In 1861, a Civil War broke out in the United States when the South declared their independence from the Union. There is a great amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. However, what most people don’t understand, is that most of the events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery. Slavery was the core of the North and South’s conflict, which led to a very vicious feud.

The Civil War was the war that divided the young American nation into two opposing sides. One side being the North, also called the Union, and the second side being the South, also called the Confederacy. The root cause of why the South seceded from the Union has been debated and argued since the beginning of the war in 1861. Most people argue that the argument, between the North and the South, over slavery was the main reason why the South left the Union. However, the issue has to be more complex than just the issue with slavery. The root cause of the of the South secession from the Union was a combination of the South’s aggravation and fear over their dependence on the North for their economic prosperity and their dependence on slavery for a highly profitable economy.

The causes of the Civil War were complex and have been controversial since the country began. Some causes include; states’ rights, economics, and slavery. The most recognizable and popular cause is slavery. The freeing of the slaves was an important moral issue at the time and one of the greatest causes of the civil war. "It was only by carefully avoiding the moral issue involved in slavery that Northerners and Southerners could meet on any common ground." (Goldston, 79). The time came in which our great country would finally address the moral issue of slavery. Although there are many different causes to the American Civil War, the main cause was slavery because other causes are rooted in the issue of slavery.

There has been several debates on the causes of the American Civil War. Many have stated that slavery was the primary cause for the Civil War. Some historians have argued that there were other causes of the Civil War. The one thing that all historians agreed upon was the division between the North (known as the Union) and the South (known as the Confederacy) that escalated on the soil of the United States of America (In Stampp, 1965). The battle between the two states is what created the “American Civil War.” The American Civil War started as a result of many years of differences and debates between the Union and the Confederacy. By definition, the Civil War can be described as a war between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America as the result of a long-lasting controversy over slavery. (Give Me Liberty!) Though the dispute over slavery did have a great effect on the start of the civil war, many more specific events created tension between the two sides. The tension created by multiple situations overall led to the idea of succession in the South, which was why war was declared. Three of the main situations that created tension between the Union and Confederacy were the outcome of a court case involving a slave named Dred scott, The election of Abraham Lincoln, and the differences in the economy and plans of the North and the South. These events created pressure between the Union and the Confederacy, causing the South to attempt to succeed, which overall sparked the beginning of what we know of today as the Civil War.

The Civil War was a big part in our history and had a major impact on the way we live today. It affected our whole countries ideas and eventually made us united. Railroads were beginning to become a huge deal in the North as a mean to transport goods more quickly. Frederick Douglas was a black activist fighting for anti-slavery and equal rights as stated in the constitution. The causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were politics, economics, and slavery.

In my opinion, there were many factors leading up to the Civil War, however in my opinion, the biggest argument was that slavery was the major reason for the CIvil War. Every aspect of the political and social environment that preceded the Civil War was a direct result of slavery.

Although Henry Clay devised makeshift solutions such as the Missouri Compromise and temporarily tabled the strife within the expanding nation, even such a great compromiser could not piece together a nation that was fundamentally divided. In this turbulent time, Lincoln, Douglass, and the state of Mississippi all gave distinct perspectives on why the war was fought with some overlapping rationales.
