split up. And then in the frame tale Heart of Darkness, Marlow tells a story about a character named Kurtz' obsessions with ivory. Throughout both novels, the authors have the audience questioning whether the true nature of humans is good or bad. Even though it could be argued otherwise, Golding and Conrad use literary devices to show that the true nature of humans is essentially bad.

Thought-provoking books have underlying themes that may remain with the reader. William Golding’s Lord of The Flies is a perfect example of this. This novel tells the story of a group of British schoolboys that become stranded on a deserted island. The boys are unharmed but soon realize that they are without any adult supervision and will have to rely on themselves and each other for survival. The boys react in different ways, causing anarchy to break loose. Golding’s most significant message is that during stressful situations, man’s need for civilization becomes greater and, without it, chaos erupts.

William Golding's bias towards society due to World War II influences the novel Lord of the Flies to show the state of man to be barbaric and uncivil. Without societies influence on man's natural state of nature, man can turn to savagery. Jack uses his dominance over the boys to gain on his personal obsession of killing while Ralph uses his lesser dominance for the greater good, thus, causing a competition between Ralph and Jack in a struggle for power despite their unspoken bond.

The naïve, inexperienced boys have found themselves dropped into a situation that is vastly unknown with no social institutions or rules to ground them. Thus, they tried to mimic the world that they knew using only what they thought would reflect the adult world accurately. This attempt comes as no surprise because as human beings, we crave a structure to everyday life. When we are in school we have a set schedule and set of rules that make it easy to think of other things, and to introduce new ideas that affect us individually instead of as a community. When that structure is taken away, we often see repercussions that may seem surprising. In the novel Lord of the Flies, the only structure that these children had has been taken away leaving only the remnants of what they think is right. The author William Golding showed the consistent need for social order numerous times throughout the novel ‘Lord of the flies’. Though they crave the leadership and skills to survive, the children’s own pubescent emotions get in the way of survival.

In William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies, the reader is exposed to an island of boys and what happens to them slowly over the course of the book. There is a theme of the constant power struggle between the boys civilization and their inner savagery. This is shown through the boys as their time on the island grows greater and greater, especially through an individual named Jack Merridew.
