Our world changes day by day. Humans grow, evolve, and adjust to the modern world. As our world advances, our language and terminology progresses along with it. A word that has changed completely in definition is “gay”, it has two completely different meanings. Today “gay” means, “of, relating to, or exhibiting sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one's own sex; homosexual” (The Definition of Gay). and in the 12th century “gay” meant “happy or carefree” (How Gay) How did the definition of this word change so greatly over the years?
Gay came about in the 12th century, with the meaning of “carefree”, “joyful”, or “bright and showy” (How Gay).“The word is first recorded in English c.1325, with the meaning of beautiful, in a poem titled Blow, Northerne Wind, which appears in the manuscript British Library MS Harley 2253.” “The English word comes from the French gai, but where this French word comes from is uncertain” (Word Origins.org.). The first meaning of gay was once meant to have a meaning of happiness. People woke up hoping to have a “gay” day.
By the 17th century “gay” started to change from meaning bright and showy to mean “immorality”. “By the mid 17th century, according to an Oxford dictionary definition at the time, the meaning of the word had changed to mean “addicted to pleasures and dissipations. Often euphemistically: Of loose and immoral life” (How Gay). In the span of five - hundred years this word began to greatly change from
Though same-sex relationships have been a prominent aspect of many cultures almost since the beginning of time, there has historically been a significant taboo surrounding the phenomenon in the Western world. "From the Fourteenth Century on, Western Europe was gripped by a rabid and obsessive negative preoccupation with homosexuality as the most horrible of sins" (Boswell 262). The majority of people did not understand or accept the idea, and consequentially did not have an appropriate way of talking about it. Over the years, as various cultures identified and even implemented practices currently associated with homosexuality, there arose a need for common terminology. Until the eighteenth century, it was referred to through the practices
The meaning gay has changed tremendously over time. In the past, the term gay was not used as frequently and as freely as it is used today. The term originated from the Old French and dates back to the 1600s, “Deriving ultimately from Germanic source” (Wikipedia). The word means “Joyful, carefree, bright and showy” (Wikipedia). Gay also means to be “Addicted to social pleasure and dissipations,” as a noun “of a person:
Few people today know the true meaning of the word gay. Even fewer use it in its original context. To be gay was once a common and positive expression. When describing one’s mood, it meant that they were feeling lively and carefree. Gay could even be used to describe something that was “brightly colored” or “showy” (Merriam Webster, “Gay”). No one thought twice about it when people said they were “feeling gay” or “the sunset was gay.” However, this word is rarely used in that context in today’s society. Instead, it has taken on a completely different meaning and connotation. While gay had become something of a euphemism for prostitutes and their clients throughout the 19th century, it was ever changing. This change was gradual and began in the 1920s and 1930s. By this time, a “gay man” was no longer just a man that was promiscuous with women, but also one who was
In “The Myth of Homosexuality” by Christine Downing, there is the discussion of homosexuality and its meaning over the years. Downing begins the article by stating how a myth has classified women-on-women and men-on-men relationships to fall under the same term of homosexuality, but there is much deeper understanding to it than that. The classification under one word has caused a lot of shaping concerning how they are viewed or how they view themselves. In order to look past the surface of what defines the myth, Downing states that we must start with the culture’s myth and it’s origin.
The problem of sexuality emerged in the 19th century as biological, social, psychological and moral concern. Homosexual was first defined as a kind person and later changed. With the change of definition of homosexuality led to social anxieties from the threat of
“You’re gay,” a term now used so freely to not only insult peers but to take a stab at the homosexual community. But was this homosexual stigma always prevalent in history? Over two thousand years ago, the ancient Roman state ruled most of the known world. During those five hundred years, emperors rose to power and fell, a republic formed and was destroyed but what perhaps is one the most important aspects of Roman society is free love.
Gays/lesbians are people who prefer same sex relationships. During the time period or even before then, gays weren’t widely accepted. A lot of people didn’t accept gays therefore men had to hide their insecurities every time in fear that they’d be ostracized. Because of the baby boomers, support of gays right increased throughout the years as their biggest reason was because they now know someone who is gay or lesbian, closely followed by a belief that they have become more open to the idea or because they have gotten older.
Originating all the way back to the 12th century of England, “gay” meant happy, carefree or joyful. Fast forward to the 21th century and the definition was altered to mean homosexuals and dumb

Alan Ma Eng (111) – 6377 Critical Response Essay A variety of words, such as queer and gay has had an alternating definition that’s been changed by society, in a way we wish to use it. The article, “Queer Evolution,” was written by Martha Irvine, a journalist at The Associated Press. She believes that the definition of “queer” has been socially accepted to “describe any sexual orientation beyond straight,” despite its history as a derogatory term. Although the author provides some good points, she lacks the discussion of the history of the word queer and detailed statistics to prove her quotations to be true.
To properly begin the exploration of the “gay gene” theory, we must first begin at the conception and explain what it first meant to society and how it was first postulated to function.
Heterosexuality is defined as sexual feeling or behavior directed toward a person or persons of the opposite sex. However, in the early nineteenth century, from 1820 to 1860 the heterosexual did not exist, love back then was represented by “purity” and “romance” and not by lust. The term heterosexuality was developed in the late nineteenth century to denote a universal sexual and cultural norm even though human sexuality was known about for a long time. Human sexuality has been changing throughout history, since early investigations "Contrary to our usual assumption, past Americans and other peoples named, perceived, and socially organized the bodies, lusts, and
Homosexuality is sexual attraction to people of one’s own sex. The term was first used by Karl-Maria Kertbeny in a pamphlet arguing against Prussian anti-sodomy law in 1869 but it was in 1886 that Richard von Krafft-Ebing used the term homosexual and heterosexual in his book Psychopathia Sexualis that term became a widely accepted term for sexual orientation. The idea increasingly began to be understood as opposite to heterosexuality (sexual attraction exclusively to the other sex) and male homosexuality was associated to femininity and cultivated pederasty.
While the concept of homosexuality did not exist in the United States, changes were happening in Europe with the issue. Right around the 1870's affectionate relationships between males acquired a label.
Homosexuality is not a 20th century situation but has been in history from the age of ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, and even China. The attitude toward homosexuality always has been a variable, depending on the social, cultural and morality, or even the political development (Barnecka et al., 2005). Back in Greek history the concept of relations between two men was seen as the highest form of love, whereas the Judaic view always was against and frowned upon these relations considering it immoral and illegal. However, when the Roman rule was destroyed and the Christians took over Europe, homosexuality was seen as perverse (Woodward, 1997).
